For me the best are Terminator 2, Total Recall and Die Hard.
Honorable mentions for 48 Hours, Robocop, Aliens, Running Man.

Hate all the Lethal Weapon and MI movies.

Currently watching The Rock on TV. Girlfriend had never seen it before and she's loving it. Basically a flawless movie filled with great action movie actors, sympathetic villain and peak Cage. It's sort of "military Die Hard".

It's also possibly Connery's best role as Bond.

Great movie. A rare high point for Michael Bay.

In many ways like Sandler he started out just making movies then found out a formula or niche and just hammered that nail. Bad Boys is fine which is the movie he did before The Rock and Pain and Gain was certainly different from his perspective but the rest of his movies, also the ones he's produced, have been money grabbers and he's tremendous at that with tonnes of high grossing films and incredibly zero flops. Hate him or like him, he knows Hollywood.

Where do people rank Aliens on the list of greatest action films of all time?
Action films? It's one of the greatest films, never mind action films.

Personally I think John Wick and The Raid are the only action films of the last couple of decades that can compare to the glory days of the 80's and early 90's. All these Fast and Furious and films starring The Rock just don't cut it.

Reminds me actually I got Police Story on blu-ray. I'm now torn between watching that and watching Commando tonight.

Bourne Ultimatum, Casino Royale or Mad Max: Fury Road, perhaps?

Sometimes it rubs me the wrong way...

Definitely yes on Fury Road. Completely forgot about that. Good call.

Casino Royale I can barely remember I haven't seen it in so long, but don't remember it being anything special. He's no Tim Dalton!

The Bourne films almost ruined Hollywood action films for a while when everyone started doing the shakey cam nonsense.

I really enjoyed Casino Royale. The first two action scenes are great - chasing the guy using parkour, then the bomber at the airport - but it changes pace for the poker tournament. I liked the second half too, but it was less of an action film. Still, for me a refreshing change for the Bond movies.

I think The Bourne Ultimatum is the best action film of the past two decades. The shaky cam worked, you didn’t lose your bearings - a bit unfair to blame that for the string of lesser, incomprehensible copy cats.

While I’m disagreeing with you I might as well mention that I really like Fast 5, the first one to go pure action and it was great, mindless nonsense.

I’m very fond of Taken as well, but beyond that I would need to start looking at films I wouldn’t class as purely action, such as comic book movies (Dark Knight, etc.) or historical epics (Gladiator).

I heard great things about The Equalizer, however I didn't get round to watch it yet - how does that hold up as an action movie?

I'll need to rewatch Casino Royale. You've made it sound better than I remember. I don't think I've seen it since a year or two after it came out. Is that the one with Eva Greene?

I could barely watch the Bourne films, the shakey cam was really distracting and doing my head in. I'd be torn between John Wick and The Raid as the best action film of the last 20 years. Although it's probably cheating when you start going into Asian cinema.

I enjoyed Taken, but I dunno if I'd call it an action classic, it's more of a documentary about what Liam Neeson does on Thursday afternoons.

Yes the one with Eva Greene. I would imagine you’ll enjoy the first half, not sure how you’ll feel about how it develops.

You’re overrating John Wick for me, I would place it round about level with Taken, good films but I would stop short of calling them great.

The Raid, however, was brilliant. And although it’s not as good, the sequel’s final fight is awesome and I struggle to think of a better fight scene.

I would have to agree with your original point that it’s slim pickings for top, top quality action in the last twenty years compared with what preceded it.

Yeah that's up there with the best for me. Don't bother with the second one though. Not a patch on the first one.
