André Onana | Officially a Red! | #24

The Manchester United Goalkeeper Alliance Union Support Group is interesting to watch.

Pats on each other backs, fist bumps, applause for good passes and saves. Henderson and Onana little bromance

Its the first time I have seen video clips of goalies training. I wonder if the footwork exercises (pass & go) are new because of ETH. Surprised to see that they didnt do any long passes practises.

…in the short edited video.

It’s quite often the case that they don’t include long passing drills in the actual session (so many other things to focus on), but a lot of keepers want to do that after the session has finished.

And sometimes there’s tactical drills with outfield players involved where the play starts from a long kick from the keeper.

I’m sure Onana will do some stuff individually with Rashford, working on the timing of those through balls and runs.

I think keeper training at United used to consist of only shot stopping and booting the ball as hard as possible

Thanks.

As goalies get more integrated/critical into the general play with 'modern football' I hope MUTV will start to show more of it -- and not just the outfield players.

They are very careful what to show and what not to. It's such a competitive game that no team/club wants to give anything away, even a tiny detail. So it'll always be pretty generic when it comes to the footage they let out.

True. Its the same as the training with the outfield players.

“I’m very comfortable playing from the back, but it depends…

“I think the most important thing is to recognise the situation and that’s what I do myself, read the situation, especially what the team needs in certain moments.

“When we play, depending on who we play, sometimes you have the possession and sometimes not, so from there you have to be smart and try to help the team, because most of the time playing with these players is amazing.

“I had my first training session with them and it’s just amazing the quality here, it’s great.

“I think a lot of the time we will have possession. Sometimes I have to play higher and sometimes I have to drop.

“It’s just the moments and you have to recognise those moments and from there on, we look forward.

“But I look at myself as a modern goalkeeper, so I can adapt to any situation.”

“It’s not like everyone has the opportunity to play at United.

“For me, if you’re at this big club then you’re already one of the best in the world, so you just have to demonstrate that next month when the competition [Premier League] starts and I think I deserve it, I deserve a lot of things and I’m very happy for what we have done.

“The clean sheets were not only by myself: of course my team-mates, the defenders and the strikers, because the first defender would be my strikers. Also my goalkeeper coach.

“We work every day to keep the clean sheet at the weekend so, for me, it’s great.”

How good is he at saving long range shots?

I'm just watching the Arsenal preseason match at the moment, and can't help but notice the midfield containing Mount and Bruno was a bit sloppy at closing down strikes from outside the box. The same thing happened in the FA Cup final and cost us the game. Although I'm sure we'll improve as the season goes on, I think this will be a gap that opposition managers will try to exploit.

I know Onana is on the slightly shorter side for a 'keeper. But does he have the athleticism to compensate?

You want oppo teams to shoot from distance. That means they’re frustrated and out of ideas. Like most keepers, unless they’re a worldie, he’ll most likely save it.

Only if you have confidence your goalie can save the shots! I wouldn't say think Gundogan pulled any worldies back in May.

Prime DDG would have kept a clean sheet that day. I'm just wondering if Onana has the same thing in his locker.

When asked in an interview if he plays with fear, he talked about this last game that he did and afterwards, he thinks "never again" even if he plays Madrid and Barca together. It was the Europa League final he lost against us. Glad we contributed to his career.

Didnt really have an impression about him in that game tbh.

Looking forward to seeing him but i wish he took the number 1 shirt

Its so refreshing to see there are still a lot of players who want to play for United and want it desperately.

Is he likely to play tonight? Will be good to see him at last.

What a fecking upgrade. From a scarecrow to an actual footballer. Super excited now for new season now.

I think this was the other way round. What a fecking downgrade. From an actual footballer to a scarecrow. Super disappointed now for new season now.

One of the Best signing we have made since sir Alex retired. Even if I haven't seen what he can do in a united shirt so far, I know he is a transformative kind of player and he would significantly improve us playing from the back. Surprised we had such an easy go at him

Not surprised anymore are we? There was a big reason no one was interested in him. :(

Really excited about this one. Might be our most important signing in a long time.

Important as in almost got us relegated.

This is a proper team style upgrade, exciting.

Nope.

I don’t know what it is about this signing but it feels absolutely huge. Maybe it’s the clear direction we’re going in for the first time since SAF, with this being a clear fit for the new manager, imposing his new style throughout the whole team.
I think if you look to City and Liverpool, one of the biggest factors in their success is their GKs. We could’ve stuck with De Gea like we have done for the last 10 years, but this time we’re really making a statement

The statement being: we're stupid and will pay over the odds for players and positions we don't need.

Buzzing for the deal. Think he’s a massive upgrade on de Gea and honestly I think afew de Gea fans will be in for a massive shock about how much of a difference he makes to the side. That being said (yes call me a grump) I hate that he’s number 24. I would much prefer we just give him the number 1.

Massive shock. Yep!

The end of the bore fest United. From keeping the line to playing in midfield GK. Exciting!

I bet we'll all take the bore fest back now.

Excellent news! We got a keeper who’s not only good with his feet but also is a goods shot stopper, commands his area and isn’t afraid to go for crosses. Basically combines DDG only strength with the areas he missed. I even think he is a better shot stopper than current DDG, and am certain with Onana we would have won the FA Cup.

Well he was none of that. Horrible shot stopper, doesn't command is area and is afraid to go for crosses. Not even mentioning his error-proneness.

It will be nice having a goalkeeper who isn't glued to his line and doesn't feck up simple passes. I don't necessarily think he was the best goalkeeper we could have got but a decent signing nonetheless.

It was nice :(

I may be overrating him or the signing but I think the knock on effect to the rest of the team will be massive.

It was massive. Our defenders were nervous throughout the season.

Don't want to judge a book by its cover but he looks a little crazy, like one of those eccentric keepers.
I hope we haven't signed Barthez the 2nd.

WOW. Finally.

Excellent. Most excited Ive been about a keeper signing since Van der Sar.

Most excited I have ever been would be to get rid of him now.

I believe we all will look back quite fondly on this transfer.

I don't believe that anymore.

Still unconvinced by him as a GK, hopefully he can prove me wrong.

Another champ!

Welcome to Utd Onana, but I'm not too impressed by his transfer.
I still believe we should of kept De Gea and use the funds to try and buy a world class ST.
Hope I'm wrong though.

You were told you were wrong. You weren't! :/

Great signing, one of the most talented keepers around. Everyone knows about his footballing attributes, but people are going to be surprised how good a keeper he actually is.

Yep! I think everyone is surprised.

De Gea was shit, Onana was somehow worse. But the real loser here is you..

Again this is a hindsight thing isn't it? He was very good for Inter the season before, nobody could have predicted how crap he'd be.

Would it not make sense selling him, signing Martinez on a free and then going big on another keeper next year when we have a bit more money.

I like martinez but the thing is his contracts runs till 29 for villa.

What a disappointing signing this turned out to be. I expected someone who could help us beat the opponents' press from front with his passing out from the back as a GK. Not only did we not get that, but we also have a ticking time bomb in a position that you can afford mistakes the least.

He's going to be class. I'm calling it now. Big pete part two with all the craziness. So happy we finally don't have a meek goalkeeper but one who can command his area.
Oh how freaking wrong I was. Teaches you not to hype up new signings too much.

I don't like Martinez. I feel like he's one of those who is good because the club he's at only allows limited opportunities to showcase to the world that he actually isn't.

A good goalkeeper shouldn't be able to get themselves a maniac red card that ruins their team's whole season, and it also not seem like a particularly surprising thing for them to do

Last weeks final filled me with dread. The feeling of impending defeat was all the more obvious when you see both Shaw and Onana in our starting eleven.
