I wasn't quite old enough to properly follow Euro 96 in real-time, but from this coverage it does seem like it was a pretty poor quality tournament, with not a great deal of quality of show, the lowest goals per game ratio of any European Championship or World Cup since 1980 and empty seats galore.

The standard just seemed so much higher at France 98 and Euro 2000 which were both excellent tournaments.

Good win , a draw against the Dutch will do , think it will be a tough game though .

England were dreadful in that first half, didn't have a shot on goal. Scots neat and tidy but lacked quality in final third.

I believe things pick up now.... ;)
Didn’t see the replay tonight but that’s how I remembered it first time round. England had a good 15-20 minutes after the break which made the difference. Tactical switch at half time gave England an overload Scotland couldn’t handle. Redknapp started to dictate but it was McManaman who was outstanding for England, their best player for the second game in a row IMO. The attacking level they hit there, repeated against Holland and Germany was obviously outwith Scotland’s reach, as solid as we were.

Still, next 15 minutes Scotland were the better team and Seaman’s save from Durie’s header doesn’t get the praise it deserves. Draw probably would have been the fairest result, but Gazza had a higher ceiling than anyone else on the park.

Yeah second half England upped the tempo (pretty much just by telling McManaman to cut infield and run directly at Scotland's back 3 which created more space for likes of Neville on the overlap).

England had good spell for first 10 minutes but even then after just sat back on the 1-0 like the Swiss game. Didn't realise how late the penalty was, thought it was around hour mark so really the second game could've easily been a repeat of the Swiss one for England.

Also remembered what a good midfielder John Collins was around that time (he moved to Monaco after the tournament). Very good on the ball and him, Gary Mac and McCall was a very solid midfield three. Scotland defence was also good but they hardly seemed to be any wingers in their squad for some reason, just endless mediocre strikers so no one you could get in running beyond a full back.

How the feck did Steve Stone have an England career?
He was decent for Forest around that time. Was just an industrious right sided player who could play wing back (England were playing 3-5-2 then). Pretty similar to Milner.

Not fat gutted. Hirsuteness of shoulders TBD.

We surely had better options.

We didn't start as 3-5-2. Taking Pearce off and tinkering with the formation changed things. Venables hadn't done his homework and didn't realise how shit the Jocks actually were. He gave them far too much respect.
