Colossal today - absolutely superb. Will surely start against Barca and on today's evidence, he could really influence the game.

Do people still view him as a defensive player? He is at his best when he is on the left and given freedom to drift inside. His movement is excellent, and nothing needs to be said about his attitude and work-rate.

This is why I was perplexed about the number of posters who wanted him to mark Messi in the Final. Not only would that mean playing Park as a holding midfielder or defender, which is frankly absurd, but it would also restrict his important qualities to our attacking play.

Never seen him play so well. He was MOTM by a country mile for me. A collosal performance, both offensively and defensively.

The idea behind putting Park on Messi wasn't out of a belief that he has no ability going forward. The idea was that Park could singlehandedly take Messi out of the game, with the thinking being that "Barca - Messi" < "United - Park".

comfortable and settled in my rut
Little wonder then that the Old Trafford mail room is so full of parcels for him, even rivaling star striker Wayne Rooney's haul of fan-mail.
"They send me everything from food, clothes, sweets," Park said. "I have been sent money before because the notes in South Korea changed and they sent me the new ones so that I could see them because I'm living here. Maybe they're worried I'll forget about home!" [...]
"I actually don't like being a famous person, but I play for Manchester United so I get that attention and there aren't many Asian players in Europe or the Premier League, so that's more attention for me and I have to play better than other players in Europe." [...]
"Even though I am famous when I finish my career my fame will be decreased so it will be more relaxed at home," he said. "I left my country for 11 or 12 years and I miss it so I will definitely go back there … I just want to be a normal person."
His fans send him money in the mail. Doubt even Beckham got that.

He seems so down to Earth. Nice bloke, hope he can retire in peace though I assume we'll see him as manager of Korea down the road..

We can't stop here. This is bat country.
Park is a big worry for me at the moment.

He seems to be bringing virtually nothing to the table.

I thought the Palace game was a particular nadir, and he would be nowhere near the first team set-up for along time, but alas, he was back in the frame tonight and frustrated the life out of me, even if he wasn't quite as bad as against Palace.

I wonder if his time is up here. I've got to admit I'll be pretty pissed off if he gets the nod in the Europa League ahead of the youngsters.

Can only see him featuring sporadically from here on out.

20-5....Because 20 is the new 18.
He's been asked to play out of position too much, and in other threads i've said that playing players out of position (jones, smalling, giggs) hasnt been good for the team.

Was asked to play central midfield against palace, and today he was in no-man's land, seemed to play off rooney at times which i thought was bizarre - i felt sorry for him, he looked clueless and didn't know where to run, where to stand, what to do.....to tackle or not, to get back and help the defense or stay further forward...
he was just, really, lost.....

Stick him on the wing or if not, just don't play him, IMO.

Park had NOTHING to do with our loss today. Look elsewhere for your scapegoats please.

I agree. He gets shunted into positions that others are meant to specialise in then folk say he brings nothing to the table. Well, Rooney didn't offer a lot tonight, I thought Giggs gave the ball away too many times (although he was atleast looking to push the attack forward) and Young didn't produce anything of any quality.

Park gets ask to start as the spare man in midfield then thrown out on the left. The problem with him being used as a utility man is that he isn't going to excel in breaking down teams but he was getting into the box and was showing as an option. Others should be stepping up to mark.

Please, I'm not scapegoating him. I'm just worried about his form and wondering where he fits in now that we're out of the CL, which was often his stamping ground.
Pretty sure ssky was talking to the other two posters.

Good point on the bold part. I could see him playing more regularly in the league if Young fails to improve, with the latter getting EL games. We all saw last season how consistently effective Park was tucking in from the wing (and with some semblance of a normal midfield behind him).

I thought Cleverley had sloppy passing. Don't think he made 50% success in the 2nd half. Park won quite a few balls. Was definitely the better of the two tonight.

Cleverley just has this "golden boy can't do no wrong" reputation on here at the moment.

I love Park as much as the next man but has he played well this season, admittedly he's not been involved much but I'm starting to worry that he's on a downward spiral.

Him and Cleverley in CM was never going to be a good idea tbh.
Why not? Good ball retention and movement on it's day, both players have good engines too, not a terrific midfield but one that should be able to protect a two goal lead.

waiting for everyone else to catch up!!
Harsh lads, Park is not a CM we all know that. Should really be looking at SAF for playing him there. Park made some decent tackles and interceptions first half, and no-one covered themselves in glory in the second.

Ajax looked a team second half and we looked like a bunch of players who haven't played that much together and as a result just haven't got the same type of familiarity with our play.

I think it's very harsh for anyone to condemn Park on a performance in centre mid. we all know that it isn't a position. He's a player who will always give his all, which can often help to make up for his lack of ability.

One back from injury and the other not having played a lot of football at all this season plus not beeing a CM anyway.
Not a good idea.

Is Park physically the weakest player in the Premier league?

Must be all the running he does, he loses all mass.

Anyone who expected anything more (probably not many of us) would of course need a reality check.

Like many people have already said, he did just enough. Also, you think a professional player likes being played in a position where he knows he's going to pick up more than a fair amount of post-game slagging? Still he goes out and does the work for the club and his rested teammates.

Maybe but SAF sees them in training every day, he has a better idea of where they at physically, it was a mistake though in the end.

This might not go down well but is it time for Park to move on?

He's been a good servant but I think we should start looking to move him on, Valencia, Nani and Young are so far ahead of him and on top of that he's 31. His appearances these days seem to be for the sake of it. He's not really offering much when he plays either.

I'll probably get hammered for this, but I agree with you. He's never been particularly productive, he seems to be used as more of a defensive wing option, to track a danger man. He's never really been creative enough to play as a normal attack minded winger. I can see him moving on soon, or put differently, I can't see him featuring much, so maybe a move on would be in the best interests of both him and club. Loyal servant though, and I'm grateful for the work he's put in for us down through the years.

I'd keep him if he's content to spend most of the time on the bench. He's still a useful option to have or just to rest the first teamers. We shouldn't play him as a CM though.

Disagree with both of you, and two posts above you somebody says he doesn't rate him at all

This thread goes in circles. Obviously we have no need for him in the most recent games, and it hasn't helped that when he has played he's been off form and stuck in CM. He'll come back in the team and probably get us a vital goal and everyone will be praising him again. I'd say he's got another 2 or 3 years in him.

One thing that I'd like to be changed, is the idea that we have to play Park in all the big games over the likes of Nani or Young. Yes, Park has done very well in the big games in his United career, but in my opinion, when we're playing against sides who are just as good or better than us, we need that extra bit of quality that Park doesn't have. Park will give us a work rate rivaled only by Wayne Rooney, but he won't add as much offensively. If Nani was the same Nani as when he first got here, I'd understand selecting Park over him, but the fact is, Nani does track back and does work hard defensively as well, so we're not really downgrading defensively too significantly, but we would be significantly upgrading our attack.
