Defensively I really worry, so much space in behind him and I’m not sure the current version of Varane is good enough to cover, nor old Case. Offensively he’s coming on leaps and bounds though, today it was worth the trade off but we are desperate for a DM and RCB.

Thought Dalot did alright today although that stupid step over thing he did that caused him to lose possision in Villa's box annoyed me as he had no reason to be doing that and gave away the ball needlessly.

We have this a lot. A player will do something really good and then a few minutes later have a lapse that costs us. He was good today but he could also have cost us the game. Such a nice cross. He’s a confident lad. Not a bad defender but much better going forward for my money

Literally as soon as I said out loud "Dalot has been really solid today" he whiffed that clearance to Luiz... That's Dalot in a nutshell though I suppose.

Like the tweet says, interesting:

Some of the issues with the spacing are caused by his own and our team's pressing/naivety. At the same time, he also doesn't give up and makes some incredible recovery runs. He probably did enough to even slightly put off Watkins on that Onana save too. I haven't watched MOTD in a while, so a bit surprised they would cover something like as they always seemingly cover 'bigger' narratives and often have simplistic takes.

Conversely, I came across the Pellistri thread and was interested to look at his highlights in the Barca game but then noticed Cancelo:

I didn't watch the full game or know how he's performing in general so obviously an out of context judgement but based purely on these clips, Cancelo was quite instrumental in a couple of their goals. However, some of his effort and positioning on defending was horrendous; he's wearing no.2. I'm not trying to use this to say 'there isn't better than Dalot out there' but when people say 'he's doing okay, we should find an upgrade in the summer' I don't think people realise short of buying the once in a generation talent that doesn't exist or are unobtainable, these 'much better, attacking and good defensive RBs' don't grow on trees. And in turn, I think underrating the job Dalot is doing.

Seems like his pace/acceleration has been underrated. Although his positioning and covering of passing lines have been suspicious at times, he is constantly maling vital recoveries in recent games.

I seem to recall he recorded the 2nd fastest top speed for all our players last season, just behind Rashy.

Agreed, I feel like his pace and stamina have improved a lot. I know there's been some (admittedly fluff pieces) by Luckhurst about how hard he's been training, but it's certainly paying off.

Also agree with this. There are far more important areas of the field where we lack appropriate player profiles to be concerned about replacing our RB.

Dalot had that bad moment where he gifted Villa a decent chance, but otherwise he was very good.

His crossing seems to have improved this season. He used to get into position quite a lot but time after time he'd massively overhit the cross. He still does it a bit more than I'd like, but this season he has been getting it right a fair bit more than he used to. Hopefully he continues improving it because it can be a big weapon going forward.

His first clearance 10 seconds earlier wasn't much better either! He's clearly playing better but has to perform like this consistently for the rest of the season but there's definitely a mistake in him. It was a brilliant cross but how many times has he done that? It was only a few minutes earlier when he should have passed inside him that he decided to take on the left back, decision making has too improve.

I've been very critical of him and would love to be proved wrong.

You wonder what on earth they have been watching.

Cut the bullshit mate, the majority of the time his crossing is woeful.
His crossing before this season was woeful. He has improved a fair bit this season though. Still not great, but it's not something that stands out as a massive weakness anymore. And when he gets it right his crosses tend to be very dangerous.

Overlaps well, good in possession, had a good cross for Hojlund, awesome assist for the goal. RB is not a worry position anymore for us, I'm far more worried about LB and a back up LCB, and midfield positions.

There is an issue with that tactic. Him playing as a midfielder leaves acres of space out wide, and we have repeatedly struggled with that. You either have a CDM that can cover that ground or centre backs with pace. We look much better with Varane and Martinez because they are the fastest duo we have, and they have great anticipation. With Maguire, it becomes much more an issue.

I'm Not worried about Left back. Amass will be there soon. For LCB we shoud look at Brantwaite at Everton. He was excellent for PSV las season

It has improved to be fair, still not at the level I'd hope it would be though. He's adding assists to his game which is positive, 3 last season, 3 already this season. I believe he only had 2-3 assists in the 4 seasons before that.

His crossing is still inconsistent for me but he also doesn't get into crossing positions as much as I'd like. Though it's possible that's down to instructions.

Really good post this. Don't disagree with anything.

He's showing a good level of performance and is important for our attacking game. It's not a coincidence that him and Garnacho have suddenly meant we can attack on either flank.

The upgrade is there and obvious in my opinion though, Frimpong at Leverkusen is a joke. Wishlist would be him, Onana and Todibo.

I think we're just so used to typing shit beside his name, we're finding it difficult to shake the habit. He's been really good lately. Certainly not got the credit he deserves.

Really coming into his own - it also shows the value of playing regularly at the top level. He's learnt the ins and outs of the role better because he is getting games in week in week out and that experience shows. We signed him as a 18/19(?) year old and expected the finished article. He's had injury problems and a couple of loans, but he's kicked on since he's been an established position in the first team. Good on him.

Absolutely. And the ones who do get mentioned as the players we should sign play in a team with 3 at the back and they are in midfield as right midfielders. Dumfries at Inter, Frimpong at Bayer. They track back like Garnacho and Rashford but its the RCB who is defending the RB area for most of the game, with them as the extra.

We dont play this system. We play 2 CBs who dont want to spend most of the game down the flank dealing with a winger with the ball. They want to be in the box defending there. And our fullbacks need to defend against the wingers and usually attacking fullbacks over and underlapping them and midfielders getting involved too. Thats why AWB and Dalot are high ball winners compared to most rightbacks, because they are given a lot to do by the opposition and theres plenty of times when they dont have a lot of support and have to deal with it defensively on their own.

He's been decent, but I think we've been so starved of quality fullbacks besides Shaw, that we're starting to develop tunnel vision.

Everyone wondering why he's getting better and saying its Ten Haag. But he's 24. Of course he's maturing. This is the problem with signing youngsters. Everyone expects the finished article when the truth is most players (not all) only start get to their potential around 24/25. Especially defenders.

He's shown more development this season in his whole time here, but when you stop to actually remember his age, this makes a lot of sense. I've definitely been too quick to judge on him a points. I think our perception is also a bit warped from having someone like Shaw, who at a young age was so consistent.

Spot on. Hell we were laughing at Trent relentlessly just a year ago watching him get torched every game and many would say he’s the best in the world. Cancelo was sold because of how poor he is defensively.

Great post, I think that pace and work rate from both Dalot and Garnacho is somehow underrated.

Personally, I don't agree with people who think we should look to upgrade on Dalot - we will struggle to find a better option at the market. It's not easy to find a player of his profile: great work rate, physicality and pace, very good technique and passing range, very good crossing, decent weaker foot, good at both defensive and offensive 1v1, can cover left back if needed etc.

I just look at it another way, he is a real asset to our squad and I'm sure that many top clubs in Europe would like to have him in their squad. Frimpong is on fire at Leverkusen, no doubt about his talent, but they are very, very different profiles.

What we need to do in the market to raise Dalot's game even more and this team in general is to sign a centre back who is technically sound in possession, has pace, aggression and who would be comfortable in 1v1 situations down that channel out of possession. I think it would be much more beneficial to sign a player like Todibo than a new right back.

I just love Dalot for this quote alone: "We have a chance to be remembered as the players who brought Manchester United back". Some people were just too quick to judge him ignoring the fact that he came here very young without any noticeable first team experience. Get him all support, there is a player in that fella.

Feels like he's been around forever, he's only 24, 25 in March. Has developed nicely, apparently works hard, trains hard. He needs to get better and more consistent in opinion to be holding down this role long term but I think he can.

Not sure why people keep saying he ‘was good apart from that chance he gave Luiz’. It was a great intervention on the stretch and all he could do was get something on it on his weaker foot with a man getting in behind. Whatever happened in the next phase of play would have had to be dealt with then, but he had to cut out the danger, and his body position at the time in mid-air meant he was never going to have the luxury to control the clearance on his weaker foot.

He’s doing very well at the moment, credit to him.

Nah. He's just a good player. Pretty often he starts ahead of Cancelo for Portugal.

What a cross. Quality assist.

If he can get consistentcy in his game he'll be a top right-back IMO
