people here talks about his set pieces ability, james milner-lite, etc but those are not qualities we need right now, are they? what we want for our new midfielder is the ability to retain the ball and make passes.

I think we need that as well. Our team lacks workrate, attitude and leadership, JWP offering in addition set pieces, crossing and some versatility as well. He would be our best and most consistent midfielder and a useful squad addition in the grand scheme of things, considering his ability to pass is good as well. This is not a case of adding 3-4 players and being good to go, we probably need to exchange half the squad in the next 3 years.

We need more than one midfielder. A CM and DM is a must this summer.

Since everyone knws we are after two high energy central medfielders this summer i guess we will be linked to alot of CMs. It inevitable as our scouts will be watching players. Murtoughs people will be speaking to agents to find out if a player has any interest, what he would want as a package etc. Standard football stuff. Just because we looked at him doesnt mean we are going to sign him.

If this is the sort of player we'd consider signing then we won't be back to winning titles anytime soon.

He's in the top five chances created on the PL. Above Saka and he's playing in a poor Southampton team!

Honestly, I'm on this train and will not rest until we sign him. Great player, massively underrated, works hard, good on the ball, great set pieces (we didn't score for 140 corners btw), PL proven and he is definitely ready for a step up.

Now is he the player to turn the entire team around? No. Would he be a great squad player who offer solidity in midfield where we are losing two heads (Matic and Pogba)? Absolutely

You don't go for a player like him after signing a long-term contract, he will cost far more than his level indicates.

We can produce half decent player from our youth system why go out to purchase one like buying Telles for B. Williams or DVB for Lingard or D. James for Elanga.
This guy would only block James Garner path into the first team without being significantly better on the long run.

He'd have a much bigger impact than Garner would next season. I do agree in general though, his price be wouldn't be worth it in the long run and not a big enough upgrade in the short term.

Would be very surprised to see him move this summer. Just recently got a new contract, like many mentioned. Also, he´s the Southampton captain now ain´t he? Good player, by all means, but not gonna happen.

talking of the youngsters, does anyone know if any TV channel is showing the Youth Cup Final? I can only find some weird mention of BBC Scotland which makes no sense
I was certain i read somewhere that it was going to be broadcast on MUTV (i even put it in my calendar reminder). Can´t find it in a search though, but i suggest you check MUTV closer to the game.

EDIT: I also realised i had it in my calendar on April 30th, which is weird, considering the final is penned for May 11th. Might have been rescheduled though? clue

We don’t need ward prowse if garner is just as good at set pieces, waste of money in my opinion, also I heard city are after him so it’s a no brainer who he’d choose… although at city he’s more then likely going to be sitting on the bench.

He's amazing at free kicks, I'd dare to call him the world's best.

But besides that he's doesn't really excels at anything else.

If he was 22 or so he'd be interesting. But as it is with basically no prospect of real improvement I don't see him as good enough.

The set piece stuff is nice, but not actually a reason to buy him. I think you have to put that in the bonus category because it is his midfield play that will define whether he's successful at a bigger club.

He gives the ball away plenty so I've no idea why the OP mentions finding team mates, Fred finds them at a far better rate and we bemoan his passing! Also, he's not actually as much of a workhorse as players like Phillips, if that's the plan. I don't really see what we're getting that you can hang your hat on except corners.

In conclusion this place is getting a bit desperate. We do need to identify value, but that doesn't mean plucking out any old solid PL player that's at an average side.

I don't mind to have any good midfield passer in our team, but shouldn't we give more chance to our own Garner instead? He is a good passer too, and defensively solid.

James, 27 (PL)
9 goal 5 assists
Key Pass: 2.1
Pass: 50.3/86%
Cross: 2.2
Tackle: 1.2
Intercept: 1.1
Avg rating: 7.07

Garner, 21 (Championship)
4 goals 8 assists
Key pass: 2.1
Pass: 33.6/80.8%
Cross: 1.6
Tackle: 1.8
Intercept: 1.4
Avg rating: 7.12

If he had a brazilian name everyone would want him. He is good enough for the next step. Would really like us to get him

There's a very real anti English agenda on this forum by many so it comes as no surprise to me that people don't want JWP.

I wouldn't mind him but the only issue is his price tag would put me off rather than his ability.

so not on proper telly then. that's a shame

We worry about the money because it is a limited resource and money used in one area is not available to strengthen other areas.
yes but this has been going on for years, including the times when we could pretty much afford anyone

But surely the Charlie Adam comparison makes more sense as a big premier league team actually took a gamble on him, unlike Juninho who stayed at Lyon throughout his prime…
We're looking at player qualities here.

The insinuation that he's Charlie Adam is just a daft and lazy one. He was rightly called out for it.

But the original poster didn’t necessarily say he was talking about player qualities when comparing him to Charlie Adam. If we’re talking about player qualities, neither Adam or Juninho make much sense. At least with Adam you can see the similarity in terms of making a step up at a similar age from a lower premier league team.

He said he'd be like an Adam signing, to insinuate that he'd flop for us like Adam did for Liverpool. He could have been a Juninho signing who on hindsight would've been a snip for a top club.
Maybe the poster can clarify themselves.

Lots of talk that we (redcafe fans) would be interested if his name was Wardinho Prowselinho... At least he wouldn't cost a leg and an arm if his name was that!

Watching him for England recently, he seemed more occupied by combing his hair to one side and slapping it down with his hand than playing football. I'd demand a better haircut if we bought him.

People said the same thing about Liverpool when they signed Henderson. Whether we want to accept it or not, these kinds of players are game changers. When was the last time we had a set-piece specialist? He also gets about a lot and has made life hard for our soft midfield on many occasions. It's a solid signing you hope can kick on and give 20% more with a move to United.

What's the obsession with signing midtable players for exorbitant fees? This is how we ended up with Wan-Bissaka and Maguire. Hard pass.
