After the first 20 minutes we bossed that game, reduced the place to silence by end, Fletcher would have made no difference at all.

It is getting beyond daft this virus thing. What the feck is it, AIDS?

On a more serious note, we could do with him back as tonight we had to shoehorn Ryan Giggs, who was playing poorly, into the centre midfield role as Anderson was struggling.
Should sell it to Real Madrid. :smirk:

You didn't boss the game at any point, Newcastle were on the front foot first half and you had more of the play in the second. They should have got a pen which would probably have settled it. Lucky point.

We definitely need him back but let's not forget he hasn't been in great form all season. After that virus it might take him a bit of time to get back up to speed.

A fresh and in-form Fletcher could give our midfield the bite we need in those big games.

United were overwhelmingly dominant in the second half, and should also have had a penalty (possibly two when you consider the handball from Rooney's shot). It was anything but a lucky point.

It was a typical away performance other then not winning, see through the first 20 minutes and then take control as the adrenalin wears off the players and crowd, we made enough chances to win

There is a wiki for "Absofeckinglutely Ridiculous Statement" and low and behold, this was the number one example there.

I don't think two games - if he can play 90 in both - will be enough to get him ready for the CL Final (to start, at least). Shame for him if he misses another one.

SAF had said there was also the testimonial. Are there any reserve games he can take part in?

He's not completely fit. Still got a bit pain when he trains.

I don't think testimonials or reserve games would get him properly match fit, unfortunately.

If he plays both remaining games then we'll have a better idea.

Like I've said before, fergie will want to make sure he's fit. If he's fit, he'll play.

Fratton Park, play up Pompey!
I don't think he will play in the final even if he is fully match fit. I think the team we played against Chelsea is the team we'll play, Fletcher is then trying to get a spot on the bench and i don't know if he'd even make it on there.

Harsh, but we don't need him at Wembley when our first XI is playing like today and when he's not fully fit.

Pain?

He wasn't injured.
That's what I was thinking. Didn't he just have the flu? :houllier:

In any event, we might need him but if the team plays like they did today against Barcelona, there is no reason we shouldn't come out on top. I'm just a bit testy about the wingback positions. The other 9 seem fine to me.

Well he played his first reserve game on the 28th so you assume he had been training since at least a few days before that. I think he can get his previous fitness levels back but I'm skeptical about whether or not he'll be back to his best by time the final comes around.

It's not like he's certain to even get a place on the bench either, you would assume we'd have a keeper, O'Shea, Smalling/Evans, Scholes, Berbatov, Nani. Then the last two places between everyone else, including Rafael, Anderson, Owen all of whom are capable of making a difference off the bench.

Probably good he gets the extra rest. I saw Fletch on the US tour last year and he looked a bit run down there as well.

Darren Fletcher will miss Manchester United's pre-season tour of the United States to continue his recovery from a virus.

The Scotland skipper was sidelined for nearly all of the Red Devils' Premier League title run-in last season after being struck down by a virus which led to the midfielder losing a massive amount of weight.

It had been hoped Fletcher would be able to feature in United's UEFA Champions League final against Barcelona, but the 26-year-old was not even fit enough for the bench.

Sir Alex Ferguson was then optimistic the midfield maestro would play a big part in their trip across the Atlantic which begins on Monday, however he has been left at home to recover.

Fletcher's next targets will be to get fit for Paul Scholes' testimonial match against New York Cosmos on 5th August and the Community Shield showdown two days later against Manchester City before the Premier League season opener at West Brom.
Catch up

"Darren will remain at Carrington to undergo an individualised conditioning programme given he missed a large proportion of last season," a club spokesman said.

"This will help him catch up fitness-wise to the levels of the rest of the team.

"We tried to accelerate things but we want to give him the best opportunity to be fully fit for the new season. We feel a reduction in the amount of time Darren spends travelling will help him achieve this."

With the absence of Fletcher, Ferguson will take an initial squad of 21 with him including new signing Ashley Young, who has claimed the number 18 shirt previously worn by Paul Scholes.

David de Gea and Phil Jones, numbers one and four respectively, loan returns Tom Cleverley and Danny Welbeck, Mexican marksman Javier Hernandez and centre-back Chris Smalling, who has just penned a new five-year deal at the club, will all join the tour later having been given an extended break.
Miss out

Darron Gibson and Tomasz Kuszczak will miss out on the trip as both players appear unlikely to be at Old Trafford come August.

Other loan stars Federico Macheda and Mame Biram Diouf will be part of the tour team along with Nani and Dimitar Berbatov despite speculation of a summer move away from the red side of Manchester.

United's tour opener begins with a tricky test against New England Revolution in Boston on Wednesday before heading to Seattle, Chicago, New Jersey and Washington.

Whatever the hell he has, they should give him as much time as possible to recuperate. It obviously affected him last season, and there is no point in him playing if it's going to continue to do so. He needs as much time off as possible. He probably needs to put that muscle back on that he clearly lost last season.
