Is this normal for club to make that much of an issue when football people wants a move? They are serious considering to pay someone for 12 months gardening? Or is it just journalist bunch of usual crap?

If he has gardening leave in his contract then just resigning doesn’t get around it.

Looks like we're pissing off everyone. I like it.

Nothing has changed then.
United are evolving. From 2013-now we've been The Smiths, politely asking people to move out of the way so we can squeeze past, eating lettuce, shit like that. Now we're back to being Ian Brown, tanked up on enough chemicals to kill a horse, barging through people without saying a word, wearing sunglasses indoors, waving our arms about and knocking over peoples' pints. Not giving a single shite who complains. We're Man United, we'll do what we want.

We'll still struggle for fifth or sixth next season but at least we'll do it in style.

As far as I understand, and I might be very wrong, a director of football oversees the playing department. They help identify transfers (or at some clubs in extreme circumstances may even have complete control over them), they negotiate transfers and player contracts. That kind of thing. They'll meet with scouts, the manager and CEO or owners.

Technical directors do the same for non-playing staff. Identifying changes needed to the scouting department, medical team, data analysis department, nutritionists, in some cases coaches. They'll meet with the chief scout, head physio, lead sports science guys etc as well talking things through with the manager and perhaps the Dof too to implement changes within all these non-playing departments. They're ultimately the boss of most of the non-playing staff.

In some cases you could even have a first team, reserve team and academy technical director all as separate jobs.
Yeah and important to note that there will be a lot of crossover and a lot of collaboration needed between the two roles.

Ashworth - Players
Wilcox - Staff
Berrada - Commercial and big boss man

Unfortunately it isnt, 3 months would go to "middle management" in most businesses of a reasonable size. 6 months notice is fairly standard and 12 months for a director is fairly normal where going to a competitor.
If going to a competitor, then anti competitiveness clauses in his contract of employment should cover it.

It's unfair contract terms to insist he can't work elsewhere for 12 months, or must work 12 months notice.

Wilcox is great news. Very few players can whip a left footed cross in quite like him.

"Hardly any loyalty in football" says the Southampton fan about a guy who's been in the job for 15 months. There is close to zero loyalty in football mate. Has been for a long time. About the only thing you can expect is a youth player not running out their contract to join a direct rival. That's about it. Rest is about the money and minuscule about titles and European football.

Pogba went through our youth system and we only received token compensation, if anything, for him. Then we had pay £90M, or whatever, to buy him back.

Football employment is totally fecked up and doesn't follow the normal conventions of employment laws.

How are we trying to hijack their bid, when news of our interest broke first?
We’re always made to look like the second choice/option. If he rejected them to join us it would be ‘Liverpool pulled out’

So either we've brought him in, or we've failed and he's gone to Liverpool.
Brilliant.

Love that he thinks he can just resign to get out of it.
He obviously doesn’t think that, he’s doing it to force Southampton’s hand, and if they don’t budge then he’s free to join in 12 months.

it might be unfair but it’s not uncommon and exactly why gardening leave provisions exist, Wilcox will be paid in full for the duration of gardening leave too.

Can someone tell me what should i feel about this?
Southampton doesn't look like a well run club.

Is he one of the best candidates for this position?

The whole things bizarre. We’re supposedly trying to hijack Liverpools bid to sign him yet haven’t heard a peep from the media about Liverpools interest until now, even though we first got linked with him weeks now. Also Liverpool offer to pay up his years salary and it gets accepted yet Southampton are demanding more from us? Either Southampton are just cnuts or this isn’t adding up.

Yeah and that's fair enough. He was offered a contract but left to play more. He didn't leave to join Liverpool or City or something. He left for a different league. He was impatient and annoyed and that was it. I don't have any problem with any player leaving when their contract is up.

The fee is 5% of the transfer fee divided to clubs for the years the player trained between 12-21 or 0.5% each so we got about 2m back for the 90m we payed and some peanuts when he left for free.

He's only been director of football there since the summer. He did a great job leading City's academy for years and is clearly highly rated by Berrada.

Even if he comes here I imagine he will have a long notice period. Can't be as easy as just walking off if clubs need to agree a fee otherwise

So one year of salary is fine for Southampton when it is from Liverpool but not good enough when we do it?
This is the same Southampton who refused to speak to United about Bale but then sold him to Spurs?!

They’re clearly a bunch of weirdos
