I know it’s been said a million times but it’s just mind boggling that this man became POTUS. It really is like living in one of the most unrealistic Black Mirror episodes. We’ve gotten so used to his behaviour but if you take a step back and really consider just how bizarre it is, it’s really difficult to grasp.

The thing to remember is that we've lived through a bonafide psychopath being the most powerful human on earth (at the start of his presidency) and the world is still more or less as fecked up as it was before. I was fearing a lot more carnage outside US borders.

Apparently they think it would be very hard to go after Trump personally with criminal charges because Allen Weisselberg is refusing to testify against him. Instead they’re going after the Trump Org and it’s likely to bankrupt him as lenders will call in their debts

Im assuming any legal case against the trump org is going to take a couple of years?

I think most of the debt is due in that timeframe anyway

I had assumed he would refinance somewhere and my gut feel is he still probably will... and if not surely the debt is in a limited company and he will just file for chapter 11 and spin it as him being smart

eg... this is his wiki page

Business bankruptcies[edit]
Further information: Legal affairs of Donald Trump § Use of bankruptcy laws
Although Trump has never filed for personal bankruptcy, hotels and casino businesses of his have declared bankruptcy[52] six times between 1991 and 2009 due to its inability to meet required payments and to re-negotiate debt with banks, owners of stock and bonds and various small businesses (unsecured creditors).[53][54] Because the businesses used Chapter 11 bankruptcy, they were allowed to operate while negotiations proceeded. Trump was quoted by Newsweek in 2011 saying, "I do play with the bankruptcy laws—they're very good for me."[55][56]

The six bankruptcies were the result of over-leveraged hotel and casino businesses in Atlantic City and New York: Trump Taj Mahal (1991), Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino (1992), Plaza Hotel (1992), Trump Castle Hotel and Casino (1992), Trump Hotels and Casino Resorts (2004), and Trump Entertainment Resorts (2009).[52][57][58] Trump said "I've used the laws of this country to pare debt. ... We'll have the company. We'll throw it into a chapter. We'll negotiate with the banks. We'll make a fantastic deal. You know, it's like on The Apprentice. It's not personal. It's just business."[47]

Where do you see Trump getting that sort of finance from? The likes of Deutsche Bank have already abandoned him, he’s no use to his Russian financiers anymore. With a criminal case against the organisation, lenders will be recalling debts from him, nobody is going to be offering him new finance.

And this is why he will 100% be running in 24.

24 is about 18 months too far away for him.
I don't think that is how he sees it. Once the walls start closing in I would bet a decent chunk of money that that declares he is running. This will allow him to frame the indictments as politically targeting a presidential candidate and banks who refuse to do business the same way. I am not saying this will work, but this may be the strategy. I think this is why he has refused to commit to running as he is saving that as an exit strategy from legal troubles.

Actually I expect hiscurrent lenders will help him arrange something - if not direct with Deutsche they will still be largly incentivised to help him becuase if not he will go chapter 11 and they will loose most of the money - if they can rearrange finance they get their money

Given he is seemingly the front runner for 2024 for the republicans (how thats happened is totally another debate but sufffice it to say I dont see it as a positive for america) Im sure there be soverign wealth funds that could arrange financing like that (probably through many layers of obscuring things) and afford to write it off as an actual investment but potentially seeing it as a soft power move - Saudi, China even? (and lets face it Im sure the donald could invent another bogey man to take their pace pretty quick if enough money was on the table)

Depending on how those loans are structured I would be interested to see if maybe the lenders don't just make a play to take possession of the properties. Real estate is insanely hot at the moment and everything I have read suggests Trump is a horrific businessman (he lost money on a casino. A CASINO!), so he might not be getting the true value out of the properties. Of course that idea is moot if the law prohibits the banks from doing so.

He's not. Ron Desantis will be the frontrunner. Trump's support is already eroding and the Reps are pivoting to Desantis

Not a chance Desantis wins the primary if Trump runs.

Edit: If Trump runs I bet there is little chance Desantis challenges him. He NEEDS Trumps base to have a chance in the general, so no way he alienate them in a primary.
thats how I see it as well... dont think Haley would run against trump either ... Im not even sure Cruz would

I think most serious candidates would wait it out for 2028

We'll see. Trump personally is on the decline with a host of issues. His base is less loyal to him than what he represents - entitled American exceptionalism + a dose of western chauvinism. What some of my friends who have been traveling the country the last few months have been seeing: most of that base are more loyal to an idea of America than they are to Trump personally. He just captured a moment. I can't see him able to maintain it for another 3 years especially without twitter and facebook. He's already receding in the consciousness of the average American.

Average Americans are not the majority of primary voters

From what I'm hearing and seeing myself, there is definitely a "Trump fatigue" among many of the GOP base. Trump's biggest gains came from non-white voters. This increase isn't coming from die-hard Trump Or Bust types but from people who fit more into the narratives explained by George Packer. Voter restrictions, and peeling off minorities where western chauvinism has an appeal looks like a smarter strategy than trying to revive 2016 in a post-pandemic world. I think over the next 2 years Trump will increasingly become less of an influence (unless miraculously Twitter lets him back on and the mainstream news starts giving him hours of free promotion every night like they did in 2015-2016.

I don't disagree with this when it comes to Republican's in general or the country as a whole. However, primaries are usually won by the candidate who can run the closest to the ideals of the hard core base. Currently that base is STILL vastly pro-trump. Beyond that, if Trump runs I can not see anyone running against him. Why? Because if he loses there is absolutely no way he will do it gracefully and then support the eventual winner. This would peel enough of the base off that the winner would get crushed in the general, and many down ballot races as well. Actually, the Dems best hope is that Trump does run and then loses the primary to Desantis. The result would be a GOP bloodbath.

I think the entire climate is shifting. Some Trump or Bust I've encountered I wouldn't rate as "likely primary voters". Especially the conspiracy types seem to be drifting away from sure thing primary voters while a lot of more conventional Republicans seem to be energized, at least at the moment, and would be likely primary voters.

Even if this is true there is still no way he loses gracefully and gets behind the primary winner. He will do his usual "stolen election" bit and 10-20% of the GOP will just not vote in the general. It is much more likely he just doesn't run, but this circles back to him running just to hold of indictments.

At one point he'll be assassinated politically by the GOP. They have too much dirt on him.

Him running against the GoP would be the end of them both. But trump doesnt care. He's never a team player.

Yeah, I don't think he will end up running. As his standing deteriorates, I think by the time it comes down to it he won't do it.

Everything was surreal. From winning to the 2016 election to leaving on a plane with My Way playing in the background on Biden's Inauguration.
And all in between. Crazy.

Its not though when you consider there are only two parties for the electorate to choose from for a gullible electorate that falls for the same shit all the time. I honestly dont know who the must gullible people are, GOP voters or Tories.

It might be a bit of a stereotype but this is a classic sociopathic trait isn’t it? Keeping a trophy of those you have wronged for reinforcement of how big, powerful and clever you are.
