Is €70m that bad these days? I know he’s in the Portuguese league but his stats for goals and assists is very high and he’s prime age which all comes at a premium.

The euro exchange rate is favourable as well. It’s about £60m. I don’t think thats over the top. I mean Pepe cost £70m, Sigurdsson was £50m, we just paid £46m for a full back with no international caps.

Exactly, but you know how our inept board works...

The scouts reports says he is exactly what we need to connect the play to the forwards quickly. This is why both Ole and Phelan went to see him. I hope they can come to an agreement next week.

What scout report is this? Not going to pretend to be a scout or anything or that I’ve watched every minute of him playing but I wouldn’t say that is really a good part of his skill set. He has the skill and range to play passes from deep but if he is playing as a 10 in our league I’m not convinced he can do that as he takes an age to execute things at times.

Its easy to pick defence splitting passes when there is absolutely no pressure on you. I think he’d be better for us playing further back or as an 8 rather than a 10.

Maybe Ole wants him to spray passes quickly on the counter but if that’s the case and he just wants it forward quickly surely Soumare with his power and ability to run the ball would maybe be a better fit.

He plays as an 8 and if we intend going for Maddison in the Summer Fernandes will play as an 8 here. It was reported long ago that Ole and Phelan went to look at him after scouts reports.

This./

The club is incompetent at all management levels; a critique of this nature whilst coming from an idiot is actually ‘the truth’.

The idiots that believed the empty rhetoric OgS spouts really have been shown to be muppets.

It’s January 19th & there’s still ‘no one available at the right price’

Who is available at the right price? January is notorious for being a difficult time to do business. I don’t believe United have been doing the scouting spadework for sure.

At this point I think we need to lose this right price talk. We badly need improvements and should pay whatever needed in my opinion. We're never going to be a top four team again unless we start to splash cash around when we identify the right players for the team. (If we actually have the ability to identify the right players is a totally different discussion though). I've heard that's the way Klopp works for instance, he paid pretty hefty sums for van Dijk and Alison.

I suspect after this afternoons showing Ed might be getting a rocket to get it done

If we don’t sign Fernandes, who do people think his next club will be? No better than Valencia I suspect.

I see Ed is leaking that we are looking for a DoF again, never a good sign. Dont know if its the game or the break in negotiations.

You look at Fernandes's stats, his abilities,work-rate and age and it all aligns perfectly to the type of individual you want associated with your club and yet there's still a lingering doubt in my mind over him.
I cant quite put my finger on it.

This sudden moral outrage from SW over United pushing their spin on a certain event through media is a bit silly, considering this literally happens all the fecking time. Every jurnou covering Liverpool being adamant that they managed to beat United to Minamino's signing despite United being linked with him a grand total of zero times is the most obvious recent example I can think off. It also happens pretty much every week with Barca, Bayern, Real etc and so forth.

Yeah getting bent out of shape about people no longer believing the Portugese media is a weird one too when they've been peddling shite for years. Nothing wrong with it, it's what papers do, but it's a bit strange that they are getting annoyed at people sneering at Portugese media now.

so the 80m is a low base offer with 'ambitious' add ons. Last week Ed hired an ex Sun journalist to be our head of PR didn't he

Bad teeth. Need it fixed to up his IG likes once he signs.

First of all its 68m. 80m are in euros not pounds. We spent 50m for a full back from Palace who can't attack and 80m for a CB from Leicester who is a slight upgrade on Smalling. Putting that into contest (+ some other fees like Haller for 45m, 72m for Pepe and 62m for Mahrez) then the transfer isn't that outrageous especially considering that we're buying in January which is a seller's market. The 40m + bonuses we're offering is laughable especially the rumours surrounding the clauses. There's more of a chance of me jumping in the white house, take down all the body guards there, kick Trump in the balls then do the same at Putin and the same at Kim Jong Un then this happening.

Secondly we shouldn't be here. Herrera shouldn't have been allowed to leave and the CM's issue should have been sorted during the summer. Yet there are still people defending the club, that despite our net spend is ridiculous, our stadium is leaking water, our team is losing players, our CEO keeps lamenting about how tough it is for him to buy more then 3 players per window and that the squad is getting thinner with every transfer window. We had 3 managers, a former player and an agent saying the same thing. United only care about money. Yet you still find people buying into Woodward's lies

Well said.

You’re missing the point.

I’m not a scout & my interest in world football outside of United has dwindled to non-existent; long gone are the days of finding Kim Kallstrom games to watch due to CM.

I agree January is notoriously difficult to purchase which is why after the bad start to the season when OgS was saying he may try again in January I balked at the nonsensical nature of his comments as once the summer window went as disastrously as it did we were doomed to a year without proper midfield reinforcements.

What I will say though is that if a club of our size & scouting network are unable to find reasonable upgrades on Lingard & Periera [January or not] we may as well shut up shop.

We aren’t simply in need of Mbappe level signings that take us over the top; an upgrade on players the likes of those shouldn’t be beyond a club of our size/resources imo.

As I said I don’t keep abreast of world football as I used to but I refuse to believe an upgrade on the players I mentioned & others is beyond us.

We all know January is a terrible time to sign players, which makes the inept handling of our Summer window even more startling.

nailed it

Did anyone watch Sunday supplement? I had it on in the background and there was a section where they asked the reporters how they feel during this time. Neil Custis went on to give an interesting take on sources.

Says he was told Bruno was seen in a hotel room in Manchester, but if he prints that there is every chance he’ll be pictured in a shopping market tomorrow in Portugal.

I’m pretty sure there was a point where he said something like not convinced we are even in for him. It’s just Sporting trying desperately to sell a player as they need cash and they are trying to put pressure on United by making our fans turn on us. Making it seem like we are to blame for a deal falling through that was maybe not even underway.

Heads up. The main presenter Neil Ashton is leaving Sunday Supplement to become a “PR Advisor” for Man Utd. He also writes for the Daily Mail... will be interesting to see any future propaganda from him written as article pieces

Pretty much nail on the head and it is a big fat shame in all honesty.

I think buying a player who can make an impact now and become a good squad player in time, with potential, a la James, would be perfect right now. Paying a fortune for Fernandes when we’re not even in competition for him seems crazy. I don’t know where these things land in terms of your view. Certainly most people, when Vidic and Evra first arrived, thought, “who?” So it’s not about going after big names, that’s never really been where Man United’s biggest transfer successes have been.

You feeling ok Devilish? This is quite a good post.

I agree with pretty much everything barring your underrating of AWB and Maguire.

United would have way more to lose if they back out of this. No playmaker, no creativity and we'll look like utter fools when he's back to tearing it up, while our players are running around like idiots.

No chance we don't get this done.

Yeah agree. I think the eventual blowback in not getting this done now, both in terms of fan outrage but also squadwise and therefore performancewise, would be too big for the club to cope with.

I’m guessing thats why Sporting is playing hardball with us, even though they sorely needs the money.

He plays as an 8 and if we intend going for Maddison in the Summer Fernandes will play as an 8 here. It was reported long ago that Ole and Phelan went to look at him after scouts reports.
That was never confirmed though that they were at the game If I recall.

hmm.. what do you think the Sporting fans' reactions will be if Bruno refuses to play or hands in a transfer request? As I understand, most of you think he deserve to leave to a bigger club?
I don't think he would do that for 2 reasons 1. He is very professional 2. After what happened in the academy in 2018 (hooligans attack) many thought he used the situation as a way to take advantage of the club and get more money because he jumped ship first chance he got. When he came back fans were not happy and he himself said on multiple social media posts that he would fight to get the love and trust from the supporters back. He was booed for months until he won them back over and he fulfilled his praise of winning a majority of the fans back by posting a record season for him and leading the club to 2 out of 3 of the domestic trophies.
