Ben Chilwell | Chelsea player

All wages in UK are reported pre tax.

Reported to the individuals and to the tax authorities, yes. Reported consistently by the media, no.

I wasn't disagreeing with you, mind - 190k per week for Chilwell seems about in line with what we pay normally pre-tax and in line with what English defenders from Leicester cost whoever buys them.

Apart from staying healthy, reliable, more dynamic, and better cross. I'm pretty jealous, tbh.
more dynamic and reliable  good joke.

Yes Shaw's fitness record isn't great but then Chilwell is hardly injury free either.

So good price has now been quoted as £45 million by BBC. No doubt it'll be down to £30 million by the start of the season.

This past week it's been reported as being £45m with very reasonable add-ons taking it to £50m. Given our recent contract structures, I'd expect it to be a further £5m to Leicester should we qualify for the CL next year.

So do you think Shaw is more dynamic than Chilwell? Maybe if there are chicken wings involved.

Arsene should have come up with proof that what Chelsea did wrong in reporting wages . He was a great manager but when it came to Chelsea he talked lot of utter nonsense.

I wish I could find the article now. But if memory serves a journalist or someone made a comment about our high wage bill and Wenger responded with how we're the only big club who accurately reports our wages and then he made an implication about Chelsea.

Of course, he wasn't saying Chelsea or any other club were doing anything illegal. Only that you shouldn't believe the wages that are reported.

You know what? If we're doing nothing to improve then I hope this lot somehow manage to stop City and Liverpool winning the league again. Tall order but you never know. Liverpool may get complacent and City haven't exactly set the world on fire with their transfers... yet.

I know I shouldn’t be surprised but these transfer fees are ridiculous. You could get a much cheaper and equally better player abroad.
I can see why we've gone down the British and PL ready route this time for LB's. We've done the "cheaper and equal player abroad" route ever since Cole has left in that position and apart from Alonso (who is himself flawed as a LB in a four) they have all spectacularly backfired.

I haven't seen English media reporting any net wages, they usually are clueless on this and always confuse one with other. For example, Serie A wages are always reported in post tax, somehow English journalists take them as gross and report how underpaid they are.

Chilwell will be your second highest paid player now? Assuming no one is paid more than 200K except Kante. It will be like this though, all the wages will be high. Only difference would be how media will report it (usually its also sort of gimmick reporting only base wages for one club and full wages including all possible bonuses for others).

IMO people would stop worrying about individual wages as the way they are reported is so different so we we won't compare like for like. Just go with total wage bill of the club.

Arsenal did overpay players lot in recent years naturally inflated your wage bill. You can't blame other clubs for that.

Yep can see benefits of it. Just sigh at all of the English fees every time.

Yes 100%. Shaw is way faster and more explosive than Chilwell.

The only thing Chiwell has is perhaps better Stamina, but Shaw showed great improvements to that before his last injury.

It's your lots fault. You paid the same (£45m+5m) for AWB last year and set the price for young English full backs.

Oh yes, Manutd's fault when City paid £50m for Walker not many years back.

That was £45+5 as well.

Something fishy about this. Do all English full backs cost the same?

Check your receipt for Luke Shaw. That was a million years ago but if it was £45+5 then I've found a glitch in the simulation.

Seems to be the entry level price for English players.

These players only hold value for a few seasons.

Take Zaha for example, rejected £60m last season? this season no one wants him.

Good signing for them. He's pretty suspect defensively but can whip in a mean cross.

Chilwell need to up his game lot for sure. Will be a huge challenge for him. Need to up his defensive side of the game. Ashley Cole really liked chilwell as a player that must be a main contributor to make him as a first choice Lb to sign by lampard and board. Welcome to Chelsea Ben chilwell.

Totally agreed. Was referring to some of the figures cited by other posters earlier in the thread.

I think Chilwell will be 4th behind Kante, Werner, and Havertz in all probability.

Chelsea know which areas they want to improve in, make a list of targets and then go out and get them. You might question the quality of their signings, but it does show a direct decisiveness that we quite often seem to lack. In the long run it may mean that they end up spending more money, but they seem to be really good at that process of identifying the targets and then going to get them.

I feel a good signing, only 23, been developing his game for a while now. It was time to move on and as a player, a step up, maybe the best choice for him given the top 5-6 teams?

Don't think he's better than Emerson at all. Can attack, can't defend.

I'm sorry but this is just silly. Emerson is totally useless at both ends and is somehow worse than Alonso, despite the latter being an utter trainwreck whenever he's asked to play left back as opposed to left wing back.

Chilwell is certainly not a world beater by any means but arguing that he isn't an upgrade over the current shower of shit playing at left back for Chelsea is just farcical.

Emerson has had only a handful of good games. Bit like Zhirkov in a way. We took a gamble on him, getting him for a reduced fee because of a bad knee injury and he has only ever justified being a backup

Genuinely curious as to which good games you think Emerson has had?

Only one i can think of was the first half against Man.United last season when he hit the bar and for some reason was running ragged down that side

Think he will be a cracking signing for Chelsea, & straight into my Fantasy Football team

Doesn’t really improve them that much in my opinion. They’re doing good business though, fair play to them.
Agree. Alonso is really good for them and imo no worse than Chilwell. Could be a home grown quota thing though which could suggest some of their other youngsters may lose their place in the squad

Can't remember what game it was but Alonso got hauled off at HT because he was so bad. Chilwell just needs to be a 6/10 every week and he's already an upgrade.

Don’t be blinded by the odd xfactor moment Alonso is prone to producing occasionally, he is a defensive liability and, worst of all, painfully slow. Anyone who can run will be an upgrade in the current set up.

A competent left back will also hopefully put more pressure on Azpi, who has been bordering on terrible for the last two seasons. Chillwell, Silva, Someone and James will hopefully be our back four sooner rather than later.

Actually, it's Pep's fault. He spends £50m on fullbacks every season.
