He’s 25. Still a few years before he enters prime CB age, and as others have said, the Yoro De Ligt Heaven combination has the hallmarks of a fantastic defensive line, they just need a goalkeeper they can trust behind them.

Huge fan of Matthijs. Impressive performance from him and that block shows his quality.

--- Heaven ------- De Ligt ---------- Yoro ---

That's a solid back line for years to come with plenty room to grow. Exciting times ahead.

He was the most exciting transfer of the Summer for me, and he deserve the praise he's getting. One of the few true leaders we have, and he is one warrior for us.

The most mental fact is the guy is 25.... we are nowhere near seeing his peak.

Given where he was at 19, he may well have ‘peaked’.

He’s been a good signing though, and I’m happy he’s here. He’s steadily improved throughout the season.

The only thing I worry about is his best performances come on the side of a 3. I’d really love him to excel in the centre more as I could see Yoro and Heaven becoming great covering the spaces on the outside.
Yoro wasn't that great at RCB, maybe he is more suited to central position.
Anyway, I hope that we have CB positions sorted for next season with De Ligt, Yoro, Heaven, Mazraoui, Martinez as 5 starting options for three positons. Evans, Lindelof and one of Maguire/Shaw should be moved on.

Whilst I do like to have modern defenders, when you have a back 3, having one of the CB's who loves defending is imperative. The thing is, he is clearly a CCB in this system. Once we have Yoro, Mazroui, Licha, Heaven all available, I am sure he will start in the middle and we will look alot more dynamic.

I still have some hope for Shaw as well as a LCB. I don't think we need to sign another CB this summer, especially with Maguire also there. Evans and Lindelof should not be here next season.

Though our injury luck with CB's is terrible.

Evans and Lindelof contract expires this summer so they will definitely be gone, which leaves a space for another CB.

We will have Yoro, De Ligt, Maguire, Licha and Heaven as CB options, add to that Mazroui, that is not bad options if they can stay fit.

It will depend on how much money we have to spend.

Shaw is done with us and should be swung out of the door bollock first

We can't get rid of him because of his wages, and he's still good whenever fit. Think we should use him whenever fit, but not rely on him. We don't have to, with the other options we have.

I'd rather we invest in a striker, RWB and potentially goalkeeper. Though I haven't given up on Onana personally.

Im not convinced that Martinez will be anything but prone to constant injuries from here on in. I said the same in the summer and surprise surprise..

Yep, Onana gives me nightmares.

I find it quite unreal that he's playing for us, especially in the mess we have been in the past few years. He's quality. I wish he was a bit better on the ball, and possibly a bit quicker but he's a top defender and has been for years.

Notions that he's failed for Bayern/Juventus were completely wide off the mark. The main issue is that his wages has been very high since he's left Ajax and financially it didnt make sense for those teams to keep him on. Juventus did want to renew, but he didnt so it was better to sell him whilst they could get a good fee for him.

I saw him against Arsenal in CL last year, and he looked no worse than Saliba and Gabriel that some worship on here. He's class, poor for the NT though.

Probably been our best cb this season. Most reliable aswell. Funny because when we was signing him people was doubting his injury record.

He's not very good on the ball, but when playing centrally in a back three with the likes of Martinez, Heaven, Mazraoui, and Yoro beside him, it doesn't matter all that much. Happy to have him - great defender.

My Observation of him during the course of the season is that he plays well when he's NOT partnering Maguire. This was my hunch based on eye test so i ran a quick search with the AI , asking it to list down the win % this season for games De Ligt started with Maguire vice versa. With De Ligt partnering Maguire P12 W3 L4 D5 (25% win) vs P11 W4 L2 D5 (36.3% win). Not as wide as difference i expected, but i still think my eye test was correct.

Everyone looks worse when they partner Maguire.

Wonder why.

Oh it was everything.

Injury record

Adaptability

Not favoured by Tuchel (feel like this was false)

Benched by Dier (fully made up)

Correlating him moving in from Juve and Bayern as some sort of red flag at 25, without applying any context at all.

^ Scholes in particular would rest his feeble case on the last two points.

I would say, Striker, CM, 10 and keeper are crucial this summer. We are getting away with it at the moment playing Zirkzee and Eriksen in the 10.

We need players that are quite physical in that area, Amad and Garnacho are our only options at the moment,.

Forgot CM, striker and CM are the priorities I'd say.

10 we have Bruno, Amad, Mount, Garnacho, Zirkzee that can play there. If we can find another good player there, fine. But don't think we have the funds to strengthen all 4 positions.

I know we've got plenty of injuries but the options we have for those 3x CB spots have a lot of promise in regards to both depth and future potential.

RCB: Yoro and Mazraoui
CB: De Ligt and Maguire
LCB: Martinez and Heaven

We probably should look at another CB for depth given the injury records of the above, or potentially promote Kukoni, Ngwashi etc.

I don't think this is correct - given the total here is P23, I'm assuming this is the 23 PL games De Ligt has started - so are you saying of those games the split between those he's started with Maguire and those without? They have only started 9 PL games together.

What you also have to consider is that if Maguire plays, he’s always the CCB. I think it’s fair to say that De Ligt has been better as the CCB than in the other two positions. So be careful about causation.

We shouldn't be playing de Ligt and Maguire. It should be an either/or. I wouldn't have taken up the one year option for Maguire and allowed him to walk for free.

That's a fair point. Yes, i guess both prefers the same position and gets on way of each other.

Yes , i'm carrying the same opinion too. They step on each other too much.
