Gaming Official: Call of Duty Black Ops

That's a bloody rip off. Bet the RC Car is complete shite with a range of 5 metres.

Supposed to be some sort of announcement today.

This?

An alleged Google ad has sparked rumours that the multiplayer beta for Treyarch's upcoming FPS, Call of Duty: Black Ops, will be exclusive to Xbox 360.

The ad reportedly links to a beta website where users can sign up for the 'Xbox 360 exclusive multiplayer beta'. It also specifies September 1 - which timekeepers will note is today - as the start date.

Coincidentally, Treyarch has been gearing up for a multiplayer reveal later today. Community manager Josh Olin confirmed Treyarch would be announcing something later today through Twitter yesterday.

"So we're rehearsing for tomorrow's #CODBlackOps MP reveal... "

Treyarch's community manager also responded to the Google ad, saying it was not "official". However, he didn't deny the existence of the beta - or the exclusivity.

"Bing / Google / ads for a #CODBlackOps BETA are not official ads. As always, if I don't say it, it's not official!" tweeted Olin.

The quick fingers at Leakerz supposedly snapped a few pictures of the beta's website, which states the beta will be revealed at 7pm Pacific time (that's 2am UK time).

During E3, Treyarch said it would be working with Microsoft on some Black Ops exclusives for Xbox 360 players - could the multiplayer beta be one of those?

Treyarch recently confirmed it would release tools and support the mod community post release.

How/When? Have you played other COD's Doc?

I don't know, Biscuit. I can't recall atm, I can check later when I get home but I'm sure I have a newish Call of Duty demo on the PS3 that I downloaded last week or something.

I may be way off here, maybe it's just MW2.

I played a bit of MW on the Xbox360. It was okay, I prefer Rainbow Six Vegas II though.

I think it is. They re-advertised the MW2 demo on the store recently, you probably downloaded that.

Activision's unveiling Call of Duty: Black Ops' multiplayer mode right now at a press-stuffed event in Los Angeles.

Details are still coming in (and we're about to play the game ourselves), but the publisher's already shown a trailer featuring surveillance camera killstreaks, crossbows and remote control buggies that explode on impact (and look awesome).

Playing the game on a giant IMAX screen, Treyarch revealed AI opponents in the game's new combat training mode, encouraged by the fact that 30% of CoD players apparently never go online. This mode can be played offline or with friends.

The new Create A Class features a screen showing your character model, because this time around how you look changes depending on which Tier 1 perk you choose (stealthy players will wear a relevant suit, for example).

Black Ops multi is also set to include rare weapons only found in supply packages. These include death machine and grim reaper, the first of which is an absolutely mental machine gun and the latter a giant, fast-firing rocket launcher. The aforementioned remote control buggy also falls under this category. There's even a gunship you can FLY YOURSELF and a sam launcher that will shoot it down.

Another massive change sees the introduction of Cod Points (or CD), which you'll rack up while you play and can use to purchase abilities usually gained with XP.

CD can also be spent on Contracts; time-limited challenges that you can purchase.

Four new game modes separate from standard XP modes have been added called Wager Matches, in which you put your Cod Points on the line during a match and the top three players reap the rewards. The first is One in the Chamber; pistols only, three lives and you lose your ammo if you miss a shot. The second is Sticks and Stones, in which you've got a tomahawk and cross bow - but the former bankrupts your target. The third is Gun Game, in which a kill puts you up a level in terms of gun power. The last is Sharp Shooter with Random weapons and perks.

In Black Ops you can customise your gun with your own camo, iron sight and emblems. You can also edit together your own emblem on a screen not dissimilar to something found in Forza Motorsport.

And FINALLY Treyarch's adding a Halo-style Theatre mode, which looks almost identical to Bungie's version. All recent Live games can be opened up an viewed, the developer says. A video's going on Xbox Live tomorrow.

And that's it. We're off to play it now, look out for our impressions shortly...

Treyarch has shot down increasingly hot rumours that a Call of Duty: Black Ops public beta is set to arrive on Xbox Live and PSN.

Speaking to CVG at the Black Ops multiplayer reveal event in LA this morning, Treyarch community man Josh Olin confirmed that Activision's not planning a public beta at the moment and said that current console trials are "internal only".

"We're already doing an internal beta with all sorts of Activision studios - thousands of people are participating in our beta," he said.

"That's the only formal beta that we're planning at the moment. There were a lot of misconceptions, confusion and Google ads. There was some speculation that we'd be launching a public beta tonight - that's not happening. The beta is internal only right now."

He added: "Keeping it internal is very helpful for us. It allows us to move a lot faster on our builds, so if we want to change something we can easily push out a new build within the company to anyone who has one of these dev kits.

"Call of Duty is so much this big mainstream thing that everybody at Activision is playing this game."

Great, another bug ridden nightmare.

Hands on:

We'll be honest - we were expecting to be underwhelmed by Call of Duty: Black Ops' multiplayer mode. After all, when a game like this has proven to be so extraordinarily popular across the globe, why would you risk innovation?

We'll gladly admit; we were wrong. Series substitute dev, Treyarch has clearly poured its heart and soul into the multiplayer mode of Black Ops, introducing a dozen big new features - some huge - and in the process making the stalwart of online FPS feel a little bit fresher than it was before.

Perhaps the most game-changing of all Black Ops' additions (see full Black Ops multiplayer details for the full list) are CoD Points (or 'CD') which can be earned alongside regular XP and spent purchasing basically any traditionally unlocked perk and gun in the game - you no longer have to grind to get the big toys.

You can gain CoD Points through either new Contract challenges or - most excitingly - through gambling your points Poker-style in the four Wager Match types.

The game mode we played is called One in the Chamber, a scenario which has combatants armed with just pistols. As with all Wager games though there's a twist; each player only has one bullet, which is replenished if you hit your man but lost if you miss.

The idea is obviously that players will use their utmost focus and skill to patiently bullseye that perfect shot into their pacing opponent. The reality however - in our brief experience with the mode at least - is that within 30 seconds everyone's shot their lonely bullet into the wall and are now running around the map waving knives around like some sort of Notting Hill Carnival knife fight. This is not necessarily a bad thing of course, as it's genuinely fantastic fun.

The top three players in the game take all the CoD Points and if you're feeling particularly confident you can 'Double Down' on your bet on the pre-game lobby screen.

Other Wager Match types we didn't get to play in our Black Ops hands-on session include Sticks and Stones, in which players are armed with a tomahawk and cross bow and the former 'bankrupts' your target, Gun Game in which a kill levels you up to a new gun, and Sharp Shooter, which has you using Random weapons and perks. All sound like intriguing twists on the CoD formula and seemed to go down well on the playing floor.

As for the vanilla game modes such as Free For All and Team Deathmatch, it's admittedly an initially familiar experience to Modern Warfare 2. Look deeper however and you'll see tweaks everywhere; deathstreaks have been removed (Treyarch says the new Combat Mode AI bots are good enough to help beginners), MW2's annoying 'blood splatter' given the boot and promisingly, maps are now marked into grids, so instead of shouting "He's on the erm... building," you can now deal out orders to head to square A1 or C3. Very useful in team games.

World at War critics will be pleased to hear that Black Ops' weapons feel powerful and explosions sound more dangerous than ever. The crossbow in particular is a lethal piece of kit, though it's going to take plenty of skill to master thanks to its bending projectile arch and wind seemingly blowing your shot off target.

As far as maps go we got to visit Launch, - a giant Russian rocket base in the dusty desert, with lots of close-quarters shooting and stabbing (plus the rocket launches!) - Cracked - an Urban map with plenty of buildings to set up sniping points - and Summit - an open, snowy locale with indoor huts scattered around.

The former was our favourite with plenty of team choke points and a plenitude of incidents walking round corners only to come face to face with an opponent's knife. The closed nature of the environment also showcased the deadliness of the new remote control buggy killstreak, which unsettles you with the whirling sound of its tiny wheels before speeding around the corner and exploding at your feet.

Black Ops multiplayer is looking more ambitious than we imagined. Theatre mode, AI bots and a ton of new customisation options should also help ensure Call of Duty sucks up months of the general publics' social lives for yet another Christmas. Though that bit we're probably not so surprised about.

Not as much news was released as I was expected. Bit surprised there's no beta. I understood the last one was successful.

Interesting new modes. Like the sound of that one bullet one in particular.

However....I have a feeling I'm not gonna enjoy this nearly as much as the Modern Warfare series. I might well be an Infinity Ward fanboy but something about World at War just didn't grab me in the same way.

This made me laugh for some reason. Gamers are a different breed, and COD players are just as nuts as the best of them

So they've re-skinned Modern Warfare and added a few new kill streaks and a few new mode. IW makes Treyarch look like an average developer. I mean honestly why didn't they just call it Modern Warfare 2.5? So little real innovation there. I was looking forward to the next installment by Infinity Ward but now activision have gone and messed that up by firing the minds behind the damn thing.

I mean honestly, are Treyarch that starved of decent ideas?

What, and there was innovation shown between MW and MW2?

This isn't even modern warfare. But seriously, what major changes were you expecting? If it's not broken, why fix it?

It is a game where you run around shooting people in an enclosed area. How fecking innovative can you get?

Correct. Should I? Is it so bad it's good?

I actually thought it was alright :nervous: though maybe that is because I had VERY low expectations as was expecting a cringeworthy plot and directing. As action films go, it was no worse than most run-of-the-mill shoot 'em ups.

But the general notion of it is people control, through the use of cyber-netic implants or some such, death row prisoners in a real life simulated game enviornment. Basically deathrace meets COD

That sounds awesome. I must see this.

I forgot to mention the best bit, which is that it has Amber Valletta playing some sort of controlled SIMS character. Except it's a SIMS world where pretty much anything goes, meaning she spends most of the film walking around like this

note: I think this one shot pretty much sums up the film, but aA search for 'Amber Valletta Gamer' in google images will bring up far more provocative pictures of her from the movie..

Maybe because it has a totaly different SP campaign? Why does no one give a shit about SP anymore? Give me a decent SP campaign over your Team Deathmatches anyday.

I prefer the WAW SP campaign to either of the MW games. I have never tried the WAW MP, though.

I'm not sure I like how some of the things in this are sounding. Crossbows, tomahawks and RC cars with explosives? I'll reserve judgement until I've actually played it, but I'm not expecting to like it as much as MW2.
