I was the first to want murtough out. It was evident to me from day 1 that Fletcher and him were merely placeholders in roles, the Glazers created out of pure supporters pressure. Fletcher did his best in his very restricted role whose role pale in comparison to what other technical directors did. Murtough on the other hand held a more senior which meant that his role , if done properly, had to clash with the immense power the CEO was given by the Glazers. There's no way the Glazers would have clipped their favourite dove's wings (ie woodward). Thus by accepting the role (Dofs from the outside refused it) Murtough had shown that he is a company man, the sort of useful idiot the Glazers love and reward. Let us not forget that Woodward is the only non Glazer who was allowed to own Class B shares. Murtough is what the athletic called....his fixer

Thus I can see a scenario were the Glazers would want murtough in a role as close to the football side as ineos would allow it to serve as their eyes and their ears. Let us not forget that the Glazers are still the majority shareholders. Sure they never really care about the football side but there's a huge difference between neglecting it and totally losing control of it.

He was always utterly unqualified. Will struggle to get another job at DOF level once he is sacked

As useless as a knitted condom. He's every bit as incompetent and responsible for the mess that we're in as Woodward is.

His ‘win or lose we’re on the booze’ lads’ trip to Barcelona with Dickie Arnold will go down as one of the great United grifts.

I wonder why we haven't heard much recently about Murtough going, which would still be a big story despite what seems to be an inevitability. United are clearly seeking out his replacement.

I've blanked most of it out, was that when they went to try to sign Frenkie De Jong?

Wonder how many people read the - i'll call it for what it was here - Hit piece published on him by the Athletic?

remember when bellingham visited Carrington and met with SAF? Well, apparently "met with SAF" was a good description: they met, shook hands, then Murtough whisked Bellingham and his camp away and they never saw SAF again

I expect he will be in position until Ashworth starts work, so I wouldn’t expect any announcement about Murtough until the end of the season. If we have to wait for DA beyond that it would be a disaster to be without a DoF. I think vets are being hedged at this point!

The guy was appointed by Woodward, was at the club for several years and a very active participant in a failed regime. Over here everyone deserves a chance. Hope Ratcliffe considers me for the job. Reckon I too deserve a go.

We are very openly pursuing Dan Ashworth as DOF while Murtough is still the DOF? Am I missing something here? Has Murtough resigned or being sacked?

Where Erik was reportedly reporting to Arnold, the new regime are most likely using Murtough in his proper role as part of the new structure until the time comes for him to be replaced with Ashworth. The media have suggested Murtough will take on a reduced role at that point. Will depend ultimately on what the club decide.

i have heard that story before and IIRC it was proven bullshit
If you actually take it into context it shines Murtough in a good light. Its not the gotcha moment some fans with a vendetta would like to believe it is.

This is how I interpreted it. The deal was on the table, the club had to ring by 9am. At this point it would have been Judge or Woodward making the call. They probably weren't that desperate considering the player wasn't a name by this point. Tommy kept nagging the club, and Murtough came in to try and rescue the deal but it was too late.

At the end of the day in 2018 it was not Murtoughs call to make, but he ended up being the guy that did therefore going above and beyond his position at the time.

That's if the story has any truth to it of course.

What the bloody hell is this ?

Didn't Murtough gave an ultimatum to Woodward that he won't appoint him to DOF, so he'll feck off to Inter Miami ? Murtough is the last person to talk

Well it worked didn't it? He knew Woodward was a clueless muppet.

Barcelona needs money so I could imagine they invite Murtough in and see if Man Utd still interest in De Jong or Araujo or Raphinha , then leak it to the media to stir the market up

When I was a kid, we used to talk about ‘gossip girls’ because we had this idea that gossiping and rumourmongering was typical girl stuff. We were always wrong, of course, and this thread really is brimmimg with the evidence to the point of drowning.

Post after post of people stating once ludicrous rumours as unquestionable fact. As if the five in depth articles ever written by paid journalists about Murtough’s actual doings isn’t enough to form an impression about the truth of him (it isn’t), grown up lads sit and chatter over the picket fence or the laptop about pure fantasy to make themselves sound interesting or knowledgeable, or they just don’t have a clue that someone saying something doesn’t mean it’s true.

Really all we know about Murtaugh, is that he has been promoted a whole lot, being talked up a lot by people inside football, and now he’s being demoted from one of the highest positions in world football. That’s more or less it, the rest is gossip.

The fact he is still involved in anyway after spending over half a billion pounds to build a mid table team is just insane

I would keep him at the Academy recruitment. He did a good job there

He must have spoken a lot of stuffs to the point where the club seems to think they have to sympathize with him

Finally getting that Jude Bellingham deal done it seems!
He's just heard about this talented young midfielder at Birmingham City. He did think it a bit odd that he seems to have an apartment in Madrid but he's not one to miss an opportunity

With all due respect to this guy his recruitment was even more manager dependent than clueless Woodward. But with twice the PR briefings.

Academy director Nick Cox is mostly responsible for that. He only gave his final approval, I doubt he was involved in the negotiations at all for the likes of Garnacho.

Pretty sure he was very involved. He's the one who set up the scouting system that allowed us to nab Garnacho when his contract situation was uneasy. And he went over to Spain for talks and had to quarantine after. They all worked together on it for people like Garnacho, Jurado, Fernandez. That was Murtough and his crew being proactive and smart. We got a lot of talent for cheap with one working out to be Man Utd level and Fernandez being able to be sold on for a good fee.

Not that that defends his role in the Ten Hag situation.

That was one thing we were reliably good at. Jumping in when 16 year olds were about to turn pro at other teams. It’s almost been a very profitable tactic for us especially if Pogba had worked out first time around. There’s no doubting we can spot good players at that level. It’s an approach I hope to see more of again now we have INEOS clubs in the European leagues. You really can make a big profit on those players if you loan them aggressively and with a solid development plan between 18-21. Most just want to play professional games and start making their name in the game instead of sitting for years in our youth setup.

It’s Brexit that’s hindering us, we have to wait until they’re 18 now so we can’t get talents like Garnacho, Pogba and Alvaro like we could a few years ago.

Any role he has now is going to be in such a reduced capacity that I don’t think it really matters whether he stays or goes.
