I was so small time that I was hoping he'd score an own goal until I watched a game where United were the aggressors at the Nou Camp. Thought de Jong was largely anonymous, but I still want him.

He can't cope with the high intensity in English football.
Ismail Bennancer will be a cheaper and better alternative.
High intensity? Frenkie is arguably the best pressure-resistant midfielder in European football at the moment.

Well, lord Fred almost made KdB (arguably a better player than FdJ) non-existent.
So did dvb, how's that worked out?
The difference in quality between Donny and Frenkie is night and day. Every Dutch football fan could have tell you that Donny at United was not going to work out. Donny is arguably the least talented player of that 2018/2019 Ajax squat. Typically a player who thrives only in certain circumstances.

A midfield with Frenkie together with Casemiro would be scary. Casemiro-Frenkie-Bruno would be close to being the best midfield in European club football.

He did NOT want to come to us, even after all the shit Barca and Xavi put on him.

Why would anyone still want him? He can suck one, he saw first hand what he's missing out on with ETH and United

Exactly, despite Barca trying their best to push him out, he refused to come to us. Do not want him anymore, we need to look at other options.

Serious doubts about De Jong’s character and appetite to make his mark in games. He looked like a player who wanted to win everything and be the driving force in every game.

Don’t particularly care for his mindset at Barca, where it can be argued he’s misused and has the world on his shoulders, but he was the same limp-wristed fop at the World Cup; a stage where he should’ve been giving his showings of a lifetime, or at least not being as passive as he was.

Rate his ability, but he’s not the sure thing his early Ajax exploits suggested.
I don't know when I've last seen him and not been underwhelmed by his character and presence on the pitch; just shows no appetite for any kind of battle; if the game becomes a contest, he just doesn't step up and have his class shine through.

By rating, he is supposed to be the second or third best midfielder on the pitch on paper, but you wouldn't know it by watching him passively fade out as routinely as he does. At the same time, the best midfielder on the pitch (by repute and trophies won), is playing with the hunger and desire of some rookie trying to make a big enough impression to have the big clubs come in for him.

I see no desire to impress himself upon games. He's reaching Van De Beek levels of meekness relative to the talent he has.

Beat them in the second leg, get a war chest ready for summer and let's see what happens, I'd still fancy our chances of signing him and I think Eric thinks the same.

Well its a good thing you have exactly zero influence on which player Erik ten Hag or Manchester United is going to buy.

You dont want him, ten Hag does.

Think i'd rather get Bellingham to partner Casemiro.

If we have a war chest for the summer then go and get Bellingham rather than FDJ.

His passing from deep was generally decent. But not sure if he would handle EPL's intensity well if he plays from deep.

The time Fati stripped him from behind, when he's trying to chase Fred

Poor guy plays for the wrong team. On his ass, wondered what happened.

It was only one game against us, but seriously would people feel sad we didn't get him?

Half of the starters were more impressive for me tonight in what was a high pressure game.

We should all send flowers to his girlfriend.
He would be eaten in EPL and we wouldn't get Case.

I just don't see him as a midfield orchestrator we need. He may be perceived as one, but he just isn't that.

There should be better options. If we are after a player to roam with the ball, my guess is that Bellingham is better suited to that role.

Judged on what last night I wasn't overly impressed, tidy with the ball, technically ok but no product or output. Got donny van de beek vibes from him.

Find it hard to judge players from that match and at Barca in general. Its a team were the sum is less than the parts by a fair margin.
First half with Pedri on the pitch hes redundant. He's a safe and easy pass back that Pedri and Gavi are never going to need. He's kind of decent when they have to defend but let a couple of runners go and doesn't really warrant a place in a team on just that. 2nd half was better for him personally but we kind of bullied their wider defence, i think there was a few weak links back there and he wasn't one of them but hes not much of a solution either. As a player with a reputation for being press resistant Fred gave him a lot of grief. Maybe i should credit Fred on that front? The entire team just didn't look prepared or able to deal with the speed of the game in the second half. They coughed up a lot of chances and a more clinical team would have buried them.
Its a bad fit. As a team Barca only really need one of Pedri, Gavi and De Jong. They'd be a better team with weaker players who actually fit as a #6 who's a defensive specialist and a #10 who could get a bit closer to Lewandowski, stop him being so easy to isolate and can pitch in with some goals and assists. You can fit in 2 of them, I dont think Lewandowski is the right striker for that but they're good enough you could make it work with the right players at full back and on the wing. They dont need 3 though and as good as each is individually they make a weak midfield collectively.

Thought he was excellent for Barca tonight.
I don't think he's excellent, but I don't think he got pressed out of the game, dominated, bullied... like some people said. He got forced into making mistakes, just as even our best performances of the night did.

Overall he's doing decent enough in a sub optimal for his natural ability. Barcelona doesn't have enough runners with pace to stretch our formation. Even if one of their players could evade four first pressing wave, they couldn't progress ball fast enough. Too many passing back forth between themselves.

I haven’t watched him loads but when I have he’s never stood out as anything special.
Same. Have seen him only a handful of times and not once have I seen a world class midfielder. Must be great against the likes of Eibar, Las Palmas and Almería.

Anyway, I think the boat has sailed unless Barca gets into some problem with the ref consulting project.

I would totally agree IF we could find another player who has that unique ability to dribble through midfield, however I'm struggling to think of anyone who fits that criteria

He's very quick and does at nice little spin move.
He’s definitely good at getting out of tight spaces. My issue is that he’s been deemed as this playmaker but whenever I watch him passing is boring or sloppy.

I think the players are out there who fit the profile. Frenkie de Jong is definitely one of those players but there's others who also look interesting. And it's not only about being able to dribble, but being able to dribble/carry the ball whilst maintaining a high pass percentage and passing the ball forward.

Can you suggest a couple of names?
