Demonoid.com back online‏

Ive been looking for a code for a while now.

Sorry Jake, won't let me create any more for the time being.

What's happened to demonoid then?

DDoS attack, the site has been down over a week but they are slowly working on getting it up again but could be weeks even months.

Is it completely shut down? Where will I get my files to report to the authorities? :(

kat.ph is a decent alternative, doesn't require sign up though so no idea how "safe" it is, I've been using it ocasionally to do just that, but it doesn't seem to work since the files stay there! :(

Even if they tied an IP to an account and then in turn to a name how do they actually prove what you have downloaded? Demonoid as far as I know hosted a lot of freely available content amongst the masses of illegal stuff.

I've not used torrents for years so I'm a bit out of the loop but I'm assuming the whole operation of these things is to target the servers/owners primarily and take the service down, can you imagine the data they would have to sift through to even get significant uploaders to court let alone downloaders and thats before you even talk about jumping through the legal hoops.

It's the same with the cyberlockers, they are targeting the ones that profit from hosting illegal content (which is all of them really) and when they take one down (Megaupload, Oron) they either pop back up at some point or something new pops up.

Its just a battle for inches, I really doubt it will ever stop. The ones that take the risk for financial gain are the ones on the hook, the individual cases as far as I'm aware are now pretty much non-existant except the odd fishing escapade.

think you have the gist of it Leg-End.

I think the main objective was to stop the site from offering the ability to download legal stuff..especially movies.

Not really, Demonoid have a number of things on you and me.

1) If you made one, a username. Maybe not the biggest deal in the world but its a start.
2) If you made one, an email address. For the major offenders they could easily ask google or aol or yahoo or whoever for the IP address tied to that email and find out where you live.
3) Your IP address, unless you used a proxy. This shows your internet provider, and by contacting them they should be able to pinpoint your exact location.
4) Your mac address unless you constantly spoof it. This remains constant and is a physical property of your computer, right?
5) The data of what you downloaded, what you uploaded and how much. This was a big part of the demonoid community (your ratio is rubbish, how dare you ask for people to seed), and you can be sure that it will be ordered to a certain extent.

So basically they could be sending police to my door, or your door, right at this very moment. Hopefully they will just be doing that for the major offenders though.

I'd be interested to know where they would put you all then. Demonoid had a pretty big community and I would imagine a large part of it at some point has downloaded something illegally.

It's posturing from what I can see, they took down a service that was a gateway to illegal content, just like they have done numerous times before and will continue to do in the future.

This thread is scary.

They want you to be scared, if they scare off users then its further success on top of taking the owners/servers down. I can't imagine anyone that massively contributed to that site is chuffed about it but I can imagine a fair old whack of it doesn't really care and is already contributing somewhere else.

Aye they have a number of my ip's over the years, at least one of my email addresses, my mac addresses, all of that and more.

Still I'm not expecting anything to happen, but times are changing. Pirate bay, Demonoid, Mega Video, TV-Links, TV-Shack, Rapid Share (alive but mostly copyright free)...

MIAA and RIAA already have their biggest victory to date. Demonoid was the biggest 'offender' to date.

To pursue individual uploaders...much less downloaders will be a moumental task. Even if that was their goal, they would have had to monitor each upload/download to prove. It is not enough to get your email/ip address.

There were a lot of stuff there that was not illegal at all.

From what I have read, they were going after the movie downloaders..the new ones. Have not heard about music much. But even in the case of teh movie, they had so much problem proving who did what.

I'd daresay Demonoid is a drop in the ocean, as far as torrent downloads went. It's a private tracker forum, with limited access to newbies (through invitations).

The RIAA and MIAA largely stopped going after individuals sometime ago after it became clear it was expensive, time consuming and extremely bad PR. They pretty much only pursue the sites and the major uploaders. There are hundreds of thousands of Demonoid subscribers across the globe they will not pursue any significant number of them.

Are people actually expecting any action?

I downloaded a fair bit off it, and would be staggered if my ISP even contacted me about it.

I'm thinking that I really should secure my wi-fi connection because I have a nasty suspicion that my next door neighbour has been using my connection to download illegal stuff.

He is isn't he? Getting me to pay and take the blame. If I get questioned I'll dob him in immediately.

It's not online and it doesn't look good.

After several turbulent weeks with DDoS attacks, the shutdown of its servers and a criminal investigation into the site’s owners, trouble continues for the Demonoid BitTorrent tracker. After the site’s domain names were put up for sale last week, domain market place Sedo has now delisted them citing “legal issues.” As time progresses the hope of a comeback for what was once one of the largest BitTorrent communities continues to fade.

The page numbers on this thread annoy the feck out of me.

Dear Demonoid Community Member,

We have all read the same news stories: The Demonoid servers shut down and seized in the Ukraine. The Demonoid admin team detained in Mexico. The demonoid.me domain snatched and put up for sale. The Demonoid trackers back online in Hong Kong, but then disappearing.

We all wanted to believe that Demonoid would be resurrected once again; but it seems that these events have spelled the end of Demonoid as we have always known it. We all waited to see if Demonoid would return, though its now clear that this time its really gone.

Now for some good news: The heart and soul of Demonoid lives on!
Through an amazing sequence of unlikely events, the data on those Ukrainian servers has made its way into the safe hands of members of our community and has now been re-launched as d2.vu

Invitations to return are being sent out only to existing Demonoid members, which is the reason you have received this email. For the foreseeable future d2.vu will remain a semi-private site and no new invitations to join will be issued until we are certain that the system is stable. To login, click here and authenticate using your old Demonoid username and password.

Demonoid may be gone, but the community lives on at d2! Welcome home!

Sincerely,
admin

So it's returned, seemingly - can't access the new site yet, though.
