Jose Mourinho | Spurs manager

At every club he's been at since 2002, Mourinho has won trophies. Will he win one at Spurs?

Quote? Footage?

It was on national tv after the Belgium game, will have to look for footage.

quote: "I also just got the news, but we will see what will happen", Alderweireld said. "That sometimes happens in football. Sometimes a trainer comes and sometimes he stays. We have achieved great things together, but I think it's time for something else."

Weirdest appointment I have ever seen. Spurs might be in need of a massive rebuild next few seasons and Jose won't have a checkbook like previous clubs.

I may be optimistic here but could he possibly stay now?

We all thought he'd change his ways for us, we all thought it was his dream job so it made sense. We all know how it went. To think he'll change for Spurs is kind of daft to me. He'll do what he does.

Poch, a team like ours shouldn't be getting beaten 7-1, even by Munich and the loss to Colchester, simply a shambles.

That's a one off freak incident. The first 45 mins of that match certainly didn't look like a team that had downed tools.

Levy was and is the biggest problem with your squad. Half your side don't want to be underpaid, are running their contracts out and demotivated to perform as a result.

It might be an option I think. It was widely reported yesterday on Belgian tv that Poch lost the dressing room a while ago. 3 important players (Alderweireld, Vertonghen and Eriksen) refusing to sign a new deal was a pretty good indication.

The second half did, and most of this season too. Players saying the training methods weren't to there liking in the media isn't a good thing.

I don't see this, how has he been made the scape goat? He has been under performing for all of this season, never mind last season.

That's your opinion mate.

I don't think Poch is entirely at fault for Spurs' fall from grace this season. It's a combination of things, for me, such as Levy creating discontent among the squad through his refusal to pay his players their market worth or reluctance to grant them a release clause in their contracts (among other stipulations) resulting in them feeling trapped and no longer wishing to perform to the best of their ability.

According to The Athletic, the players had begun to hate life under Poch.

Was looking at some quotes from some of your players this morning, from the bits I read they seemed respectful rather than devastated he was gone.

Again that's your opinion, from Toby's remarks and the stories about training it seems the players weren't happy. Toby had a release clause?

Will be interesting to see how this turns out. Spurs have, overall, a very settled team, not much of a surprise that they're a bit empty after the season they had last year and losing the CL final. The conditions are very much there for Mourinho to succeed, so we'll soon see if he's lost it or not.

He will be great for Spurs. Now he can play the underdog role that suit him so much without any blame about history or expectations.

He will moan like never before.

Yeah that's what I get from it, again I loved Poch but he wasn't without his issues, Saturday will tell us a lot about how the players react especially given its a derby game that West Ham are always up for.

I don't think it's just an opinion. It's clear as day that players have been running down their contracts because they're miffed at not being paid their worth with some players more obvious about their displeasure than others (like Rose). Poch has been continually disabled from freshening up his squad on top - it's rare to go from sustained top 4 places season on season, then being Champions League finalists to obscurity all of a sudden. There is a bigger problem at hand and something like this has been expected for a while. Poch if anything deserves credit for maximising it for this long.

Agree with this.

Normally you’d expect a new manager bounce and a possible shellacking if the players have been unhappy and under the cosh. It’s Jose though, so enjoy your 1-0, and buckle in for plenty more :wenger:.

He fought tooth and nail to have his demands met, but he still wanted out of the club after that, did he not?

This situation stinks of the modern-day footballer being shielded from blame whilst the manager gets thrown to the wolves.

I can't help but feel for Poch in all of this.

The first thing I thought when I saw him holding Spurs jersey: 'is he really that desperate?'

Again I like Poch, but it was time for him to go. Yeah the modern day footballer do get quite the free ride in situations like this. Toby apparently agreed to a new deal then backed out and that pissed Poch off (all rumour), the deal was always n the table at apparently £140,000 / week. that was about 2 seasons ago I think.

More than desperate. This is his last chance to resurrect his career and he will fail miserably.

I feel bad for Tottenham fans. They should not be fooled by the words from the Mourinho cult. He is a busted flush and won't be able to compete.

I couldn't agree more.

Levy has to look at himself here.

This will only work if Spurs bend to Mourinho's will. If Levy has other ideas as to how Spurs should play or the direction of the team then there will be fireworks.

Who are these Jose type players? Other than the odd one or two the majority aren’t winners nor are they suited to his defensive approach.
You can see a lot of tactical parallels between this current Spurs squad and previously successful sides he has operated. Spurs owe much of their performance level to a solid defence with experienced top-class centre-halves (best defensive record in the league in 15/16 and 16/17, 3rd since then), which is similar to the part of the team where his Porto, Chelsea (both times) and Inter sides were strong. He also has the right type of midfielders who can graft and be positionally disciplined which has been a hallmark of almost all of his sides. Spurs defence and midfield are well drilled to play compactly, which is something he values highly. He has forwards that are strong in transitions and on the counter, Son and Ali being typical examples, which replicates some of the counter-attacking punch of all of his sides through the 2000s and early 2010s. And finally a centre-forward that can score 30 goals a season and hold the ball up. I'm struggling to think of another elite striker, apart from perhaps Lewandowski and Cavani, who would be a comparable or better fit in that regard.

Whether Mourinho has passed his best and is yesterday's man is a different question, but I can see the fit on the park at Spurs suiting him much more than at United.

Believe me, I'm trying not to be too precious but it's disappointing that two clubs with traditions of flair & attacking football should be so unromantic and treacherous that they recruited Mourinho.

Bloody hell, give him a chance - he hasn't even hung his legendary coat up yet.

Especially after seeing how it went for us. Its sad really, but it'll certainly put Spurs fans back in their box once the Jose express train has run through the club.

The only trophy Jose will win with Spurs is the League cup.

And he will go down as a Spurs legend with that.

Yes he will ruffle feathers, the fans might not like the playing style and he almost certainly won't be there in 2 and a half years.

But the chances are by then he will have won them something, even if it's just an FA Cup to get the monkey off their back.[/QUOTE]

Here’s the thing, yes there is a good possibility that Jose will win something in his first year or two at the club and in all likelihood it will be Carabao or FA cup success. This success comes at a price though - replacing the young talent with established 30+ year olds and flowing, attacking football with defensive dreary tactics - imagine Spurs playing a 6-3-1 formation. I can easily see the likes of Winks, Alli (C that he is), Son, Eriksen all taking a back seat and eventually wanting to leave the club.

Add to that the chance that very few of the emerging talent in the youth setup will be given chances and the recipe spells for disaster.

Aye, sad isn't it.

I don't see why Spurs didn't go for Allegri.

Agreed, good post.

Levy has lost the plot. This is going to end badly. However Levy won't be slow to admit he had a mistake.

Definitely didnt see this coming.

Lucky for him he has a good crop of players to start with and may be able to help them overcome their mental issues.

But Mourinho+Levy? cant see this going past 1.5yrs

This could actually turn out really well.. Spurs have a better squad than us, he'll be living in London with his family, had good time out..

I'd Jose has the fire in his belly and doesn't self implode within 3 years it could be interesting, Spurs imo have the personel to play how Jose's Madrid team played
