Who will be the biggest waste of money?

this is neymar's first season in european football so this is a big test for him. bale has the advantage of more CL exposure and top flight football but el clasico especially can be tough to perform well in. not sure why we're reading so much into their seasons as they've both had periods of good/bad form and are still adjusting. right now neymar is in a poor spell. will be interesting to see how he is used next season depending on who their new manager is

I think it was always going to be a comparison heavily under the microscope this season. But yeah, we probably can't read too much into it so soon.

it's like a scaled down version of ronaldo v messi even though the other 10 players also can play a pretty significant part. personally i find it boring but i know the media and others love this kind of stuff.

They've both got very similar stats, so it's not exactly fair to say one has excelled over the other, when I guarantee 95% of you haven't seen these two play every game this season, myself included. Both are playing with the two highest transfer fees in history, in their first season at the two biggest clubs in the world and at really young ages. The scrutiny they are facing here is pretty dumb if I'm being honest, because they are both destined to become world beaters when they're in their prime.

Do people seem to forget that Neymar just turned 22 and Bale is 24? To both record 30 G+A in their first seasons is pretty incredible, and there is still 2 months left to add.

good post. exactly how i feel

Martino took a risk with Neymar tonight and luckily for him Messi was on hand to use that to his advantage. The one thing that Neymar does provide a lot more (and better) than Pedro/Alexis is his runs off the ball (into space behind the defence). That pass from Messi leading up to the 1st Barça penalty would be a good example of that. The negatives, however, outweighed the positives IMO: he left Di María to run rampant on an overloaded Dani Alves by failing to track back and his decision-making on the ball was atrocious, took 3-4 touches too much every time resulting in easy turnovers.

That was the worse thing about his performance, all the other Barca players were on sync when their passing, Neymar kept the ball too long for no real reason.

Neymar is overrated. The age argument does not necessarily hold as well.

Ronaldo at 21 had the 06/07 season with us, next year won Ballon'dor with 07/08. Messi did even better at similar age.

I would give him a pass for now since this is his first season for Barca

These two examples are extreme cases of precocity, most players develop differently than them. Neymar has the tools to become a great player, it's potential though as right now he's an ok player.

Neymar hasn't had a complete performance for Barcelona since before the winter break. You can attribute that to any combination of youth, new league/coach/country, injury, transfer controversy and competitive level of Barcelona. The good is that most have seen what he can offer already in that first half of the season and so there is plenty to be excited about going forward

I haven't watched Bale much this season outside of the Clasicos, both times he was a nonfactor

He's similar to ronaldo when he was here minus the strength and physicality. Players who's main outlets are their pace and agility generally peak in their mid 20s unless they develop ridiculously good passing ability and/or poaching/finishing ability. The next couple of years will be make or break for him. It will decide whether he's just one of those overrated footballers who come around every 5 years and light up the world in their teens only to not maintain/improve themselves when they're supposed to be at their peak or whether he impresses and becomes one of all time great Brazilians.

Neymar is fecking awful, just awful. 100 million euros?

Lol

Bale's footballing maturity has increased dramatically this season.

He stood up in Ronaldo's absence tonight. Fair play to him. What a debut season he's had: 20 goals and 15 assists.

Impressive.

Bale has arrived. Legendary status already confirmed in the eyes of the Real fans.

Snake Plissken on suicide watch.

Not really, it was a good goal and everyone knows he's dangerous when he's got space to run. Bartra's mistake was trying to play a fair tackle, he had to take him out completely to avoid that.

Still don't think he's good enough when he's up against sides that shut him down and deny him the space though.

Should be kept in mind that Bale is two years older but yeah he is a much more finished player player right now.

Absolute beast of a player. Goals like that show how a player who isn't only fast but can actually add some end product are worth forking out for. Sure not 90 million, but we can't use that as a stick to beat him with anymore because he's produced plenty.

Bale struggles against Alba but today he was playing on the left where Alves was out of position and Bale found himself in a footrace with Bartra, only one outcome there.

Wonder where he is these days? Absolute phallus he was.

;)

I always like it when Barca have a transfer disaster. Far too much shite written about how they groomed their team in their own academy. They've always been big spenders, and sometimes transfers go wrong...

Neymar has a higher ceiling imo, but at the moment bale is the better player and more dependable. That's how I see it

I think both have performed really well. Bale is three years older than Neymar which one can easily forget though. I think that is quite visible, Neymar looked good in the first half of the season but is young and slightly less consistent. Still produces plenty of points though.

Bale has however bounced back from his injury troubles in the start and is performing really great.

Haven't watched the whole game, saw just the second half and I thought Neymar was again one of the worst players on the pitch(like pretty much everytime I have seen Barca this year). Always enjoying watching the overrated diving Brazilian proving his worth.

Good goal by Bale though, but tbf nothing spectacular. He had just Bartra(who isn't the quickest)against himself(who was fouling him though) and that was shit keeping by Pinto. Still important goal and he won them a trophy, so well done.

Bale is having much better season IMO.

Very good performance by Bale. Vast improvement from the last Clasico, at least he posed a constant goal threat and scored the decisive goal.

Was Bartra on a yellow ? If not then really he should have done a better job at fouling.

Bartra got in his way, Bale was miles wide, a yard or two behind and still got past him. A lot of players would have taken the easy option and gone down - massive determination.

Had Bartra chopped him down there is it a possible red card? Shows just how dangerous a player is when you have to foul him to stop him.

I loved watching Bale last year. Looked like had the shoulders to handle the pressure of carrying Spurs whenever they needed him too. I did doubt whether he would have such a big impact in Madrid, largely because he's surrounded by much bigger stars - but he's proved me wrong to be fair.

Looks unplayable at times and I personally think he'll go from strength to strength. The player I'd most like United to get if it were at all possible because I think he can still get even better.

He scored a pretty identical goal against Iceland in a friendly match earlier this season. He was fouled and ran off the pitch then, and finished it even better than that.

Bale is the ultimate pro and he is having an absolutely amazing first season. Fair play to him.

Bale's run was ridiculous. Neymar was a diving cnut, a joke of a player when you think how much he cost them.

Neymar looks very talented - but Bale just looks like a player who wants it more based on what I've seen this year.

Lots of pressure on Neymar to be fair, especially since the scandal over his fee blew up and he seems to be feeling the pressure. He's come from Brazil where he was a mega-star to a club where he's playing second fiddle to Messi. Might take him a while to settle in - and might even benefit from Messi moving on and being the number one with the team set up around him.

That said, as much as I like the skilful players, I love Bale's strength, pace and will to win. Makes him unplayable at times - stay close and he goes past you, back of and he can rifle it in from 25 yards.

What the feck was pinto doing?

He should have saved Di Maria's goal too. He isn't much of a goalkeeper. Massive credit to Bale running that hard after 86 minutes, he was all over the place today
