Mark Waugh: Batting Average of 39.76 and strike rate of 77.22, 13 Hundreds and 44 Fifties in the 90s. Bowling Average of 32.98 and economy rate of 4.75 in the 90s.
The classy Australian batsman has got 13 ODI centuries in the 90s which is only second to Sachin Tendulkar and Saeed Anwar, and is the third highest run getter in the 90s after Tendulkar and Azharuddin. He’s guaranteed to get me off to a great start. He’s also a very good bowler who’ll be one of my options for the fifth bowling spot, and an excellent fielder.

Neil Johnson: Batting Average of 37.58 and 74.14. 4 Hundreds and 6 Fifties in 30 matches in the 90s. Bowling Average of 34.62, economy rate of 4.96 in the 90s.
He’s an all rounder and a brilliant batsman who got 3 man of the match awards in the 1999 World Cup, and also scored 2 hundreds against the Aussies in 1999. So he’s obviously very capable against the very best. He was also a very good fast bowler and will be one of my 5th bowling options (depending on the conditions).

Graeme Hick: Batting Average of 38.94 and strike rate of 75.22 in the 90s.5 Hundreds and 22 Fifties.
A brilliant batsman and an occasional off break bowler with a 5 wicket haul to his name. Add to that he’s also a brilliant slip fielder.

Mohammad Azhuruddin (C): Batting Average of 39.87 and strike rate of 76.66 in the 90s. 5 Hundreds and 50 Fifties to his name in the 90s.
He’s the second highest run scorer in the 90s after Sachin Tendulkar. He’s another brilliant fielder in my team who can field either at slip or in the covers.

Ijaz Ahmed: Average of 36.61 and strike rate of 79.82 in the 90s. 9 Hundreds and 28 Fifties in the 90s.
Only 5 other batsmen have got more centuries in the 90s than Ijaz Ahmed, and his high strike rate shows his attacking play. He’s also believed by many to be the best fielder to ever play for Pakistan – and another asset to my fielding side.

Ajay Jadeja: Average of 37.36 and strike rate of 69.85 in the 90s. 6 Hundreds and 28 Fifties in the 90s.
Don’t be fooled by his late 60s strike rate – he’s the batsman responsible for accelerating my team’s innings towards the end like he did against Pakistan in India’s win in the 1996 world cup where he scored 45 or 25 balls. Naturally athletic he’ll again reinforce my fielding unit.

Ridley Jacobs (WK): Batting average of 22 and Strike rate of 60.49. 4 Fifties to his name in the 90s.
He’s in my team as my wicket keeper and he was a brilliant one at that. He’s got the highest dismal per innings rate of any wicket keeper in the 90s with over 50 dismissals.

Chris Pringle: Bowling average of 23.87 and economy rate of 4.45, strike rate of 32.1. 103 wickets in 64 matches, and two 4 wicket hauls and one 5 wicket haul. Specialist ODI bowler with a brilliant bowling average.

Curtly Ambrose: Bowling average of 25.85 and economy rate of 3.48, strike rate of 44.5. 160 wickets in 135 matches, with three 4 wicket hauls and two 5 wicket hauls.
This is possibly the most intimidating bowler to have ever played cricket which is reflected in that economy rate. The fear and respect batsman had for him made them content to see out his overs.

Saqlain Mushtaq: Bowling Average of 19.41, economy rate of 4.22 and strike rate of 27.5. 210 wickets in 111 matches with nine 9 wicket hauls, and five 5 wicket hauls.
He was also a brilliant inner circle fielder, with an extremely safe pair of hands. IMO he was the best ODI spinner of the 90s and the inventor of the doosra. He’ll regularly take wickets for me in the middle overs, and was also an excellent death bowler due to his natural attacking instinct.

Craig McDermott: Bowling average of 21.53, economy rate of 3.68 and strike rate of 35.0. 113 wickets in 74 ODIs, with two 4 wicket hauls.
My opening bowler with Curtly Ambrose with all round excellent bowling stats.

My team in general – we’re going to always play attacking cricket which reflects in my choices. Nearly all of my batsmen have a strike rate in the late 70s. I’ve got genuinely match winning batsmen – which is reflected in the number of centuries they’ve got in between them. They’re all capable of building an innings, and I’ve got some explosive power towards the lower middle order. All of my bowlers are genuine wicket takers who’ll trouble all kinds of batsmen, throughout the game. Mark Waugh, Neil Johnson and Graeme Hick can all act as my fifth choice bowlers depending on conditions. Our aim to bowl out the opposition, and with my bowling line up it’s perfectly possible against any batting line up you can assemble. I’ve also got some of the best fielders in the draft who’ll help save me 10-20 runs in the outfield, and make sure that any chance/half chance is taken.

I think we should make it clear in the title that this is a 90s ODI draft and all players must be judged for their performances in the 90s.

Thread Title: 90s ODI Draft: Zlatan_ish vs Skills

Then highlighted in OP: all players to be judged for performances in the 90s etc.

Team Bhuvan -

S Afridi
S Jayasuriya
R Mahanama
J Kallis
G Flower
D Cullinan
A Flower (wk)
C Harris
R Singh
J Srinath
A Javed

12th man - S Tikolo
S Afridi - BOOM BOOM Afridi as he is popularly known, this lad made this presence felt immediately with his fearless batting displays. He is known for his aggressive batting style, and holds the record for the fastest ODI century which he made in his first international innings, as well as scoring 32 runs in a single over, the second highest scoring over ever in an ODI. He also holds the distinction of having hit the most number of sixes in the history of ODI cricket. If that ain't enough to get you scared of this bloke, there are pictures of him with AK47s on google.

S Jayasuriya - The Matara Marauder as he is popularly known, he was instrumental in reshaping limited overs cricket. Much before the Sehwags and Gilchrists came along, Sanath epitomized aggressive yet effective batting in limited overs cricket. Jayasuriya is the only player to score more than 13,000 runs and capture more than 300 wickets in One Day Internationals and is regarded as one of the best all rounders in the history of Limited overs cricket. Add to that the fact he was a classy fielder and you have got one of the Legends of the game.

R Mahanama - During the period from 1990-1999, Mahanama played 171 matches and scored 4175 runs at a healthy average of 30.69 with 4 centuries. Stylish, calm and composed, he often played the Rahul Dravid role for the Sri Lankans. Largely unnoticed, his contributions were key in Lanka lifting the '96 WC.

J Kallis - One of the finest all rounders of my generation, he is the lynchpin of my batting lineup. With an average of 40 in the given time frame along with 5 centuries and 56 wickets, he is my turn to player in case of crisis. A solid batsman, pacey bowler and an excellent fielder, they don't come any more complete than him.

G Flower - More than 3500 runs with a highest score of 140 in a largely under appreciated Zimbabwe side should indicate the prowess of Grant Flower. He will play the Anchorman role in my team, should my top order collapse. "Flower Power", the combination of Grant and his brother Andy Flower, was the mainstay of Zimbabwean batting for a decade. A fitness fanatic, he was one of the best fielders to have come out of the African continent.

D Cullinan - More than 3600 runs with a healthy average of 34.5 does not do justice to the talent that was Daryll Cullinan. A very dependable batsman who could guide the team out of crisis, he was one of the most technically gifted South African batsman.

A Flower - A strokeplayer, expert in finding gaps and pinching singles and twos, he is exactly the type of batsman you need in the middle and later parts of the game. A very talented keeper, he seldom let anything past him.

C Harris - 132 wickets, 2500+ runs and close to 50 catches in the given time frame. Need I say more? He is my all rounder who was a more than capable pinch hitter.

R Singh - The best fielder of the Indian squad in the 90's, he was the precursor to the Kaifs and the Kohlis of today. Close to 1800 runs with a century and 60+ wickets to his credit, he was a more than useful all rounder whom you could rely on to break partnerships.

J Srinath - The mainstay of Indian bowling for a decade, he had 237 wickets in the 90s (4th highest) at an average of 28.

A Javed - He has the best bowling figures of the 90s (7/37) and along with Waqar and Wasim, formed the triumvirate of the swing bowling. A very lethal pacer, he has 158 wickets to his credit.

USP of my team -

1. Both my fast bowlers have a cumulative total of 395 wickets between them in the 90's. That is a huge number, considering one was largely under rated and the other was probably undervalued as he was 3rd in pecking order for his nation.

2. My medium paced all rounders ( Harris, Kallis and Robin) have a total in excess of 250 wickets between them. Proper all rounders who will deliver with the ball.

3. My two spinners Sanath and Shahid have a total of 230 wickets between them in the given time frame. Considering none of them are specialist spinners, I'd say they would be very effective and only add to my multi dimensional attack.

4. Batting wise, all players till Robin Singh (9th) have at least one century to their credit.

5. I have no Aussies in my team but two players from Zimbabwe and one from Kenya. All you fellas who more often than not find yourself backing an underdog, you know whom to vote for!:wenger:

Team Battle Cry -We'll blast them with lightning bolts from our arse!!

6. J. Rhodes
7. H. Streak
8. S. Warne
9. C. Vaas
10. M. Muralitharan
11. V. Prasad

12. R. Smith

1. M. Taylor (Captain) - one of Australias greatest captains. Not only a great leader, an excellent slip fielder. Held the world record for the most number of slip catches made. Avg 32 with 1 century and 28 half centuries. 3500 odi runs.

2. A. Stewart (WK) - if this man gets going, then he will score plenty of runs at a very high speed. Englands most capped wicket keeper. Fantastic with the gloves 4 centuries, 28 half centuries boasting a healthy average of 31, i believe my openers compliment each other well with the left/right hand combo. 4676 odi runs.

3. S. Fleming (vc) - widely known as New Zealands most successful captain and also one of their greatest batsmen. Boasting 8 centuries, 49 half centuries, averaging above 30 with a strike rate nearing 75, Fleming never panicked and was always key in world cups where New Zealand tended to over achieve. 8000 odi runs.

4. J. Miandad - another legend but this time from Pakistan. This man had everything really. World cup winner in 92. 8 centuries and 50 half centuries averaging at 41, i cant ask for a better match winner in my line up. 7381 runs. World cup winner.

5. R. Raja - Stylish, wristy, flicks all round the wicket with a cool head. Scored 2 centuries in 92 which allowed Pakistan to win the world cup, was a key figure. 9 centuries, 31 half centuries averaging 32. 5800 odi runs. World cup winner.

6. J. Rhodes - All round brilliance. Widely known as the best fielder at backward point of all time. Not just a great fielder, contributed with the bat. Was brilliant at running between the wickets and causing opposition on the back foot not to mention find the boundary at ease with a strike rate of 80. With 2 centuries and 33 half centuries at an average of 35, i have the perfect all rounder needed in this team. Nearly 6000 odi runs.

7. H. Streak - Zimbabwe's one-man attack. Fast, strong, great fielder, can smack the ball to all parts. Zimbabwe's best bowler and all round cricketer they have produced. Taking 239 wickets at an average of 29. Streak also averaged 30 with the bat with a strike rate of 73 to accelerate the innings if need be. A fantastic cricketer. 3000 ODI runs. Excellent in the field aswell.

8. S. Warne - legend. Quite possibly the best spinner who ever graced the game. Statistics seem to back this up. 293 wickets averaging 25. Can rip through the heart of any lineup. Great team man and will always pump the crowd and the players up. Can throw the bat around aswel if need be with a S/R of over 75. World cup winner

9. C. Vaas - More variety. This time Sri Lankas best new ball bowler they have ever produced and hes a left armer. 400 odi wickets averaging at 27.53 with four 5 wicket hauls and a best of 8/19. Vaas has the skill and the guile to outfox his batsmen and is a big wicket taker. Still rated by many today as Sri Lanka's 2nd best ever bowler after Murali (above Malinga). Was also a very useful better and was known as an all rounder later in his career contributing very smartly. World cup winner.

10. M. Muralitharan - Champion. If Warne isnt the best spinner arguably ever, then its this man. And i have them both in this team. The stats just keep coming. 534 wickets, averaging 23. 10 fivers, 15 fourfers. an economy rate under 4. best of 7/30. Legend. Unplayable. World cup winner.

11. V. Prasad - Tall, can get purchase off the wicket, can move the ball both ways. He provides abit of the unkown in this attack. Can be very unpredictable but on his day, devastating. 196 wickets averaging 32. Still a very decent bowler, can go for a few but on lively wickets, can be very dangerous.

12. R. Smith - a great 12th man to have if i want to go in with the extra batsmen. Averaged 39 in ODI's with 4 centuries and 15 half-centuries. Was a very pleasant player to watch with a S/R of 69. His highest ODI score was 169 not out which was a fantastic achievment in the 90s.

My team - I have one of the most influential captains to have ever graced Australian Cricket and widely known as one of the best in Mark Taylor alongside S Fleming who was also praised for his captaincy. I beileve my bowling attack is match winning on any pitch in the world against any opposition. Teams will be bowled out for under 200 with this attack. Batting lineups will be tested technically in every department. They have to deal with leg spin, off spin, left arm seam and swing, right arm bounce, seam, swing. Every department will be tested and teams will struggle. I have big hitters in my line up like Stewart, Streak, Rhodes and a touch of class with Miandad, Raja, Fleming. Lets not forget the athleticsm in my team and the enthusiasm shown by the likes of Rhodes, Taylor, Streak, Vaas, Warne in this fielding unit.

Hi all,

I will be traveling from Oct 24 to Oct 29th in Bhutan and as far as I am led to believe, the Internet situation in that nation is highly erratic. I will try and keep up with this thread, but in the meanwhile if someone is interested in temporarily managing Team Bhuvan, it would be of great help.
I hope the OP would be fine with this (Aldo?).

Cheers,
Bhuvan.

Aldo here my team and Strategy against your in second round.
My team vs Aldo's

Players profile
GARY KRISTEN
As an international cricketer Gary Kirsten was known by his peers as a man on whom the team could depend in times of crisis. As an opening batsman for South Africa his ability to withstand enormous pressure from the fastest bowlers in the world to the guile and cunning of the most crafted spinners was legendary. The fact that he was able to score a century against every Test playing nation bears testimony to his ability to adapt to all conditions and to understand the dynamics of every bowling attack

SACHIN TENDULKAR
Sachin Tendulkar has been the most complete batsman of his time, the most prolific runmaker of all time, and arguably the biggest cricket icon the game has ever known. His batting is based on the purest principles: perfect balance, economy of movement, precision in stroke-making, and that intangible quality given only to geniuses: anticipation. If he doesn't have a signature stroke - the upright, back-foot punch comes close - it is because he is equally proficient at each of the full range of orthodox shots (and plenty of improvised ones as well) and can pull them out at will.
There are no apparent weaknesses in Tendulkar's game. He can score all around the wicket, off both front foot and back, can tune his technique to suit every condition, temper his game to suit every situation, and has made runs in all parts of the world in all conditions.

AAMIR SOHAIL
A combative left-hand opener, Aamer Sohail was a predominantly back-foot player whose forte was improvisation. He loved to attack, and almost found it impossible to control his aggression. Aamir played a big part in Pakistan's World Cup triumph in 1992.

ALISTAIR CAMPBELL
An elegant left-handed batsman,he's an aggressive batsman and wonderful fielder. He will be my sub for this match.

STEVE WAUGH- CAPTAIN
He is one of the finest captain, won world cup in 1999.great middle order batsmen.technically superior with sound knowledge of the game.He can play under different circumstance. He is cool and collective in his approach. He can attack at right time as well defend when situation arises. The Mr.Perfect.He bowls with great accuracy. His medium pace as troubled lot of top class batsman's.
Had won 2 world cups with Australia, one as captain in 1999.

HANSIE CRONJE - VICE CAPTAIN
With his aggressive batting, intelligent medium-pace bowling and brilliant fielding, Cronje was a formidable competitor.Like steve waugh he got great leadership qualities.he knows his limitations and play best innings when needed.

NEIL FAIRBROTHER
Fairbrother carved out a career for himself as England's leading one-day batsman in the middle order for much of the 1990s, picking the gaps with scientific precision, dabbing the ball behind square, occasionally hitting over the top on the leg side - and running like hell. He always had a good eye for quick singles. An useful lower middle order batsman.

MOIN KHAN
An effective rather than stylish batsman, Moin relishes a crisis and has held together Pakistan's lower order time and again. His quick feet and improvisation are even more productive in one-day cricket where he scores at speed. Behind the stumps, he is the chirpiest of keepers.

KAPIL DEV
Kapil Dev was the greatest pace bowler India has produced, and their greatest fast-bowling allrounder. He got great accuracy and can swing either ways and troubled any batsman. His economy is below 4.0 which is simply outstanding.A naturally aggressive player, he often helped India in difficult situations by taking the attack to the opposition.
Other notable feature is that he is world cup winning captain for India in 1983.

DANIEL VETTORI
Left arm spin bowler, his mastery of drift and subtle variations in flight, speed and length earned him a reputation as New Zealand's most dangerous player. It was that guile and ability to confuse the batsmen that sometimes turned what seemed like innocuous deliveries into unplayable hand grenades by the time they reached the other end.He is also a handy lower order batsman useful with his bat.

PAUL REIFFEL
Paul Reiffel was a nagging right-arm seam bowler and a very capable lower order batsman. Throughout a career which saw him appear in many Tests and one-day internationals for his country, he was a player who distinguished himself with his ability to bowl an awkward line and length and to complement it with a capacity to cut the ball both ways off the pitch. His unstinting accuracy and control was also a key to his success.

COURTNEY WALSH
My opening right arm fast bowler, is one of those special bowler who work restlessly, bowl with great accuracy and pace. His economy stat shows us how good this monster is.His deadly line and length as troubled all top class batsman.A physiological phenomenon, Courtney Walsh probably bowled faster for longer than any man in history. His spirit was as unbreakable as his body. His action lacked the elegance of those bowlers, but its economy and his natural athleticism ensured he was accurate and durable, even over very long spells and he used his height (about 198 cm, or six-foot-six) to extract occasionally vicious bounce.

Bowling

Team Tactics against Aldo’s
Will be opening with left and right combination of Gary Kristen and Sachin tendulkar, both the batsman playing in their favorite position where they had scored lot of runs from. Both combined scoring from opening position is close to 13000 runs where no other opening pair in this draft has got.Aldo’s opening(Mcgrath/Younis) bowlers will be played with caution, TBH rest of the bowling look ordinary. With lack of spinners in his team will be exposed.Kristen will be keeping his wicket while Sachin will be going for all out attack against both the bowlers. From15 over or so which is a very good foundation for the rest of the batsman’s to come. My 1st down batsmen (Aamir sohail) is very good at playing both fast bowling and the spin and he will be good at keeping the rate rate over 6.00 from 15 over’s onwards ,followed by Steve Waugh and H.Cronje both are solid middle order batsman’s would could rotate the strike with quick singles between wickets. As both are very good players of medium pace and spin,.But Aldo’s team does not have a spinner in the pitch Which will be worrying sign for him He will be finding hard to bowl his whole quote of 50 overs. Lack of quality bowlers in latter stage will give him lot of pressure on part time bowlers of Aldo’s team will cost him with huge score to chase. Every chance of 300+ score is possible here.

I will be opening with the bowling from CA Walsh and other-end with Kapil dev. Both are quality new ball strike bowlers.Kapil’s out swinger will test his opening batsman who lacks quality defensive mechanic against my opening bowlers who are well known for their economy rate which is close to 3.80.Gunguly is poor batsmen aganist quality pace bowling attack As the early wickets will put enormous pressure on middle order who will be under huge score to chase. My 1st change in bowler will be Paul Reiffel who had played his entire carrier in 1991-99 is well know for his good line and length well capable of moving the ball both the ways. His economy rate is at 3.92 which is less that four run for the entire carrier is something special. As wickets starts tumbling, my fourth choice bowler would be Cronje followed by Vettori and Steve Waugh.Cronje is classic middle order bowler who is more than capable of striking at regular interval.Vettori is left arm spin bowler, his mastery of drift and subtle variations in flight, speed and length earned him a reputation as New Zealand's most dangerous player. It was that guile and ability to confuse the batsmen. Steve Waugh is an quality middle over bowler who know how to take important wickets of top class batsmen’s
As my team got batsman (Sachin and Aamir) who can be used as stock bowlers can be used in various situations if need arise. All I can see from this match is Aldo’s team will be completely outplayed in every department of the game

Alright, so the group stage is over. These were the final scores :

Group A
Zlatan 5-2 Shr
Anointed One 5-1 Skills

Zlatan 8-3 Anointed One
Skills 5-3 Shr

Anointed 3-2 Shr
Zlatan 1-1 Skills

Group B
Aldo 9-6 Lowkey
Mankini 8-2 Bhuvan

Aldo 5-2 Mankini
Lowkey 4-2 Bhuvan

Aldo 3-2 Bhuvan
Lowkey 2-2 Mankini

Hence, Zlatan wins the first group, with Anointed One coming second.

I come first in the second group, with Mankini progressing in second place by the virtue of a bigger goal difference than Lowkey, who also had the same number of points.

As always, we will have players picked from the losing teams. All qualifying teams will pick 2 players each. First the group winner will pick one, then the runner up will pick two, then the group winner will pick his second.

In this case, Zlatan will pick one from the 24 names that belonged to Shr and Skills, and then Anointed One will pick two, and then Zlatan will pick his second. Similarly for the second group.

After all the participants have picked players from losing teams, there will be a fresh draw for the semis.

Group winners should have both the first two picks IMO as a reward for winning their group. Or else it doesn't even make a difference.

Well, If we do that then they become more strong.

The reason for doing a MK pick like this is because there is no imbalance.

Surely there should be some sort of reward though? In fact I'd rather have the two picks together rather than the first one.

Yeah this is probably a bit fairer in terms of rewarding group winners.

Well, If Zlatan wants it, I have no problem swapping it. I will get the first pick while he gets two consecutive picks. :D
