If he doesn't want to terminate his contract, the club should just trigger the contract extension and have him train with the reserves until the end of his contract. The player has more to lose than the club in this situation.

I predict that after the WC he’ll announce he’s taking time off to be with family and then join an MLS team for next season. Miami would be right up his street and the US looks his best option because after this outburst no European manager would want to work with him. He’s not worth the risk.
