I've just watched the video of reeva's dad on the stand and it's really sad, he's a completely broken man yet has shown decency throughout these last awful years,

send Pistorious down for life and give the family justice.

Only 6 years i mean this is absolutely ridiculous. What the hell was the judge even talking about.

udge: Fact that accused has quick temper does not mean he is a violent person

I did not get the impression that prison authorities were trying to vilify accused or brand him as a violent person

Pistorius is "a fallen hero who has lost his career", the judge says.

"Recovery is possible" but it will depend on his attitude, she says.

A long term of imprisonment will not serve justice in this matter, she says.
I mean what the hell is that?

The judge made me lose track of who was the victim here? That was a disgrace considering her parents were sitting in the same courtroom.

She called him a 'Fallen Hero' ffs.

15 years minimum for murder and he gets 6.

I feel sick.

I think it's wrong to send someone to prison, release them and then resentence them to prison for the same set of facts. Yes, original sentence was unduly lenient.

Doesn't sound corrupt at all.

He's an absolute scum bag like every other murderer. Hope he suffers. That poor girls family have been tortured.

Haha it was ridiculous the way she talked about him whilst her family were in the room. One of the most corrupt decisions you will see.

I'd like to say that the judge is right to some respect and that a prison sentence is just a token period he must spend trapped between 4 walls and that when he gets out he will have no sort of life to look forward to as he will be outcast from society and made to feel like the scum of the earth for the rest of his life with little opportunity for work.

The reality though is that he'll quickly settle back into his cosy little community with old hanger-ons ignoring what he's done and feeding him what he wants to hear. He'll have a book deal to look forward to and it will be a best seller and he'll probably have a stint on reality TV where he will either be shown to be "misunderstood" and exonerated or he'll turn into some sort of pantomime villain and play along with the role while it stacks some chips for him.

Gross miscarriage of justice, again! Does this excuse of a judge recognize that a talented young woman lost her life on account of this maniac's murderous tendencies and her family will never see her again, the Law should never look to rehabilitate a murderer the objective should always be to punish. Thankfully there are rumours that the prosecution will appeal and its likely that the Court of Appeal will have to do this 'bought' judge's job for her, again. This rotten judge should be investigated.

Should a person's career have any bearing on the length of a sentence? I'm not sure it does in this case.
Given her comments, it would appear that the judge is working for the defence...

Prosecutor Gerrie Nel had argued in court that the sentence for murdering Reeva Steenkamp was “shockingly lenient and disturbingly inappropriate”.

But judge Thokozile Masipa on Friday rejected the application to appeal against the sentence at the supreme court.

Pistorius shot Steenkamp, a model and law graduate, in the early hours of Valentine’s Day in 2013, saying he mistook her for a burglar when he fired four times through the door of his bedroom toilet.

At his sentencing in July, Masipa listed mitigating factors for giving him less than half the minimum 15-year term for murder, including the athlete’s claim he believed he was shooting an intruder.

“I’m of the view that a long term of imprisonment will not serve justice,” Masipa said.

But Nel argued that the six-year sentence was flawed and that it should be appealed against.

Masipa was the judge who had originally convicted Pistorius of the lesser charge of culpable homicide, the equivalent of manslaughter. An appeals court upgraded his conviction to murder in December.
How the hell does a judge who got it so wrong the first time 'round get to decide the result of the appeal?

Not surprising in the slightest, but this...

... Even by South African standards, this is pretty terrible.

Awful decision, if I was reevas father I'd be counting the days till he's released then I'd get him.

If anyone ever brought serious harm (in his case murdered) to my daughter I'd be a one man wrecking crew.

Understand your point, but if you think about it, your daughter will still be dead and you will be in prison

Everyone says this kind of stuff, but in the end, revenge crimes are pretty rare. Fortunately.

Easy now. This is standard in law, not just South Africa. Plus SA law is based on the English law system being a previous colony :) . Original court makes verdict and gives sentence. Appeal court overturns verdict but cannot dish out sentence. Sentence then again given by original court based on new verdict. If prosecution still unhappy they have recourse. They can appeal the to the Judge President at the court in question. So it would be Judge Masipa's senior who will then most likely ask 3 different judges to have a look at it and decide based on that. If leave to appeal to granted it will go back to the appeal court that overturned the original verdict and they will then have powers to sentence.

I suspect the prosecution are going to appeal. Masipa's been poor during this whole saga. There's no defending her here.

This flog must know someone high up to be getting away with such a lenient sentence.

I hope someone gets him whilst he's in prison. But I imagine he will get some cushy cell because he's a high priority inmate.

Robinho gets 9 years for for sexual assault and this guy gets 6 for murder.

Just like it's ok to show gore on film but showing a bare nipple? It must be porn

Different country different laws. If it were up to me, murder should be for a minimum 25 years, if not life. Rapist getting off with a few years is also a joke and the 9 years for robinho is justice.

Glad he's behind longer than what he was on now and that's the best they could have hoped for.

It always looked like murder, though whether he wanted to murder his girlfriend or someone else I don't think anyone can say.

I'm not usually one to defend South Africa's legal (or any) system, but Sofina Nikat has just been spared jail in Australia for smothering her baby to death. I don't think South African corruption was necessarily the problem.
