Real Madrid Club de Fútbol, commonly known as Real Madrid, or simply as Real, is a professional football club based in Madrid, Spain. Real Madrid's origins go back to when football was introduced to Madrid by the academics and students of the La Institución Libre de Enseñanza, which included several Cambridge and Oxford University graduates. They founded (Sociedad) Sky Football in 1897, commonly known as La Sociedad (The Society) as it was the only one based in Madrid, playing on Sunday mornings at Moncloa. On 6 March 1902, after a new Board presided by Juan Padrós had been elected, Madrid Football Club was officially founded. The club became one of the founding sides of The Royal Spanish Football Federation on 4 January 1909, when club president Adolfo Meléndez signed the foundation agreement of the Spanish FA.

Under Santiago Bernabéu's guidance, Real Madrid established itself as a major force in both Spanish and European football. The club won the European Cup five times in a row between 1956 and 1960, which included the 7–3 Hampden Park final against Eintracht Frankfurt in 1960. After these five consecutive successes, Real was permanently awarded the original cup and earning the right to wear the UEFA badge of honour. In domestic football, the club has won 63 major trophies; a record 33 La Liga titles, 19 Copa de Rey, 9 Supercopa de España, a Copa Eva Duarte, and a Copa de la Liga. In European and worldwide competitions, the club has won a record 22 major trophies; a record 12 European Cup/Champions League titles, two UEFA Cups and three UEFA Super Cups. In international football, they are the only Spanish club to have won both international titles, a joint record three Intercontinental Cups, and two FIFA Club World Cups. Real Madrid were recognised as the FIFA Club of the 20th Century on 11 December 2000, and received the FIFA Centennial Order of Merit on 20 May 2004.

Given the stature of the club, Real Madrid has a number of rivalries on both the domestic and European front. Primary among them are Barcelona - with games between Real Madrid and Barcelona known as El Clásico (The Classic), and Atlético Madrid - with games between Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid known as El Derbi madrileño (The Madrid Derby). On the European front, Real Madrid have had secondary competitive rivalries with the likes of Bayern Munich, AC Milan, Manchester United, Ajax, Benfica and Internazionale over the years. The team has played its home matches in the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in downtown Madrid since 1947.

It's a bit scandalous that they're playing this game in the afternoon during Summer.

Think we should rest Lukaku and Pogba as they played the full City game. I'll go with this :

De Gea
TFM - Bailly - Jones - Darmian
Carrick
Fellaini - Herrera
Pereira - Martial - Mikhi

Hope we don't get whacked twice by Madrid in pre season!

They should beat us I think
Probably will in the Super Cup. Pre-season game will be their first game though, their fitness levels will be way behind ours. That'll give us a good chance to get something imo. Will be a good game for the players regardless.

Every team gets to play only 3 games - ours are against City, Madrid and Barcelona. The team with the highest amount of points (out of 9) wins the tournament:
We'll be off to play Vålerenga in Oslo even before the ICC is wrapped up (Juventus vs Roma on 30 July).
United will head to Oslo to face Norwegian club Valerenga IF at the Ullevaal Stadium on Sunday 30 July, kick-off 19:00 (local time) / 18:00 BST.

We'll be ahead of them in fitness level in the super cup also, since we started preseason early and will play more games. That's our only hope of winning the supper cup I believe.

Yeah but Real will have played enough games at that stage to be pretty close to full fitness. That will be a lot more difficult. Probably depends on how strong a team they play. It'll be very difficult to beat Real's First XI

Our fitness will be much higher also at this point that's what I'm pointing to. They started late while we started early, so by the time of the match comes it's expected that us will be more fit overall.

Still yes they're a clear favorite to win even if they weren't as fit, they have players who can finish games without running match, from one or 2 killer balls.

So I'm looking at this game more to see how much our team will still be away from European champion after the market, rather than concentrating on the result.

Super Cup is this year's Charity Shield.

Am sure if we win it, Mourinho will include it in his end of season finger count

Very exciting matchup: the kings of Europe versus the kings of preseason. Think we'll win this 2-1.

Would love to see us try 3 at the back against this lot.

Hoping Ramos etc play so Lukaku gets tested against the best.

Ramos is still on holiday, won't play. Same with Ronaldo, Asensio and Llorente. The rest will be there, I believe.

Edit: It seems Ramos has joined recently, as well. He might play.

Why is Ramos still on holiday? Spain didn't play the Confed Cup so why the extra time off for him?

I see our attacking line being overplayed in these friendlies, due to our lack of options. In the last game, Lukaku played 90', Lingard 77', Mkhitaryan and Rashford both 62'. Just a bit more than two days between the next game. Even if we go for 4-3-3, are we starting this game with Mitchell, Martial and (the probably still injured) Mata? Or are we forcing those who only played 62', Rashford and/or Mkhitaryan?

Martial and Pereira will take up 2 of the slots. Mitchell should start aswell.

Expect Fellaini and Carrick in midfield

You're expecting A.Pereira, who Mourinho played twice as #6, to be one of the wide-forwards in 4-3-3? That would be surprising, even if the player looks ready for it. I'm also expecting those in midfield, but hopefully it will be with A.Pereira as #8.

Mitchell starting there, although lovely for the youngster and our assessment of him, is not that good in terms of squad preparation for the official games ahead, is it? He's expected to be an option as leftback in the future and the manager said these youngster were going only to have minutes when others got injured.

I'm hoping that we eventually get to see a midfield 3 of Perreira, Herrera and Pogba. Whether its in the super cup or an early game in the season, I think thats going to be our current best midfield tri in most cases.

Mourinho is probably saving it honestly, and I dont expect Pogba to feature at all, same with Lukaku, unless its the last 20 minutes or so

He came on as a wide forward against City.

Also we don't have much of a choice unless we want to risk injuring players by playing them so soon after the last game.

Mata - injured
Rashford - hobbled down the tunnel when subbed
Lukaku - played 90

Then we're on to Mkhi and Lingard who played quite a lot of the game, possible Mkhi starts along with Martial and Pereira tbh.

Midfield is another struggle. Herrera and Pogba have played loads so you'd expect them to get a rest. That means Fellaini and Carrick must play. Due to Pereira playing further forward I expect to see McTominay play alongside them.

Defence can be any combination really as we've rotated the most there and everyone should be fine to play.

These games were branded as training sessions, so the idea is they haven't been played on the highest intensity level.
Still I really hope we see some rotation and the likes of Martial play from the start through the later minutes of the game.
Pereira is one who has played against Real last season and he has showed good quality when facing them.
I suspect Martial, TFM, Darmian, Pereira, Fellaini to get the nod and play more minutes this game. If Mata is alright, he would probably play 75'.
For the first 60' I would put my money on such team:

................GK...............
TFM....CB....CB....Darmian
......Pereira....Fellaini...........
RW..........Mata.........Martial
.................Lukaku..............

May be Pereira getting only 45 and McTominay playing the rest, Mitchel coming in for 30'. May be Carrick playing more? I'm eager to see who gets more minutes.

It's pre-season, the whole point is to get everyone as much football as possible to drive up fitness levels.

Yeah, kind of, he came as right-winger in 4-2-3-1 when Pogba was moved to #10 and only other option on the bench was Mitchell.

Playing most of the time of 7 friendlies separated just 3 days from each other is “driving up fitness levels”? Lukaku just had 90' and people are starting him against Real Madrid…
