While I'm not overly enamoured with this shout, I do think it's one worth considering in the short term. So...

Would anyone take a cheeky Cahill bid of sub £15m in order to alleviate our LB problem?

Main Pros
  • Blind to LB. Senior player in that spot.
  • English quota CB with proven fitness record (certainly vs Jones).
  • Proven PL title experience.
  • Has played well alongside Smalling for England.
Main Negative
  • He's probably not a starter when all fit.
Now there are some other issues at hand to consider - both good and bad.
He's unlikely to be excessively cheap and would need to be playing now regularly in the short term.
Blind to lb is good for the short term but reverts him back to versatility man status in the long term (spoiler alert - I like Daley).
Cahill's injury record is better than most of our CB's.
He's droppable - ie not a guaranteed starter every game.
Has ball playing skills to a better degree than Phil Jones.
He's also not a world beater or a great improvement on current players.
It consigns Rojo to full time LB when fit.
He's a Jose minion.

Depending on fee - Yes. He's better than Jones who can't stay fit anyway.

Not sure I follow these points. Hypothetically, who starts ahead of Cahill when everyone is fit if Cahill is better than Jones, and both Blind and Rojo are considered LB options only?

Decent player with good experience. I wouldn't be against going for him, but I'd hope that there were better options for us to pursuit in the summer.

If we can't get someone with real quality then sure.

30 years of age, i thought he was a bit older. At 30 defenders usually have a couple of years left in them to play at a high level, would not consider it as a catastrophous signing to be fair. Remember we signed Blanc at 35, so there have been other ocassions of 'questionable' signings, although Blanc redeemed himself after a slow start.

Cahill is 30 his trajectory is only going to decrease from here.

Might be a decent stop-gap signing depending on wages and fee but i'd prefer we get some high potential players in.

The first point of discussion should be the hefty transfer money that Chelsea's going to make.

I would still rate Blind as our best option at CB after Mike. I consigned Rojo to LB role only but was getting at Blind being needed at LB as a priority right now.

Never rated him that highly... not that he's terrible or anything, but always thought he needs a proper leader next to him to a) know what to do and b) do it well.

He's like a slightly well-off man's Lescott.

Looks like a clear out is happening. May bite us in the arse though.

God no, was always baffled how he lasted so long as a starter for Chelsea. I genuinely think he's absolute dross.

I get you now. I'd agree with that too.

Blind gets a hard time, often a little unfairly. I'd still prefer a natural centre back next to Smalling, but Blind has done well there. He is the best of the Van Gaal signings, IMO.

Wonder what the fee will be, cannot see him being sold for less than £40m.

He'd be our second best defender by default, but then so would a number of other CB's we could go after.

He's everything that's wrong with what people think a good defender is. He's a very average defender with good technical ability. It's why people are creaming over Stones, although defensively, neither are very good. At least Stones will improve that side of his game.

No thanks.

We don't need to be bringing in any more average squad fillers. Every signing from here on in, needs to be either a young talent, or immediately improve the quality of the squad. Cahill offers neither.

We've used up our allocation of Liverpool type signings. Standards need to be higher.

He won't take a 18-month deal. He can easily get a 3.5-year deal from a more desperate club.
Sure wages would be a factor and our stature / offer of Europa league probably beats other offers.

Think I'd only be happy with a loan until the end of the season or an 18 month deal. Neither of which will happen.

He'll be leaving Chelsea for first team football though and I'm not sure we will be able to assure him of that. He's really not that good.

why? there are certainly no football based reasons

Because I don't really rate Cahill, I don't mind McNair and would rather give the young lads the chance for the rest of the season considering its a write off. What would be the point in signing Cahill now? He isn't good enough to be a starter for us if we want to be serious next season.

Christ, I didn't realise he was 30!

I seriously thought he was still in his mid-late 20's. Only feels like he's been round a few years.
