Harry Maguire (Out): Chelsea eyeing a shock swoop for Harry Maguire | Utd say not for sale

Yeah, this is how I feel. He is not a bad player, but he is in the worst moment of his career with us and his confidence is totally gone. He knows he doesn't have the trust or respect of a large part of United's fanbase and has become intrinsically linked with the club's recent struggles.

His price tag and the way he was bought, his ever declining form on the pitch (which is magnified because of his cost and his perceived status in the United and England teams), the constant chain of avoidable errors, the terrible media appearances and posts... everything has gone wrong for him; some of it his fault, some not. I think it is irrecoverable now though and seeing Varane and Martinez play so well together on Monday night was probably one of the final nails in the coffin for him.

I doubt he leaves this window unless someone throws big money at us but I see the captaincy being quietly moved onto someone else by way of Harry spending a lot of games on the bench before he ulimately goes next summer.
Also, I find it interesting that Erik said that Varane - Martinez partnership showed exemplary leadership when the player that Martinez replace was the fecking captain.
I think ten Hag doesn't trust Maguire anymore and I don't think he'll start any meaningful matches from now

edit. Found the quote after Liverpool match
"I think he (Lisandro) took the responsibility and I think he showed leadership with Rapha Varane on the pitch. They make a huge difference but that is what we have to bring but not just them two, we need more leaders. When you want a winning team, you want more leaders and you need spirit what we showed today."

I thought that was about Bruno.

Very damning on Maguire.

I reckon if EtH had his own way and/or a reliable backup, Maguire would be gone this window. Unfortunately, we have a million backup/academy centre backs and not one of them is reliable.

The thing is, it doesn't seem like something that can be fixed with Maguire. It's not that he's bad, it's that he's bad and he's slow, and he has the turning circle of a grounded jumbo jet.

I don't know how this can be coached out of someone if they are just an uncoordinated, immobile lump...

The same old problem exists with Harry in that most Premier league clubs cannot afford Man Utd type wages.

But it is also world cup year, i think Maguire wants to play as much as possible, i think he'd sacrifice some wages for that.

Huh? How does reinvesting in those help us be one centre back down for the season? You wanna play Gakpo at centre back?!

We have had too many CBs for a while, i think Lindelöf is an ok backup when Varane gets injured or Martinez is suspended. He fits ETH football better than Maguire too.

Even if that was true, we loaned out Bailly already, so we'd be down to Lindelöf and Tuanzebe as backups

We should keep him as backup, as I don't think Tuanzebe is anywhere near good enough. However, the mere notion of benching your £80m captain is mental, and I'm not sure he would go for it, especially with the World Cup being a matter of months away.

If our manager cannot make such big decisions, then he wouldn't last long here. Ten Hag showed decisiveness in the last match already. Big decisions should be our manager's bread and butter.

If there is interest and we get a decent bid then we have to sell. I don't think he's a bad player and I think he'd probably be a good signing for Chelsea or Leicester, but the wheels have come off his Utd career.

Oh no, what I meant was that it's mental seeing a player that cost 80m, was made captain and un-droppable by Ole, now being benched.

Yes, it's absolutely the correct decision and I'm delighted that ETH has made the call. We never should have bought him in the first place - I never rated him - but paying 80m and making him captain, was different levels of madness. I wish we would have shipped him out earlier in their summer, so that we could have used the funds for other areas and we could have picked up a cheap backup CB.

I want him sold, but we've left it very late in the window, and I would certainly rather he stayed as a backup than having Tuanzebe as an option. Problem is; there will be some on here, and in the media, obsessing over the fact that he's been benched and they'll be waiting - knives in hand - for a game when Martinez/Varane have a mare, so they can rip into ETH for dropping Maguire. It would have been best if he were just gone, instead of being benched.

Can we even sell him?
Won't we be 2 injuries from having to start Lindelof and will fish out of all people?

Unless we're planning to convert Scott to that role but he's kinda shit there.

There's still Tuanzebe, but yeah, depth certainly looks differently
Thought he was on loan but yeah we got him back it seems.

Anyway axel won't cut, he has regressed massively in his development, relying on him won't be very wise .

I think we could cope with Lindelof, Tuanzebe, Jones and Mengi as our backup centrebacks.

I agree, I dont like him starting games but at this moment we rather keep him

I think it'll be a season mostly on the bench for him, with some spells in the side when Varane inevitably gets injured.

And then he'll look to move next Summer.

Maguire is being used by Chelsea journalists to panic Leicester into selling Fofana. Makes sense for both United and Leicester to buy back Maguire for half the price they sold him to United.

The only way I could justify this is if this guaranteed getting someone's like de jong.

Other than that I pass, he's good enormous to be back up and I Ratner we don't end up having a center back crisis after 2 injuries in a year were the top 4 race seems to be tight.

Would Maguire agree to go back there though? I could possibly see a last-minute loan deal so he gets to play before the world cup.

A loan would make zero sense for us.

As I see it there are two options:

A) He stays and accepts to be a rotation options, which I highly doubt he would.
B) He wants to play every week and pushes for a move. If Chelsea sign Fofana for 80 million, I could see Leicester going in for Maguire for 45 / 50, in which case I think we would sell.

He needs to play before the WC if he has aspirations of going. He seems lost and looks nervous any time he needs to defend and needs to have the spotlight away from a big club.

No chance Maguire goes anywhere. We have 4 useable CBs, and Varane has shown he can't stay fit. Moving Maguire on would mean a reliance on the likes of Jones and Tuanzebe.

The real question is who is our 3rd choice CB? If it's Lindelof (when he gets back from injury), then Maguire simply has to leave.

Straight swap for Fofana.

An 80m centre back for an 80m centre back seems fair.

I don't think they care, he's their best CB by a mile and he only just signed a 5 year deal. They hold all the cards.

While I understand that we lack bodies as CBs, we must also acknowledge that if we don't play him regularly then his price will go down. If United had a half decent DOF then he would have sold Maguire to Chelsea for let's say 50m, they would get rid of Jones, they would have kept Bailly and they would have added someone on the cheap/free as cover

Maybe you should apply.

Seriously, do you think that we've got a half decent DOF? FFS we just spent the entire summer courting FDJ only to spend all the dosh on a 30 year old DM. We could have had Antony for way cheaper then we're getting him but we waiting till the end of the transfer window instead. Its evident that Murtough has no clue as being DOF which is fair enough since he had never covered the role before.

Yes we do - Lindelof is more than adequate as the third option in my opinion. In fact, you could argue he's ideal - he's pretty much as good as a CB can be without being disgruntled at not being a regular starter. You don't want a premier player in that role. For fourth there's Tuanzebe or Jones, if they stay. Given that historically the no 4 guy has basically played only when there's at least two injuries among the top 3 or in early cup games, I don't think that's a disaster.

Yep, I agree with all this. But maybe the concerns around Varane's ability to stay fit mean two Lindelof-quality backup CB's would be needed. Maguire certainly can't be in the squad as 4th choice though.
