Bale vs Neymar

Who will be the biggest waste of money?

Neymar was better in the first half of the season, Bale in the second. Normally I don't care for the Copa del Rey but the manner in which it was won just makes it so much more memorable. The goal doesn't remove the idea that Bale isn't great in big matches, IMO. But when I look at Bale, I can't help but see a natural kick-and-rush footballer.

His goal clearly came from the lack of Bartra's (RIP his career) experience, I'm sure Puyol/Masch/Piqué would have done the tactical foul...he reached an insane top speed there. He was close with a couple other efforts too.

I think I'm going to wait until the end of the season to say who's had the better one, but I do think Neymar is the better footballer than Bale.

Seems like the people who watch La Liga day in day out can appreciate the talent of both. Whereas the bandwagon quickly changes from "Bale has been utter shit, told you he wasn't going to make it at RM" to "Neymar is shit, he won't make it at Barcelona".

I am yet to hear a Barcelona fan or RM fan for that matter who has such extreme opinions. Both seem to rate both of them, but like you said Neymar had a better start but hasn't came back after his month long injury. Bale started with an injury and didn't get in to it for quite some time so Neymar was the better player the first half of the season.

True, very few players seem to have this ability. Iniesta and pedro come to mind, but they aren't as explosive in space like bale or Ronaldo. It seems you can only have one ability or the other, not both. Perhaps ribery is the closest you will get as he is good in tight areas and fast n space

Yeah and I don't expect to become at that Iniesta level but sometimes he looks a little lost when that aspect of the game is the best tool to get out of a tricky situation. He has been better for sure (the Schalke goal in the first leg is a proof of that). The thing I like the most about him is that he's humble and hardworking.

Bartra has simply been blown away. He would've had to absolutely wipe Bale out with some force to stop him.

People can carry on the myth of "kick and rush", but if the player has to composure to slot in the perfect pass or perfect shot after he's left someone for dead because he happens to be incredibly fast...so what? It's not like he doesn't have other qualities too.

If they managed to get an upgrade on Benzema, that front three would simply be ridiculous.

Kick and rush needs to be done at the right moment, this is why even if a player has a lot of pace but is ultimately dumb, he can't use that tool efficiently. Bale is fast but he doesn't run sprints all game long, he waits for the right moments.

I think Bale is an exceptional player, who have proved people wrong over and over again as they at various times over his career have ridiculed and mocked him for his injuries, winning record, record against big teams, record against small teams, ability to win his team a game, consistency, being a one trick pony, trying to 'copy' Ronaldo and being worse than both Valencia and Nani apparently.

I think it is fair to say he has already reached a level that most of the fans who continue to rip into him never imagined that he would reach. His desire to improve and ability to add bits to his game and make that happen is incredible.

I can't predict where Bale will go or what he will do because he's already surprised me so many times. I have a lot of respect for how he approaches football. He went to La Liga injured, at the final moment, with no pre season and as the most expensive footballer ever and is the only player to have double figures in both goals and assists in la liga I believe. Has just scored the winning goal in a final as well.

He'll do just fine at Madrid.

During various points in time, the criticism was valid but now it would only take some special bias to hold the same view regarding him.

Nope, Vela, Messi and Rakitic all have double figures as well. His record is very impressive either way. In all competitions this season he's got 20 goals and 16 assists in 39 appearances for Real Madrid.

La Liga only

Bale: 14 goals and 12 assists in 25 games
Vela: 12 goals and 11 assists in 32 games
Rakitic: 12 goals and 10 assists in 30 games
Messi: 25 goals and 10 assists in 26 games

Others that are close to double figures:

Alexis Sánchez: 17 goals and 9 assists in 29 games
Cristiano: 28 goals and 8 assists in 27 games
Neymar: 9 goals and 8 assists in 25 games
Benzema: 17 goals and 8 assists in 32 games
Pedro: 14 goals and 8 assists in 32 games
Aduriz: 15 goals and 8 assists in 28 games
Fàbregas: 8 goals and 12 assists in 31 games

Ah ok cheers. That stat must be a little old then

The most impressive thing for me is Bale has not wilted in Ronaldo's shadow.

Moving for that massive fee and basically having a better version of you at the club already, could have been very intimidating.

He has settled in quickly and fast become a very dangerous weapon there.

People say he isn't worth the money, but that money is what wins you trophies. £80M in the bank is no good if you don't win.

Definitely. However, people were very entrenched in that view of him. I know people on this board were particularly upset on this board when he beat nani to the award but there were so many comments on here about how bale had already reached his top level, as a glorified speed merchant, whereas nani still had levels to go up into.

Bale worked on adding a lot of stuff to this game, which is why I think people trying to write him off now are sillier than ever.

This place was ridiculous after he beat Nani to the award. Bale's been obvious quality for quite some time. He's only getting better.

This "kick and rush" slur to Bale is tired. Henry and Cristiano have at times used the same technique. The point is to get past your marker and score and create goals. If Bale had no end product I'd accept the arguement but he is a great footballer. Not every footballer is meant to have the technique of Maradonna and Zidane.

Bale's goal against Schalke in the CL showed great close control/technique to be fair. He may use pace to his advantage but he has other skills in his locker

The thing about him that impressed me the most is probably his finishing and decision-making. That aspect of him game you can say he modelled it after Ronaldo. When he started out as a young talent, like Cristiano, he's just packs a hard shot. Now give him a chance on the edge of the box and it will probably go in. His finishing is very akin to Ronaldo's. His passing is nothing fanciful but it is economical.

When he was first converted to a winger at Spurs he was mostly just a touchline hugging winger. But, he has become a complete Footballer since then.

Kneejerk I know but based on this season, I can't see how Neymar will fit in this Barca side alongside Messi without sacrificing part of his game or hindering the overall team

If I was a Barca player I'd be fuming at Neymar. Really greedy and self centred in the last 10 minutes.

Bale definitely had a better season. Neymar started off better and had injury worries later, but in the end Bale proved lot more consistent and reliable.

Bale has massively outperformed him. As most sensible people knew he would.

Yes. He made an excellent move around the 80th minute leaving 4 Atletico players for dead, and instead of releasing the pass, he went for even more dribbling. Immensely talented, but need to improve his tactical awareness of the game.

How they kept ''pushing''(read - touching) him while Messi was taking that free kick and how every time he almost fall on his head was ridiculous to watch, little cnut at his best.

What a player he turned out to be... why did we bid when he tore Inter Milan apart!

Bale has had a better season mainly due to the fact it is easier to play in Real Madrid's system. Bale is a good player who is improving while Neymar is better and adjusting to a system which demands more while in a very difficult season too, Bale will always have a target on his back because of his fee, but Neymar will prove the better signing in the long run.

Two players who it will be a joy to watch over the coming years.

I'm a fecking psychic.

A bit harsh on Neymar. He's top scorer in La Liga after the 2 aliens. 2 bad games in a row, yes.
Bale, though, has been bad all season.

There is no comparison. Neymar has been streets ahead and is having a very good season. He is going through a blip at the moment though, with his finishing being awful of late. Bale has just been poor this whole season.

I´d have to agree. This comparison makes no sense atm. I dispise Neymar´s antics but he is the superior player.

Don't really watch La Liga much but did watch the game today. Thought they were both dreadful. That's not to say they are dreadful players, just rubbish performances today. Neymar had a couple of decent dribbles, but made the wrong choice several times, and was very wasteful in front of goal. Bale was anonymous. The other thing that struck me was that second half....just petty foul after petty foul.

Both haven't justified their price tag yet.
Bale will never justify his price tag IMO. He is a very good player but Madrid greatly overspent on him. He was worth 40 million or at most 50 million. If he improves and plays well on a regular basis then nobody will mind though. Nobody thinks he was actually worth what was spent on him, even he would agree with that.
