He isn't a better fit. We need both roles, we just seemingly prioritized the rarer player which makes sense but it was never the only midfield position to strengthen.
He is a better fit, based on the fact that all of our other midfielders at the club prefer to be granted the freedom to advance or engage the opposition. They are all attacking midfielders, box-to-box midfielders, or ball-winning midfielders who want to engage the opposition. We currently have zero, bonafide defensive midfielders at the club who want to sit and hold.

Even De Jong is more of a central midfielder who wants to get forward than hold. He can play defensive midfield, but that isn't his most common position. We probably won't be signing De Jong, but he would be an even better player for Casemiro's presence to allow him to play more of his natural game.

Latest transfer meeting must have been who is the best dm in the world?

Casemiro

Feck it let's just go for him.

Fair play

If we assume he's only got 3 top seasons as a starter left... 2025 is when Declan Rice's contract with West Ham expires. Just saying. Maybe that would be the plan.

Or the plan is to have a top player in a position for three season, which is a fairly normal plan everywhere. It's not as if clubs can expect longer success, managers don't last that long on average.

You can always and should always build long term. Cavani, Ronaldo.. short term stop gaps that would help us, did they?

Look at the well run clubs, Real, Liverpool, City.. they almost never sign players over 30, and definitely not for big money. Why? Because then you need to replace them in 2 years. Bayern signed Mane who's the same age.. but he cost £30m, not £60m, which is fairer value that takes into account age.
I agree with you 100%. Ideally about 30m should be the right price for a player entering 30s, even for very good players. But to get that price you need to work well in advance, have a plan in place. This panic buying never helps.

Remember what Ralf Rangnick said about signing players after their last big contract?

Here we are, making the same mistakes yet again

Such a mistake signing a world class player. I am devastated.

For half the price perhaps. would be madness to take a punt on him at the same price.
Agreed. I dont think we should be paying £60m+ for either. FDJ would have been the key signing for me,, for that type of money, but that ship has sailed with the look of it.

They are all midfielders that can't pass the ball reliably, struggle to progress play and shit their pants under pressure. We need both roles as much as the other, one because our midfielders are defensively weak and the other because they are technically and mentally weak.

This is simply untrue.
Come on guys, at least make it vaguely realistic.
Thanks, I needed a good laugh!
I can see it happening if we pay stupid money. He’s old, won everything there is to win there, they just bought someone younger who plays his position. Its not as unrealistic as people think.
You guys all owe me a like so I can get rid of my 10 post limit now haha

If I hear the final pay day expression again I'll go nuts.
Why. Do you not think players might be more likely to go to under performing club in their 30s for double the cash Vs when they are younger and hungrier for trophies. This is a phenomenon. There are parallels to the real world job market too.

Edit: as someone pointed out above, rangnick spoke often about which contract you sign a player for, their first, second etc.. and final

Don’t want to get too excited, I’ve been disappointed too many times, last time being FDJ.. if true though, this would be a great signing!

F Ralf Rangnick, when you can sign Casemiro you do it. Best DM in the world without a doubt.

Interesting choice of replacement if they can get Newcastle to sell, looks like he’s going to be a top player though

It’s a no-go now, obviously, but would Rabiot have worked beside Casemiro?

Hopefully he's actually that for us and not another Varane
Unless Casemiro has lost all his ability in the last few months I would say he is. He was an absolute beast for Madrid last season and I don't think they win the CL without him. The first leg against City when he was out showed how important he was for that team.

Just think about it. How could our squad not react positively to a guy who does this:

It's completely the wrong move for me, but you're entitled to disagree.

I think Caicedo is the better bet.
He’s got 10 premier league starts to his name. You think making a decision on that evidence is sound and that the people wanting proven world class players are mad?
