I'm lazy and I don't want to read back a few pages.... can someone update me with the very latest in the Sancho saga?

How likely are we to get him now? As a percentage?

Cheers

Price is 120 mil, if we pay it we'll get him. If not he'll stay. That's basically that.

Nothing has changed. Ever.

He wants to come. He won’t push for a move.

We’ll get him if we pay, but we don’t want to.

I’d say at very best, it’s about 50/50, but more likely about 25% I’d say

He’s obviously a good player but Sarr can’t really be compared to Sancho at this stage. He doesn’t score or assist nearly as many so if you buy him you know you’re gambling on/waiting for that improvement.

And he's over 2 years older than Sancho so he's probably less likely to have that improvement.

Financial discipline in a time of crisis is priority number 1 for any prudently run business. There will be no fans for probably the entire season ahead and people still expect us to smash our transfer record.

I have no problem with us not paying Dortmund a pre covid price and I hope we dont turn out to be the one and only idiot club to pay over 100m for a player this window. If we have to wait another season then so be it.

I think this was on earlier in the window with United nervous about the price and playing a bit of a waiting game to see if it came down, but now with the spike in covid cases and talk of a second lock down that could halt football completely again. That would impact all prem clubs and again reduce the TV money. United are to unsure of their income to make such a big investment. I've been convinced this was going to happen, but the virus is going to kill the deal for this window now I think.

I didn't actually click into the thread but wasn't there something about us applying to let fans in as early as the Villa game?

What's this talk about second lock down about?

Agreed it’s a lot of cash in uncertain times. Might not have fans in stadiums for this season and maybe many after that! We can’t be listening to a valuation that hasn’t dropped at all since covid.

What really fecks me off about this situation is 4 clubs around us have bought a RW when we so desperately needed one. Rather than chasing this cause for months we could have signed any of these players! Every season it’s the same thing. If you can’t get it done in a month move on.

Arsenal - Willian
City - Torres
Chelsea - Yiyech
Spurs - Bale

Well its being talked about a lot, could happen in the next few weeks. I think most people thought we'd go into another lockdown in October back in April time so it wouldn't be a big shock, especially with how we've been handling it as a country, bloody terribly.

Pretty much every country is going through a second lockdown its not just the UK.

We want Sancho not just any winger. Why would we sign Willian when the plan was always to get Sancho even if it doesn’t happen it wouldn’t have made sense at the time he joined Arsenal.

Well this is the only way to show how serious if a player want the move now. Sancho so far hasn't indicated he want to move and seem ok with staying for another year at Dortmund, which make them in strong position to keep him.

Considering he's under contract and they pay him very, very well he should have a bit more about him to start acting up just to get a move to another club. If we bid and they accept it then it's different, but until then he should train hard and wait it out.

Here in Croatia they're all about how we wont have another lock down but once things start to close down it will be basically like a lock down although not called that.

Basically this mean Sancho want the move but not badly enough to make him throw his toys out of the pram.
Ronaldo was desperate to play for Real Madrid. He never threw his toys out of the pram though. Some players do act professional.

At this point i'd wish the club just came out and said "due to Covid we can't spend 100m, will revisit in January once the finances become clearer"

All the "he's still our prime target and we remain hopeful" is just leading us on and it'll only cause more frustration come the end of the window.

Well, except for agreeing with Sepp Blatter who compared your club to modern day slave owner...

This is a oft repeated point here and it has some validity. But the counter point is, without significantly strengthening our squad, we will likely be in a battle for top 4 and if we miss out on CL, the financial implications of that will be equally severe especially as we are not gonna be getting Matchday revenue for a year as well. To lose CL and quite a bit of sponsorship money isn't something that's gonna help our finances either.

Both points do make sense and at this point we are caught in between a rock and a hard place. Ultimately the blame has to be laid at the feet of the scouting and negotiating department, because we really ought to have lined up better alternatives than the likes of Perisic and Costa.

I disagree with this. Willian would have been a perfect stop gap player that wouldn't have impacted our ability to get Sancho in a future window.

We would have known very early on if this deal was financially viable. Despite what people think Bruno and VDB have completed our 'summer' spending based on average net spend.

He probably wanted a long term contract and high wages.

We can’t stock pile players with mega wages - we’ve hopefully learned our lesson with that one

Bruno & VDB were our summer signing totalling our average net spend.

The Sancho signing would be above and beyond what we should be expected to spend in my opinion, it really would be a signing that slows down any future spend. Isn't that the truth about the last time we made CL; the seasons before we had signed Pogba/Lukaku which ultimately put a cap on our spending in future windows?

The club really will be having to 'find' this money. In such a turbulent economic period they are right to try everything to get a bettered structured deal.

This signing together with Covid could prevent future spending for 2/3 windows.

His age means he might well be worth that upfront investment.

P.s. I still think we get him. Only because other teams have invested strongly.

Good morning Mr Woodward, hope you are well on this lovely Friday morning :D

Timing was wrong. We would have had to buy him before we made a decision on Sancho. Anyway he wanted a three year contract, which would have been a mistake.

Im not going to complain if sancho doesnt happen as Dortmund wont budge from their asking price and we wont pay it. Fair enough. At least have a stop gap year long loan lined up. Right now i dont care whether its Perisic, Douglas Costa, Dembele or Sarr. Just bring someone in. The fixture list is so cramped that we need quality to replace quality. Not bodies to to replace quality.

It's not buying a Twix though is it ? It's over a hundred million pounds in a financial environment that is changing rapidly. Financial forecasting at the minute is very difficult to do, with assumptions changing every day.

If (and it's a big if I agree) , the club is still working on the transfer with this in mind and actively negotiating behind the scenes, then I'm happy with that and happy to be patient even though it is taking forever.
I’m not gonna claim I know anything about finance, there’s probably a very good reason besides the owners being tight that this isn’t getting done. But when the owners were tight even before the pandemic, it’s hard not to see that as a key factor.
