Well there isn't a lot of places possession movies can go is there? At some point you need to strap them to a bed and shout Jesus stuff at them until the demon comes out, or doesn't, and they die instead.

Well, certain things needs to be in place though.

- emotional connection to the victims of the possession
- history and background
- pacing of the story
- the buildup of the tension

and more. Best example I've seen is "The Exorcist" season 1. It is for me the benchmark of all possession related entertainment. The best overall in horror is probably the original "Rosemary's baby".
