Let's talk 'keepers: who do we buy and why?

I couldn’t give a flying feck about ball playing keepers who are great with their feet, I just want a keeper who’s good with their fecking hands and can do the basics which will inspire confidence into the defence who always look shaky due to no doubt being petrified of what Onana will do next.

Vanja Milinkovic-Savic is 2.02m, experienced, and having a great season with Torino. We could probably pick him up for less than £20m. No need to spend more millions on another over hyped small keeper.
His contract is up in 2026. So he wouldn't be that expensive.

Wouldn't be averse to getting an experienced keeper on a free (Meret, Freddie Woodman and - whisper it - De Gea all out of contract) and also signing Kaua Santos from Frankfurt.

Only seen him twice and there's not much in the way of highlight videos but it's instantly striking that he's a physical freak. It's strange to say about a goalkeeper but his athleticism is off the charts. He's just noticably different to other keepers.

A huge, imposing figure with unnaturally good spring - he jumps like an NBA player - and is somehow very, very fast too.

Translated from the Brazilian legend Rogerio Ceni:

Kauã can be not just Brazil's next great goalkeeper but the World's. His physicality is like a dream, something created by science. It's not normal to be almost 200cm and move like he does. You have goalkeepers like Courtois and the Italian Donnarumma who are a wall but the sacrifice is speed and ground balls. There are cats like Ederson and Oblak but the sacrifice is aerially and in one vs one chances. With Kauã there's no sacrifice. He has it all.

Edit - videos vs Bayern and Besiktas

That Besiktas game is mad. Reminds me a bit of Neuer vs Porto in the CL for Schalke at the start of his career.

This Santos fella does look insanely promising, based on highlights alone.

He only has 1 year left on his contract as well. No doubt UEFA would be sticking their oar in about fair value but he would be pretty cheap given his contract situation.
Interesting, I didn't know that. I think as a solid no nonsense upgrade he'd be someone worth considering. Whether UEFA would kick up a fuss is another matter as you say, but if we aren't in competing European competition there should be no issue right?

City signed Savinho from their feeder club afterall.

Yea his height and agility is a rare combo. I remember very clearly when Schalke sold Neuer, they were heavily rumoured to sign Courtois and I saw some videos of his performances at Genk and even then you could see he was immensely talented because of that combination. Was so disappointed when he decided to go with Chelsea.

Kaua seems to have that as well. Don't think he's quite ready for start for a club like United (evidenced by that game against Mainz where he had not one but 3 horrible mistakes) but we can definitely do what Chelsea did with Courtois, where they secured him young and loaned him for a couple of years at Madrid where he developed into an amazing keeper.

Sign Kaua, hopefully he'll still be cheap since there isn't as much hype about him yet, send him on loan, probably in the BL.

Would also love to try for Kobel at Dortmund as a starting keeper. He's been at Dortmund for a while now and their team has only gotten worse since he joined, he would be very tempted by a move and is a top keeper (not having his best season but is understandable given how good he was before).

He won't be cheap. He is under contract until 2030, Frankfurt see him as the long term first choice to replace Trapp and they never sell cheap.

Need a PL proven one, Sels would be number one choice but don't see if leaving Forest this summer, Flekken has the most saves this season just ahead of Sels so at least we no he can actually catch a ball

Ramsdale as a cheap option because of our budget ? or more experienced like Pickford & Martinez. Let's be honest though all these would be an upgrade currently

What happen to Diego Costa? He was all the hype a few years back and we were rumoured to be interested in him before ETH decided to go with Onana.

Definitely need someone else ASAP. I just wonder how good Bayindir would be if he got a run like this person has.
Surely we have to give him a chance to find out, he should be tried at least before we buy someone else.
Bayindir should be given a run of games, he can't be any worse than Onana, there's nothing to osel and a lot to gain if he does OK

Give me a proper big keeper who can dominate the box. Someone like Courtois, Emi Martinez, Nick Pope, etc.

Diogo Costa? I think he hasn't necessarily gotten better than what people expected. But he does have only 2 more years with his contract up in 2027.

What about the Athletic Bilbao GKs? Unai Simon(27) or Julen Agirrezabala(24) I don't know much about them but I've heard some good stuff about both

What about the Madrid number 2? He was decent for them last year.

Diago Costa would be my choice, but it depends on what signings the club prioritises at the end of the season, most likely a number 9. Either way it’ll be incredibly difficult to sell Onana or Hojlund this summer.

I think we should go down the route Arsenal took with Raya.

I really don't think we need to be signing a spectacularly brilliant keeper for an eye-watering sum this summer to get a lot better. The team is no longer conceding 20 or more shots per match; they're just being let down because Onana cannot fecking stay focused.

Just sign a solid, steady keeper who you can depend on not to consistently feck up in the big moments like Onana or panic when put under pressure on the ball like De Gea. They don't need to have the shot-stopping capabilities of De Gea or the passing range of Ederson to make a huge difference to the side.

What it boils down to is that I don't think we need to be looking for a keeper who will win us matches this summer, we just need one who we can depend on not to cost us matches.

Just to add context: That Besiktas match was Santos' first start for Frankfurt.

There actually seems to be a number of good to potentially great keepers that can be gotten for fairly reasonable cost. For that reason alone it makes sense to do it now while there’s a market opportunity, I wonder if that will factor into INEOS thinking.

Vanja would be my short term pick. Physically imposing, very good stats, penalty beast. Should be reasonably priced given his contract situation.

I'd take James Trafford but as others have said, at this point there arent many out there who wouldnt feel like an upgrade.

I would avoid signing overhyped GKs like Costa (stagnated since years) or Kobel (who's really bad with the ball). Kaua Santos looks interesting but no way Frankfurt are gonna sell him for cheap. Flekken seems very reasonable. Getting him for one-two seasons and going after Verbruggen (Brighton) after that would be my ideal scenario. My alternative to Flekken would also be Milinkovic-Savic.

Fiorentinas keeper looks handy

In all seriousness, I would take fecking ramsdale at this rate

What about Jose Sa at Wolves? Wasn't he amazing last season? Haven't seen much of him this season but I don't think he would be overly expensive.

I’m with you here.

Seems a bit odd that people are apparently suddenly willing for us to sign some crap goalkeepers (Ramsdale..?) because Onana is poor?

Why not just play Bayindir if we're not bothered about the quality of the keeper we want to sign?

That would be confirming relegation.

Was just thinking that. Lad has a touch of the Uncle Albert's about him. 4 times he's been relegated in the last 5/6 years

Wouldn't mind taking the route of an experienced keeper a la VDS. Get a few years out of them would allow focus on getting the outfield to settle.

How's that Chevalier chap been getting on? Can't claim to know much (if anything) about him - outside of watching him a couple of times, but have read about him on here and in the press. Would he move and what would his estimated price be?

I guess I agree with some views here - because we're skint and have other priority areas, just try and get a free/cheap short/medium term upgrade (like Sommer to Inter) on Onana (not that difficult) and then go for a GK again in 2-3 years when hopefully we're in a better position both on and off the field.

This would be the sensible thing to do, and it is very doable.

Bigger concern is who will buy Onana from us and for how much.

What keeper has the mental fortitude for it?

Every week, even the most innocuous goals we concede will be getting Sky Sports News and Talksport deep dives with "experts" like David James tearing them apart.

Maybe just try Bayindir for a year and hope for the best. He isn't a new name and it's a player being promoted from within so there should be naturally less focus from the press instead of giving them easy "£X million pound flop keeper" headlines.

The only thing saving him is the transfer fee. Hes just too expensive to be a No. 2

Ideally he’d face some competition, drop to the bench and be fazed out over time.
