He was better than what they had but he didn't stand out at all and Porto fans weren't unhappy to see him leave. Maybe I'm being harsh but it's surreal to me to watch him start games for a team with the defensive reputation of Atletico after having seen him being just ok at a lower level for years. Similar thoughts about Herrera too, he was good for Porto but noone thought he was good enough to make this jump and keep starting for a team like Atletico. The starting CB duo at the beginning of the season was nominally Giménez-Savic, despite Simeone briefly "experimenting" with Hermoso (in a back three in one of the earliest games) and pairing Giménez with one of the others from game to game.
After Savic fell out with injury Simeone decide to stick with Giménez-Felipe. Then Giménez also got injured, which meant regular playing time for Hermoso.
When Giménez came back in, Felipe retained his spot as he's been solid, consistent; whereas Hermoso is more erratic with higher highs and lower lows.
Clearly Simeone prefers solidity above all. We also forget that Hermoso is only 24yo, so he should still improve.
Now that Savic has also returned from injury, it'll be interesting to see who Simeone will use to partner Giménez.
In what sense do you mean that Felipe was "barely good enough for Porto"?
Correct me if I'm wrong but over his 3 seasons there he started practically every game for them in the Liga + UCL...
So clearly they didn't think so.
Felipe does have the characteristics that a coach like Simeone would like but it's still a big step down to have either him or Savic as starters imo.
