We’re spending £70million minimum regardless aren’t we.
Exactly why we should be looking at spending less on midfield, then would allow us to have gone big for Osimhen. Certain we won't see our name linked to Kane again this summer.

Apparently he isn’t our first or 2nd choice. But if every strikers are costing us 100m+ why not give him a go at 80m?
I don't think it's a case of "why not give him a go" is it?

If the football club is going to spend 80 million pounds and also commit to a striker which represents an opportunity cost in relation to other forwards that may be out there then the reasoning has to be compelling. It must be backed up by scouting, analytics, style, personality, solid reasoning he is a top flight PL player. We can't just do it on a whim. Hope isn't good enough really, we need to get this one right so everything should be lining up.

Is everything lining up with Ramos? Not sure. There's good and bad points as far as I can see. I like the goalscoring positions he gets into and good finishing. I like his athleticism and overall play a good bit less. Think he'd have some work to do at this level of club. But still, he's fairly young.

I get where your are from but it’s not like we have many choices there. At least considering his age and stats, he should be decent value at 80m.

I'm not sure it should be that great value, it might be, it might be poor. 80 million is still a lot, even in this market. The kind of number where you're not really hedging towards low risk given where he's coming from. It's not a fee you just recover from if it doesn't work.

That's very much a fee where all options are on the table. If he becomes world class, an elite forward it's definitely value, but if he's absolute crap and scores 10 goals it's an unmitigated disaster with little hope to recover it because he came from Portugal and everyone will be wondering if he's exposed. Somewhere in between and it becomes a bit of an Antony, an exorbitant fee for a player from a lower quality league playing in a dominant side and you're left scratching your head a bit about why we went so far for dubious quality.

Basically I think there's a huge amount of recruitment team judgment required on this one. Definitely not like throwing down 50 on Mason Mount which incurs very low risk.

Yeah, I don't see this being a good idea. Imagine a front 3 of: Sancho - Ramos - Antony. Costing something like 250m.

Holy hell football has gone off the deep end.

The budget for Osimhen isn't just Ramos + 60... It is also the higher wages that would add another 50M over the contract period...

By the looks of it, we are not going to sign any decent striker at the price of “somewhere in between” this summer. That’s the sad reality. We might have to look for “Weghorst” type of stop gap option for again I’m afraid.

Just shows how completely mental the current transfer market when £80m is good value to "give someone a go" at our club that literall has zero strikers.

There are probably barely 10 players in the world should cost ovr £100m in my opinion, £80m s a huge fee, should be expecting top top establiished talent, lon gtime ago but that is what we sold ROnaldo for.

We have only spent that fee or above three times remember....and not very well so far either

I've not seen much of him, a few games in Europe and for Portugal, but he seems a little light weight for the prem. I think he would struggle.
I'd rather spend the money on hojlund, bit of pace and power about him, doesn't seem like he would be as easily bullied as Ramos

Don’t think he would adjust quickly enough as would take more time to settle and get used to change of league…..nice player though but at the monies being quoted high risk

Benfica supporting colleague mentioned at lunch that it seems like Ramos is coming to us. Said it's being talked about a lot amongst the fans and ITKs. Fee about €80m + add ons, they'd like the €100m eventually, but recognise there isn't much of a market for him at the full buyout.

I do genuinely have a Benfica supporting colleague, at work, I have another Benfica supporting colleague who is currently in Argentina, so not at work

Incidentally, the one here is called Goncalo

I mean that's fine but don't expect anyone to believe their view.

Portugese media are also among the worst in gossip.

I'm not claiming it's a done dealio, but just interesting to hear this from the fans and not the media

Not good enough for United from what I've seen. If Newcastle get him that's fine. I've no doubt he'll do ok, but we need a top level striker.

How come Newcastle, Liverpool and Arsenal seem more unaffected by FFP than us? Is it wages? Or have they all found ways around it like City?

Anyway I like Ramos, he's a better football than Nunez but weirdly Nunez seems more effective because of his physical traits. Don't know if Ramos will have the opportunities in front of goal that Nunez does because of this, but he'd probably finish them better if he gets them.

It comes down to 'historic spending', coupled to the fact we've been dreadful at selling players.

How are Newcastle able to get around FFP like this?! It's not like they make loadsamoney, nor do they sell their players for a lot.

Caveat: my understanding of FFP is rudimentary at best, so please do tell me I'm being a thicko if I am.

Can we please finally offload Martial and pay the fee for Ramos? If we can’t afford Kane and Oshi OK, but how far down the budget option do we wanna go? He is class and that’s today’s market, just pay it now instead of some panic buying shite late August after we lost the openers

You would think he's a much better option than Hojlund who's nowhere near ready to be starting every week in the PL

Is this guy though? Nunez, who was demonstrably a better player against better opposition, has struggled.

It's debatable isn't it, I have worries about all the strikers we're linked with there doesn't seem to be an outstanding candidate due to our budget

We'll end up spunking money on a player who isn't good enough and then spunk another load of money next summer to buy yet another striker.

How can Newcastle seriously be spending £200m under FFP?

Not a chance they make enough clean money

Find it difficult to say how well he'll adapt to the PL.

His main selling point is his ability to get chances, which had resulted in glowing stats in Portugal. But beyond that he's just a tidy-enough player without many outstanding qualities or weaknesses, at least to my eyes. So how do you know to what extent the increased pace/intensity of the league will hurt his ability to get those goals when it's not tied to obvious physical or technical gifts? It's quite a nebulous quality to bank on.

If that chance-getting ability did translate from Portugal to the PL though, or even decreased only by a bit, he'd certainly be the best option available this summer. To put those numbers in context:

Non-penalty goals per 90:

Haaland - 0.94
Osimhen - 0.82
Ramos - 0.73
Kane - 0.62
Taremi - 0.52
Hojlund - 0.43
Muani - 0.43

Non-penalty xG per 90:

Ramos - 0.80
Haaland - 0.75
Osimhen - 0.66
Taremi - 0.47
Kane - 0.43
Hojlund - 0.43
Muani - 0.37

Rule out Kane and Osimhen as options and none of the others targets we've been linked to have offered even close to the same level of goal threat in their respective leagues last season.

But it would still be a lot of money to spend just to get your judgement of him wrong on. Though options are scarce, so someone will take the chance at some point....

Do Newcastle even need a CF though?

I think I would prefer spending less on someone like Hojlund, as he's the profile we don't have - i.e. the fox in the box type movement. He has scope for improvement and worst comes to worst, you could recoup most of the fee back. Ramos, Kolo Muani, etc means there's literally no room for error, they simply have to be a hit.

Agree, seeing as it appears those three strikers that are proven in top leagues (Kane, Osimhen and Haaland) are all off the menu, I would like to see us try two cheap alternatives (assuming we can get rid of Martial), who are not "too expensive to fail", with the preference being Hojlund and Gift Orban (we can get Evan Ferguson at a later date). Having two players would also help alleviate the pressure, as one is not performing, we can hope the other one is on a hot streak. I fully expect some of these expensive strikers to flop, as Chelsea have experienced in recent years with Werner and Lukaku.

I also think we'll actually still create a bucket load of chances with Bruno and co next year, so we just need someone to tirelessly hit the box, instead of the hovering around the edge of the box we tend to get from all of our strikers. Their finishing doesn't even need to be elite to be effective.
