I don't think it will solve anything but the PL needs a wake up call from somewhere.
Isn't that just saying something/anything is better than the status quo? That approach rarely leads to good decisions imo.

Out of the frying pan, into the fire springs to mind.

Well the epl is dull as shit so hopefully it happens. The same old rubbish competition every year, with the same old blah blah blah. Any change is good. Chnage has always happened, but over the last 30 years people have decided everything must stay the same forever. Boring.
What? Watch another sport

JFC the responses to this thread are embarrassing

It is a few years European Basketball is doing a mid-week Superleague already, without sacrificing national leagues. All parties are happy.

The PL is the worst of the lot and the most detached from its fanbase. An ESL will affect all the leagues though and might just make them a bit more focused in serving the fans in order to keep them.
The whole idea behind the ESL is easy big money for the owners. Fans will be even less important

That won't matter as the founding clubs will get such a financial boost that they will be very far ahead of the rest. The bottom 3 will be consistent in coming up and going back down... be interesting to see the parachute payments or money earned for being promoted... if any!

It's back baby, Yeah!

Twelve of Europe’s leading football clubs have today come together to announce they have agreed to establish a new mid-week competition, the Super League, governed by its Founding Clubs.

AC Milan, Arsenal FC, Atlético de Madrid, Chelsea FC, FC Barcelona, FC Internazionale Milano, Juventus FC, Liverpool FC, Manchester City, Manchester United, Real Madrid CF and Tottenham Hotspur have all joined as Founding Clubs. It is anticipated that a further three clubs will join ahead of the inaugural season, which is intended to commence as soon as practicable.

Going forward, the Founding Clubs look forward to holding discussions with UEFA and FIFA to work together in partnership to deliver the best outcomes for the new League and for football as a whole.

The formation of the Super League comes at a time when the global pandemic has accelerated the instability in the existing European football economic model. Further, for a number of years, the Founding Clubs have had the objective of improving the quality and intensity of existing European competitions throughout each season, and of creating a format for top clubs and players to compete on a regular basis.

The pandemic has shown that a strategic vision and a sustainable commercial approach are required to enhance value and support for the benefit of the entire European football pyramid. In recent months extensive dialogue has taken place with football stakeholders regarding the future format of European competitions. The Founding Clubs believe the solutions proposed following these talks do not solve fundamental issues, including the need to provide higher-quality matches and additional financial resources for the overall football pyramid.

Competition Format

  • 20 participating clubs with 15 Founding Clubs and a qualifying mechanism for a further five teams to qualify annually based on achievements in the prior season.
  • Midweek fixtures with all participating clubs continuing to compete in their respective national leagues, preserving the traditional domestic match calendar which remains at the heart of the club game.
  • An August start with clubs participating in two groups of ten, playing home and away fixtures, with the top three in each group automatically qualifying for the quarter finals. Teams finishing fourth and fifth will then compete in a two-legged play-off for the remaining quarter-final positions. A two-leg knockout format will be used to reach the final at the end of May, which will be staged as a single fixture at a neutral venue.

As soon as practicable after the start of the men’s competition, a corresponding women’s league will also be launched, helping to advance and develop the women’s game.

The new annual tournament will provide significantly greater economic growth and support for European football via a long-term commitment to uncapped solidarity payments which will grow in line with league revenues. These solidarity payments will be substantially higher than those generated by the current European competition and are expected to be in excess of €10 billion during the course of the initial commitment period of the Clubs. In addition, the competition will be built on a sustainable financial foundation with all Founding Clubs signing up to a spending framework. In exchange for their commitment, Founding Clubs will receive an amount of €3.5 billion solely to support their infrastructure investment plans and to offset the impact of the COVID pandemic.

Florentino Pérez, President Real Madrid CF and the first Chairman of the Super League said:

“We will help football at every level and take it to its rightful place in the world. Football is the only global sport in the world with more than four billion fans and our responsibility as big clubs is to respond to their desires.”

Backing the new European league, Andrea Agnelli, Chairman of Juventus and Vice-Chairman of the Super League said:

“Our 12 Founder clubs represent billions of fans across the globe and 99 European trophies. We have come together at this critical moment, enabling European competition to be transformed, putting the game we love on a sustainable footing for the long-term future, substantially increasing solidarity, and giving fans and amateur players a regular flow of headline fixtures that will feed their passion for the game while providing them with engaging role models.”

Joel Glazer, Co-Chairman of Manchester United and Vice-Chairman of the Super League said:

“By bringing together the world’s greatest clubs and players to play each other throughout the season, the Super League will open a new chapter for European football, ensuring world-class competition and facilities, and increased financial support for the wider football pyramid.”

ESL won't stop oil money.
I think one of the main reasons clubs were interested in starting a Super League was to control PSG/City's spending in a way that UEFA can't. From all the reports last year every club joining up would have had to sign up to very strict spending/wage caps that would be enforced by the member clubs themselves not UEFA.

Call me a traditionist, but for me the Domestic League with some Domestic Cups and a two tier European League to Knock-Out Competition is good enough. Going back ages, it has worked.

The most prudent reasons for the ESL would lie at the hands of Clubs that can no longer compete in the CL ability wise, and those that want to take their revenues up to meet their crippling operational debts.

There is no appetite to introduce cost cutting that could involve reduced salaries, ticket prices and a fairer game for all.
It's going the wrong way. This ESL will expedite that.

As long as a "top 4 qualification" format like the Champions League has you requires to do to compete for it stays, then I'd be fine with it.

Does anyone know if that's the case or they are just picking the most famous clubs for a league of their own? That would be wrong.

Another thing I think about is how a manager like Conte is quite consistent in winning season long league titles but not ever winning a knockout type competition the current CL is.

Maybe it's like that for a reason.

Unless the rule is "no state funded teams", then all the caps, laws, declarations and restrictions are simply piss in the wind.

How are 12 clubs going to police how money is spent, banked and transferred within Saudi or Abu Dhabi? They obviously can't.

It's a farce - just a simple power/money grab with window dressing.

Project SuperLeague :
  1. No permanent members
  2. Team qualified thanks to the results it obtains in its league
  3. 20 members - all leagues will have a chance to win a place through the qualifying phase
  4. Second league of 20 members
  5. Reduced number of matches

No EPL clubs involved? not sure I buy this, considering the announcement (from most major accounts) includes 4 EPL clubs, including United.
this is the future, it will happen. and I have to assume some EPL clubs are on board.

They’ll eventually join.

The two groups of 10 isn’t too dissimilar to the proposed new UCL format if memory recalls.

There you are!

The bolded is the crux; I know your assertion is that state sponsored clubs and their spending can't be police, it's impossible. Which would make this Super League DOA. However if it did work, or if it could be proven that a framework that constrains spending of even oil clubs exists, then UEFA can, and should be implementing that framework immediately.

That's actually part of my problem with it

SL should replace both imo. The practicalities of how to do that still elude me though :D
Why? There's surely much more history between Real Madrid and, say, Valencia, or Athletic Bilbao, than Chelsea or Man City. Likewise, I'd rather see United playing the likes of West Ham and Everton than Dortmund and Inter Milan. The CL is great but replacing the domestic season with all European ties would be the end of football for me.

Nothing to argue about really. This is just a better Champions League without UEFA's involvement. Better football, less dead rubber games, better viewing experience.

They just need to clarify how a team loses their place in the Super League and qualifies for the Super League. As long as that's fair for all teams in each domestic league, good riddance to UEFA.

Not true. Slovenia is the fourth placed team from the Olympics and we haven't had an Euroleague participant in 9 years due to the ridiculous rules. The basketball league has gone away from a diverse fun competition to one that is just a discount version of the NBA and is losing viewers.

Athletic sure, they should be in the SL imo. Valencia? Feck them honestly  couldn't give a rat's arse about them. Actually I kind of do. Peter Lim forever.

Much rather play Liverpool
