Folks like you are the reason the tabloids still exist
The funny thing is the only place I ever see tabloid rumours is on this site.

Every single day you quote a tabloid rumour and feel a sense of doom & dread about it.
That sense is just about United in general these days. We've become adept at doing the wrong thing since Fergie retired.

Unscrupulous businessmen saying the right things in podcasts/PR interviews et al is but the produce of consensus, analysis and demographics. It's plastic.

We've talked a good game long enough. Let's see some tangible results.

The only way one can be sure is by results. Of course you may put into context mitigating factors (injuries et al), but nobody should be 'trusted' willy nilly.

The trust has to be earned.

Ratcliffe and the Ineos board 'trust' Ashworth, and good luck to them, but we have no reason to. We have no reason, as yet, to trust Ineos, either.

If there's any truth in their desire for Southgate, well, expect another decade of pain.
Take your head out of the paper rumours

we are were we are, so far they are saying and doing the right things. Ashworth is one of the best out there.

and coming back to my original point, you don’t go into cycles of replacing the DoF. Remember that they design the blue print so what do you think would happen if you’re sacking one every season? Secondly the “top” of this particular role is a very small market, you’d soon run out of experienced people with good track records

That’s your strange sense of negativity again on show.

What unscrupulous businessman have been saying the “right things” about Manchester United during Woodward’s time in charge? fecking no one. He’s got shit the entire time about comments calling us Disneyland et cetera or saying we can do things in the market no one can.

This feels like the exact opposite of the bullshit we have seen over the last decade. Businessman coming in and trying instantly to put qualified professionals into positions in which they’ve already shown their worth at other clubs.

It was a reference to Ratcliffe, not Woodward.

Woodward (and Arnold's) reign was littered with 'turn the corner' talk. Think about how we'd 'learned' when dealing with Dybala's demands, or how Jose was 'the man'. Arnold's meeting the 'Full Sale Only' clowns. #Pogback?

Just a few examples.

It does, and it's very encouraging.

But it's further reason why their positions at United should be regulated by results, and not reputation.

I think the biggest issue in this discussion right now is you oversimplifying the world and presenting some sort of false dichotomy: Either it is results based meaning every position in the club is just evaluated on the goal count on any given Sunday, or it’s trust based meaning nepotism, cronies around the campfire sucking the coffers dry doing nothing …

The social world doesn’t work quite like that. Your very extreme and oversimplified results based approach (even the DoF work should be evaluated primarily on football results within two seasons, despite their work being just one of a hundred factors overdetermining those results) is not the golden standard within top athleticism, it is not the norm looking at structures behind football clubs actually getting results.

Sure, you find plenty of examples of that too, but presenting it as some sort of ‘the only way to go’ and ‘the alternative is being Ed Woodward mk II’ is false and just stupidifies the discussion.

The truth is, Berrada and the board will have their ideas about what kind of performance and ‘results’ they will evaluated the DoF from, and we as fans will have no clue about what those are. Match scores and even trophy counts will be far down on that list.

He's good mates with Southgate. Neville talked about it on the Overlap a few months back, that they worked together at England.

The whole point of hiring a sporting director is to impose a consistent playstyle and vision that dictates the recruitment of coaches and players going forward.

If Southgate is a model for Ashworth's football philosophy then he can fecking sling it. Not wanted here.

Ashworth seems, from a distance, to be a Murtough like Director of Football in that his skill-set is managing all the different departments that report to him, rather than being the appropriate person to determine how the team should play, therefore understand the type of manager to appoint, players to buy, transfer fees and salaries to pay.

Ashworth has plenty of experience as a Director of Football but is it relevant to what we need our DoF to actually do ?

At Brighton the philosophy came from the owner. The whole model came from the owner. The owner selected Potter as a suitable coach for the model they were employing. At Newcastle Howe was appointed prior to Ashworth joining.

So who at United is going to make the decisions that Tony Bloom made for Brighton ?

Bloom took over in 2009 and made good progress with Brighton. But you could argue something happend with the club in 2019 when Ashworth came in.

If he so much as nodded in agreement when the nonsensical potential Southgate appointment was mooted I want him out. Besides setting up the structure and coordinating all departments I expect the Sprting Director to be the adult in the room, to be the guy that prevents us from making catastrophic decisions like this one. Of it's all just paper talk with no substance then all is forgiven.

Why does everything involving United take forever.

I dont want Ashworth at the club. If hiring Southgate is his first move he can fe.k of. He'll be worse than useless Ed.

couldn’t agree more mate

only reason Ratcliffe wants him is so that they can combine Dan Ashworth’s first name with his surname for promotional purposes, so that it sounds like the Harry Potter actor

It has come to the point where you have to be forgiven for rumours? Jesus wept (allegedly).

Muppets. Ashworth is one of the best DoF around. And you don’t want him because of paper talk?
Dont want him if the paper talk is true*

Because no half decent director of football would make Southgate their first appointment at any club, let alone at United.

A very bright man by all accounts, and by the time he joins us, he'll be an expect gardener, too. I look forward to significant improvements in player acquisitions and Old Trafford's pitch maintenance.

Honestly not sure what I want. Did not want Solskjaer as coach. I thought he'd flop. Where I'm at with Southgate.

He'd impart some 'good vibes' but cannot see past another Solskjaer. Third, second, third, league cup, fourth....

Would not be happy either but I think it’s a rumour borne out of the fact Southgate will likely finish his stint with England after 8 years and Ashworth knows him well

Im not into Southgate at all, ETH may as well stay on as I hope he does. Saying that what this club badly needs after a very honest audit and cuts is stability and I think a best in class U.K./Ire core should give us that again. SJR and Brailsford are team GB all the way so that’s obviously where the links to Southgate and Potter are coming from, basically lazy journalism and guesswork at this point.

I don't want Southgate anywhere near the club, I'd rather we give ten Hag another season and see how he develops players like Mainoo and Garnacho.

I wonder if we're going to hire a new coach with Ramsey leaving?

Yeah that's how I took the initial rumour but now it's beginning to sound like there is something more in it and that's what I fear the most. A media darling like Southgate would be protected by his mates in punditry from day one and if he achieves anything decent he could be in place for far longer and damege us to a point where recovery will be very expensive. I just pray that it's just media B. S during a slow news week in football.

This is extremely low even for some of the low standards that can appear on here.

Last week it was talk of ETH being favoured to stay, this week it’s Southgate. I’m sure someone else will be added to the mix next week. With all the changes on and off the pitch, it’s the media’s dream to report on United atm and even worse people will lap everything up even though we have no clue what is going on with anything.

I get where the naysayers are coming from, it's been months since we came to an agreement with him and we haven't lifted a single piece of silverware in that time. What exactly are we paying him for?
