Poor, substandard pitch. 17 wickets on first day. Shouldn’t be allowed to host test matches again IMO.
Don't you know? It's the clearly superior bowling OR English conditions if seamers taken the wicket. BUT if spinners took 17 wickets it's not allowed and the pitches are substandard.. Keep up with the doublestandards KM!

Not sure if serious
Please do put forward when was Stokes' last 5 for, or last century with the bat?

Root didn't score any centuries in Australia, both are seemingly now past their prime.

Hopefully, somehow, they can have a decent second innings, as Lord knows their first ones against New Zealand, were beyond poor.

Name recognition shouldn't be a reason to get in the side.

Stokes last century was literally 2 months ago in the last series. Root is currently the best red ball batter in the world.

Using time for Stokes (even though you were categorically wrong) who missed almost the entirety of the last year of cricket is also very carefully selected and, quite prickish.

I'm confused, particularly about Root. He averaged 61 in 2021 to 2022 and scored 1708 runs. That's the highest average and most runs in his career for a calendar year.

It’s been one innings in the home fecking summer and you are saying Root and Stokes are past there prime?

Why don’t we wait a bit before making daft assessments like you have.

Hilarious that there were 17 wickets but its got nothing to do with pitch. The outrage if this were in Chennai.

Foakes' white ball record not giving me great faith he's gonna do anything special with these two.

Good thing England decided not to pick the most in form batsman they had available for this one.

There's your answer.

It'll be a great day when our "batters" put away the wafty drive at wide deliveries - just leave the ball!

Can the Indian lads move on from the spinning wicket. Everyone else has.

And you smacked us in that series anyway. Weird.

spin on day one- bad, swing on day one- good?. Ok. I get it
Okay I’ll bite.

1. There wasn’t that much swing at all. The conditions were fine for batting.
2. A pitch is prepared purposely by the ground staff. Cloud cover and atmospheric conditions are not.
3. Why comment if you clearly didn’t watch?

One thing McCullum’s going to have to figure out is how to get some ruthlessness into this England side. Over the last few years they’ve got into plenty of good positions only to squander them with an hour/session of madness. To have New Zealand 45-7 and to be 92-2 in response and to still be looking at trailing after the first innings is daft.

Yesterday needed Root/Stokes/Bairstow just to dig in and get to the close, really disappointing from England’s most experienced batsmen.

Foakes's average drifting towards the mid-20s now.
He reminds me of 'insert player here' that becomes the saviour when injured at Utd.

It was Cleverley years back, Donny until spring this year etc etc.

Sound great until you pick em and see them play.

Yep. An extra batter in this line up will bring far more than a specialist wicket keeper.

At least Foakes looks good on team photos. Very handsome man.

It’s clear that we just don’t have any top test keepers at this stage, or at least ones who can bat as well.

everybody has moved on, it is just hilarious seeing the outrage of English pundits on that series and yet they've kept quiet about yesterday. White privilege n all.

I’d just take Bairstow’s average of 38 with the gloves and give Brook the middle order slot. But I guess we’d be a decent slipper down now too.

An extremely slow over rate saved day 1 from being an even bigger shambles. 21 wickets have fallen in 86 overs...

Batsman had no chance there. More wild, unplayable swing from Anderson.

I'd give Buttler one more go in the second half of the summer. This environment should be tailor-made for him.

If he can't do it in this environment, then he never will. But we should give him every opportunity because the upside is so high.

If Buttler fails again, find an up-and-coming keeper from county cricket who can bat (Bracey perhaps). They clearly don't fancy Bairstow's keeping.

Buttler’s time has been and gone, let him go and captain the white ball side when Morgan packs it in after the World Cup. As for who should be the test keeper I haven’t the foggiest, but I’ve seen enough of Jos is five day games at this stage, let him stick to what he’s magnificent at.

They can’t keeping going back over old ground. The number 5/6 slot needs to ring fenced to enable us to nurture our best young talent into test quality players. It looks like we’ve broken Pope already with how we’ve shifted him around, we can’t do the same with Brook.

I fancy a half decent dig from NZ here which will be good enough to see us off . Doom.

Bowlers won't have the same zip. Can Potts comeback again after the high yesterday?

Oh stop it with Bracey. The lad looked all over the place at Test level, proper bin juice. Jamie Smith at Surrey looks promising, be worth bearing in mind at least for the next year or two, still only 21.
