Southgate had no intention of taking him. His inclusion in the 33 man provisional squad was nothing more than a publicity stunt. Forgive and forget and all that jazz. His handling of Greenwood since day one has been appalling. Ole has treated Mason with kid gloves, unlike Southgate who threw him to the wolves. His first inclusion in the squad he did a press conference before even making his debut. He roomed with another young lad in Foden. Yes he messed up, but it's terrible, naive management. Now, he has an injury. Terribly convenient. I won't be watching any of their games this Summer.
This is a bit of an odd post. How was his handling of Greenwood wrong? Are you just annoyed because Foden got called up later on and he didn't?

With a bit of luck Maguire will miss it, it's feasible Rashford will too as he's been playing injured all season. I imagine Shaw will go, but hopefully Chilwell gets played over him after the CL final which means less exertion.

In an ideal world Bruno would miss it as well but that's unlikely to happen.
Naah, none of that is going to happen unfortunately.

I feel that Ole has handled Greenwood brilliantly. Protecting him from the press and shielding him from any possible situations that could have got him into trouble. Southgate's man management was in complete contrast and he hung him out to dry. No issues at all with Greenwood's omission and Foden's inclusion from earlier in the season. Mason started slowly, so that is fully justified. My issue is that Southgate has painted an image of 'forgive and forget', despite having no interest in bringing him to the Euro's. If you watch his press conference from last week it was obvious that he was speaking from a perspective of 'Mason is lucky to be here', rather than him being viewed as a genuine option to make the final 26.

He hasn’t really been in the team so shouldn’t come as a surprise. That’s one player I expect to really explode next season.

Very good call from him. The amount of games we've played in the past year is insane. Pretty much in 11 months, United alone has played 75 competitive matches, with 2 of those going the full 120 minutes, and then 1 friendly against Villa, and then England national team (and likely the others) have played 11 international games in that time). So essentially, that's almost 87 games worth of minutes between June 19th 2020 and May 26th 2021. Game every 3.96 days for almost a full year, and the majority of our squad has had to deal with the full load (whether they should have been rotated is another matter), but the likes of Bruno, Maguire, Rashford and Pogba especially will need an extended break and could do with skipping the Euros, though they never will. So to account for that they should probably take July and August off and come back slowly in September.
Insane numbers. Rashford and Maguire especially — both of whom are currently injured or playing through injuries!

Bold is spot on, but we just can’t afford it. Especially for Maguire and Bruno.

so we never want any of our top players to do well on the international stage?

Nah it's just this summer is a good one to skip if ever, considering the insane amount of fixtures over the past year due to the football restart last June and us running into August with the Europa League last year, and then us playing among the most amount of matches in Europe in all competitions this season (think United and City would be roughly level at the top) after a delayed start to the season... its just been a ridiculous amount of fixtures over the past year. Players like Bruno would have been in and around a match day squad for club and country for 87 games since June 19th last year. No other league is close to the premier league in amount of fixtures played since the restart, and of premier league teams, United and City have far more than anyone else due to the consistent progress to latter stages in all cup competitions and European competitions. So for us, especially the main few like Maguire, Bruno and Rashford who play every game for club and country when fit, it's an unmanageable workload and they need an extended break.

touchy.

yes I want Bruno, Maguire and Rashford to go to the Euros and star in the tournament.
Haha I wouldn't say touchy, you were just being melodramatic about my post.

Normally I'd agree with you, but this euros is gonna be horrible for the players, who have already been subject to a ridiculous schedule for the past 18 months, so the fewer we have that play the better.

:D No problem. There are a few people who always want our players not to go away with international teams. Which I do find disappointing.

I agree, that there would be benefits if they don’t go, but there are also benefits in them going. It’s no coincidence we are talking about 3 of our players with the best mentality at the club.

What did Southgate say that had him hung out to dry?

His entire actions were naive. Throwing him into an England press conference before making his debut. You have to remember that he wasn't even doing any interviews or press conferences with United at the time. Then allowing him to room with another youngster. Yes Greenwood made a mistake, but it's asking for trouble and comes across as careless. Then there is no defence of his player whatsoever and no accountability for his own part in it. Banished from the squad, then recalled as part of the 33, but with zero intention to actually bring him to the Euro's. A token gesture.

This is a bit weird. Greenwood should hold accountability for his own mistakes and the same goes with Foden. Blaming the manager because they were friends sharing a room is a bit of a stretch. I don't think there was much in the way of offering him to be in the press conference.

When you say "then there is no defence" I am not sure what you're thinking. His actions were indefensible and he deserved being banished. The initial squad of 33 is minor, if Southgate really wanted to hang him to try he could have left him out of that cut too, and then we can all be up in arms on how he couldn't even make an extended squad

I get the impression from your posts you aren’t a massive greenwood fan. Any reason why?

Of course Greenwood is accountable. However, it's naive of the management team to have two young lads together. As for the press conference, Ole had done a terrific job of protecting him only for Southgate to shove him straight in front of the media at the very first opportunity.

Indefensible or not, I'm used to a manager defending his players, or at least being a bit more diplomatic. Though I'm thinking back to Fergie and clearly holding Southgate to an unrealistic standard. However, the whole episode left me in no doubt about his poor man management skills. Just to add, it was convenient for Southgate to have him in the 33. It allowed him the opportunity to show us that everything is forgotten, without actually having to take him.

I expected Martial to do so this season but here we go. I am sure Greenwood is the real deal but you can never know with these things.

Greenwood is quite a bit younger than Rashford and is also less likely to be involved. It makes sense why Rashford wouldnt do the same.

Can't say it's a bad decision.

Considering the wide options available, Sterling, Sancho, Grealish or Rashford who are all injured or out of form, he would have been a good option. However, he's still growing in his body and a full summer's rest would be very beneficial.

You only have to look at Owen and Rooney to err on the side of caution.

England had him in press conferences answering questions about Maguire's arrest. There's a reason why United have protected him and kept him away from the media as much as possible. Southgate threw him under the bus.
The poster said Southgate treated him badly after the iceland incident. What exactly did Southgate do after the Iceland incident?

I thought it was a good news when he’s no longer in the squad. I hate it when our players are in the international team, I care less about international. The best part is that this seems to be a man management from Ole and Mason’s family and Mason understood. They definitely told him not to rush things and that’s why Mason chose to withdrew.

Him and Foden got the same treatment from Southgate but only Greenwoods get mentioned, I think this is one of that things that gets mentioned so often that eventually it becomes a truth.

Where are Mbappe and Neymar on this list?
These lists assign a lot of value to being young, English, playing in the PL and having a long contract. Mbappe's contract runs down in a year and plays in France. Neymar is older, plays in France, and maybe hadnt extended his contract yet.

Still exciting to see 3 United players in the list and it's probably 4 as soon as Sancho signs.
