How do we sell Harry Maguire?

I didn't abuse him for going to a memorial, I didn't harass him or send him a bomb threat so direct your concerns to the people who are doing that.

I do think he is a shit player and a shit captain and that going to the memorial is as obvious a pr stunt as imaginable.

I didn't say you did. You did do the rolleyes smiley though, sometimes isn't it just better to say nothing at all?

How is this going to help his PR if you're all so clever to see straight through it anyway?

If a couple rolleye smileys triggers you that much, perhaps it's you who needs to grow up.

I'm not his publicist so could give a flying feck about his pr, I am a fan of the football team he plays for though so my only concern when it comes to slabhead is his performance on the pitch when wearing a United shirt.

Genuinely think the likes of Di Maria and Tevez got less actual abuse than one of our own players. The hatred is really visceral at times.
It's even worse for our own academy players (see any Rashford, Pogba, Lingard thread)

If you care so little about what he does off the pitch then why are you posting rolleyes smileys about an activity he has done off the pitch?

He's done a good thing, he's captain of Manchester United and left England's camp to travel 15 miles the other side of Munich to visit the memorial. Nobody asked him to do that. Getting on his back for it is ridiculous.

Maguire was poor last year but so were so many others. Prior to that he was very steady and deserves a chance to get fit and put last season behind him.

So in short he aint leaving

Ridiculous isn't it. How do they expect these players to gain confidence again if they get shredded for every single thing they do?

Videos of them training - "Show it on the pitch"
Visiting the memorial, or some charitable event - "PR stunt"
Doing anything non-football related - "Focus on your football"

It's so fecking tiresome. I don't know how these people have the energy.
Football fans are so far and away the worst thing about football. This whole sorry mess just about sums it up, the man went to a memorial and that’s about it, but no somehow that is enough for some to call for the firing squad.

However, if certain other players did this it would be classy and a brilliant touch. Almost as if they’re just acting the dickhead for no reason.

Unsellable. But causes a big problem. And how can we sell the club to someone like Timber for example, when we have an 80M established international as our captain in his position. I don't think he's at all good enough, we were robbed. I know last season may be a blip - a low point, that he can recover from. I don't think he will but also, I don't think his natural level is good enough anyway. Let's see what ten Hag makes of him. First step would be to appoint a new captain. I don't think Maguire should be a starter, but I think he will be as I expect there will be ridiculous pressure on ten Hag to play him. Then if Varane is fit it's Varane and Maguire. How do we sell that to a new CB? Wait your turn behind Harry and Varane then it's between you and Lindelof to come in and cover for Varane when he inevitably gets injured? Tough sell. Or will ten Hag say to any new CB - you're my number 1 CB your partner will be Varane until he's injured then Lindelof or Maguire will cover for him. I don't see it. The more I think of it we are an abslute mess all over the team. So much work to do and I doubt ten Hag will be given the power to do it. Our best CB is always injured, our 80M signing and captain is dire and Lindelof isn't good enough either. How can a new CB come in and make that work, build a relationship on field with any of them? Moving Harry on would clear the way and simplify the situation but it can't be done. For a long time I've referred to him as Oles biggest mistake. And it maye continue to cause problems.

I think two rolleye smileys shows exactly how little i think of it. You're right though perhaps two was a bit much for slabhead. One would have sufficed.

I don't buy the obvious pr attempt and hopefully he won't be the captain for much longer.

If we are willing to loss our 89m asset Pogba for free, I don't see why can't we sell our 80m asset Maguire for 20-30m, of we really want to push for it.

Not everything has to “trigger” someone to warrant a response mate. If you think you’re not the one being childish here I’m not sure I can help you. Take a look around.

Simply put we thought he was Evra
But it turns out he's just Sacary Bagna
The problem is we paid him Rio money so we have a situation where Sacary Bagna is expected to perform like a prime Evra consistently

I agree with that. There are posters who justified Jones getting abused in front of his daughter, it's unreal how fecked up few people thinking is. All the reasons are "he is paid well and he is always injured"
Yep we have an unpleasantly high number of cnutish fans that would be an embarrassment even to the scouse or Chelsea.

That goes for Old Trafford too tbh. Our fanbase is deranged.

The Liverpool fans were nowhere near as toxic as ours to their own players.

Both statements can be true at the same time. Him getting over the top abuse, AND that picture being shared by british media being a PR stunt are not mutually exclusive. If this was Pogba noone in the media would share that picture.

Last few years has increased my respect for Liverpool fans a lot. They are too optimistic to the point that they are deluded but it's so much better than the toxic nature of this fanbase.

There are few idiots who abuse players at every club but I don't remember the situation like this at any PL club.

I'd take ridiculous optimism over bomb threats and attacking board directors' houses. I guess the fans fit the club at the moment.

At least he's actually doing it. Your complaint is the same as those that say celebrities only engage in charity causes for good PR. In effect, they (or Maguire, in this case) can't win. It's damned if you, damned if you don't in this day and age. Depressing.

Can’t believe I just saw someone use “triggered” in a non pisstake manner on here.

Actually, no, I can sadly.

Can't bring myself to hate on Maguire. He seems a decent guy and I have a feeling he really wants to do better for the club. I think the captaincy is too much for him but I also think he might go on to have a very good season next season. Like all of our defence, he needs some protection from midfield though. He's not as bad as this season has suggested.

Too rational for this forum. Call him shite and get out.

He's doing nothing. Charity has a tangible positive benefit, what slabhead did is only meant to benefit himself.

I don't see much unreasonable in this opinion. I visited my grandmother's grave last week; I didn't have anyone take a series of pictures of me doing somber poses while I was there.

Yup agreed. It’s likely a PR move and he’s getting over the top criticism for this.

How do you know if someone took photos and posted them without him even asking? You don't know if he even noticed or objected to it. He's not posted these images himself.

The likely scenario is that he didn't specifically ask for photos but was also fine with them being taken. He gets photographed all the time, it probably barely registers with him anymore.

Either way, nobody knows the details behind it but they're always quick to jump towards the negative conclusion.

I must again since nobody has answered. What positive PR does he stand to gain from this when all he predictably will get is a barrage of "PR stunt" "why has he had a photoshoot".

How has this improved his public relations?

Think it’s slightly unfair to jump to the conclusions about the PR stunt and considering the fact he was in Munich I’m glad the captain didn’t miss out on visiting the memorial.
Still, hope we manage to sell him this summer. Not at the level required

Genuine question, what’s this based on? Aside Maguire, I think fans put too much into people we see for 90 mimutes once, rarely twice a week, & in heavily doctored PR pieces. I don’t rate Maguire the player but I don’t delve into who he is as a person because shouldn’t the focus be on what we see on the pitch. Maybe I’m wrong & you’ve met him but this forum is quick to label players good or bad based on very little information which isn’t good in any walk of life.

I do believe tgg he at far too many fans have took the struggles of the team & made it personal against far too many of our players though, & that includes Maguire in a number of instances.

I'm still angered by Harry's poor performances this season, but there's no reason whatsoever to flog slabhead for paying his respects to the victims of the Munich disaster.

He's literally just engaging with the club's history. That shouldn't be cause to sneer, or to deride him. There's being cynical, then there's this.

Feel free to think it was a genuine attempt at engaging with the clubs history. I think it was a pr stunt and quite a cynical one at that.
