Id imagine we are only looking to activate his 1 year optional extension.

No problem with this as long as it's an extension and not a huge pay increase too. De Gea has been brilliant this year, and I had my doubts after a dip over the last couple of seasons. He is world class and apart from almost going to Madrid he has been loyal to the club. He probably had opportunities to go elsewhere but stayed.

Current contract expires in 2023 but has an option to extend a year. Same thing with Rashford.

We’ll probably extend both before they’ve even played under the new manager.

His last contract was already a huge mistake. New contracts for Bruno and De Gea with Rashford soon to follow will be weights on the ankles of ETH before he has even started his job. The idiots in charge haven't changed at all.

Focusing on upgrading other areas of the team, I get. Giving him a new contract when we already have the option to extend his current contract for another year, not at all.

With such obvious question marks over his suitability in an ETH team, I don't see why you wouldn't just activate the year's extension and push the decision back 12 months.

What could possibly be the benefit of offering him or Rashford a new contract now, rather than extending the current deals and letting the new manager come in and decide for himself?

Nah let him see out his contract and go back to Spain unless he's content with being number 2

Surely the club should be waiting for the new manager to come in and make his own assessments before rushing into giving out new contracts. A cynical person might say the board are getting in there quick before Ten Hag can say he doesn’t want these players.

I love the guy, he's been my favorite player post Fergie by far, but surely if they do extend it's on lower wages right? He's declined a lot and we should really be looking to get a different type of Goalkeeper, even his shot stopping isn't what it used to be.

this place is ridiculous, he's been one of the best keepers in the league this year. and bar last year, he has been for the last decade , and you all want rid for a shiny new toy because you think he doesn't suit the manager.

Ten Hag has said he wants input on transfers and the squad setup. if he was adamant De Gea doesn't suit he'd have said already.

Need to put those negations on the back burner and review once Ten Hag takes over. Give the manager time to review his squad.

I'd sat most of us don't want that.

Most of us want the decisions on who should be getting new deals, to be made by the new manager once he has settled in and can make an informed decision.

De Gea and Rashford have a year left on their current deals, and we have the option to extend both by a further year. There is absolutely zero reason we need to be offering a new deal now before the summer.

I don’t know but you could be right. Hopefully you are and it’s not the board selecting the squad through ridiculous contracts that no other team could or would ever match

On the one hand, his salary is completely ridiculous. He wouldn't get even half of that anywhere else. On the other hand, he probably deserves to be our best paid player (bar Ronaldo), considering he's been our most consistent performer in the last decade, has been in the PL team of the year 5 times, and won our player of the year many times.

Are we asking him to discuss a contract with another club?

The man can't even get into Spain's squad and Enrique was the 2nd favourite here to be the permanent manager.

Well we can’t exactly let him go for free, and it would be dumb to sell him in the summer. GK is the last priority. Unless Henderson finally steps up.

I like De Gea but I hope Ten Hag has the balls to feck him off if he isn’t his style of keeper - which I suspect is likely

To be honest, don't know if he has been our best player over the last few years. He's certainly one of the longest running common denominators in a squad full of spoofers. He shines when we are rubbish because there's no pressure on him and he looks great making spectacular saves while stuck to his goalline.

The couple of times we have threatened to do anything of note in recent years, he's shat the bed. Back in Spain they have always said he was weak under pressure.

Like Wan-Bissaka is a spectacular slide tackler - De Gea is a spectacular shot stopper. It depends whether you think being world class in one single facet and then bang average in pretty much every other aspect of your position is good enough to earn a top wage at a club that says it wants to challenge at the top.

Personally I don't. He is poor at coming off his line, a very poor communicator, one of the weakest keepers in the league at dealing with crosses, a very average distributor, he isn't a dominant presence inside his box and despite being one of the highest paid and longest serving players at the club, he is in no way an effective leader from the back.

Does having excellent reflexes and decent agility make up for all those shortcomings and warrant the bones of £400k a week? Not a chance for me.

But again, if Ten Hag came in and spent a pre-season in training with him, seeing enough that he decides he wants to offer him a new deal - I'd be all for it. I just don't think this decision should be being made before he's in the door.

When there is a contract extension available, we can afford to wait for that.

Guessing from Romano. He was saying we were renewing Shaw a year ago. Still nothing.

We probably will though. After the daft Bruno contract it wouldn't surprise me.

This club ll never change. Put him on massive wages again and we won’t be able to get rid off him

People do realise he’s a really great goalkeeper right? Yeah his distribution could be better but there’s no better shot stopper in the world.

He hasn't been even one of our best 5 players since 17/18, this is the 1st season he has been in the conversation since then which is way too long for the player with the highest wages at the club.

Offer of a new contract on Rangnick's advice I assume?
