Paul Pogba player of the year 2019-2020

Pogba is a good player not a great player. I think it is a combination of two things that may stop him getting the praise he clearly has the talent for and being that great player he has the potential for. Firstly, he is complacent. He seems to show moments of brilliance like that pass to Rashford out of nowhere, but then 10 mins later he doodles on the ball and shrugs a pass off. Kante usually cleans up his mess for France so hopefully Mctominay will start to do this. The second point is one he cannot control, we rely way too much on him and our midfield is a shambles. KDB would not be the same player if he was in this united team. It is painful to watch but a lot of the time you see three or four players swamping Pogba putting him under intense pressure to always do something magical. KDB has two Silvas, Rodrigo Mahrez etc around him also being man marked. Even for Messi has players being marked around him. This allows them space and that extra bit of time to do something brilliant. As soon as pogba gets the balls, you have 3 players running to him leaving Andreas open as teams do not fear his impact. We need this midfield to step up there game. Not signing anyone was a disaster, Bruno Fernandes would of really helped free Pogba up.

He definitely has a chance of being our player of the season - he's our best outfield player, by a considerable distance.

There are better players in better teams elsewhere, though, who are much more likely to take the main award (I'd probably bet on De Bruyne).

Hmmm he could and possibly should given his ability

reckon consistency will cost him and we will get 40-50 7+ out of 10 performances from AWB

Pogba will never be recognized as that until united really challenge for titles. I cant think of a midfielder who was seen as that while playing for a team not challenging. Unless you are a striker or goalkeeper you need to play in elite team for those kind of recognition
Gerrard

Yes agree to a point. But if he was the main man in the revival of Manchester United this year by putting in MOTM performances bagging 20 plus goals, even getting United into the Top 4 alongside an FA Cup or Europa League I feel he should/would be considered for those sorts of accolades. I think if United where to achieve that this year it would be just as good as challenging for the title from where we have come from and what was expected of us.

Going back to the world cup he was arguably one of Frances best players, he thrived in this team because he was surrounded by world class players and the weight of expectation for him to perform was not as great. Where as at United he feels he needs to be that player because there is no one around him capable of doing it. A player like Dybala who would carry a higher price tag and the same expectations as Pogba to perform well would help Pogba immensely if playing in the same team. Giving Pogba more freedom and taking some of the expectation off him.

Some players thrive in different team dynamics I just don't think Pogba is comfortable being the only so called "Superstar" in a team. Where as the likes of Hazard loved that at Chelsea.

Imagine, for a moment, a player who over the course of a campaign could make more tackles than Virgil Van Dijk, complete more dribbles than Sadio Mane, win possession more times than Fernandinho, head more balls than Harry Kane, create more chances than Leroy Sane and succeed in more duels than N’Golo Kante.

It sounds implausible, doesn’t it? A character confected by some Xbox teenager on Fifa, perhaps. But – and you know where this is going – those comparatives were all true of a certain Manchester United player last season. While these particular statistics have been cherry-picked to illustrate a point, thebreadth of Paul Pogba’s talent means he ranks highly across a remarkable range of measures.

Just saw this in the Athletic - can’t believe there are people that underrate this guy so much.

EDIT full stats here

Here goes: last season Pogba made 30 tackles (Van Dijk: 28), 60 dribbles (Mane: 51), won possession 218 times (Fernandinho: 162), headed 120 balls (Kane: 117), created 55 chances (Sane: 40), and won 234 duels (Kante: 146). Clearly there are reasons for each little victory, but the point remains: he can do a lot of different things on a pitch. More importantly, this is what he is asked to do by a United team not blessed in midfield or with world-class talent.

You know sometimes you just sit there philosophising like you're Aristotle and it just dawns on you how fantastic something is. I just did that with Pogba. What a player. I'd love to keep him but he's going to be sensational in a functional team soon.

I remember when he played for Juve. I thought he would be the next Ballon D'or winner after Messi and CR7.
He's actually wasted a good few years of his career and stagnated in terms of development with us. The club midfield legends who should be guiding him (Scholes, Keane) have gone on TV different times to go on and personally attack him. Him and Zidane seem like a match made in heaven, I wonder Flo never really pushed for him.

The problem with Pogba in this United side is that by having him in the team you contribute goals and assists BUT you also lose something from a defensive and tactical point of view

Pogba is a high class player but needs the platform to play and needs others to do his dirty work....this is not necessarily a criticism but the point is I’m not sure we at this moment in time actually gain as much as we lose by playing Pogba at times

I think people are overly critical of him because of their huge expectations. Still he's the only world class player we have in the team (with DDG in woeful form) so he can't pull trees on his own.

Even Messi sometimes looks lost when put in dysfunctional team (Argentina).

He's frustrating to watch because he often tries to do too much on his own, but I guess he's just as frustrated playing alongside the shit he's had to since we've had him.

Of course it would be easier to attract new talent if his brothers and agents didn’t take every opportunity to let the world know united’s superstar wants out.

Would be easier to attract and keep talent if the club was run better, qualified for the Champions League and didn't just look for quick fixes all the time. Pogba's just won the World Cup and is one of the best midfielders in the World. Why would he want to play in the Europa League?

If his last 2 months of last season had been anywhere as good as what it should have been given how brilliant he is according to some we might have actually qualified for the champions league.

Hasn’t scored a goal from open play since the middle of February in the premier league (which is about six weeks less than Lingards drought from open play and is quite rightly being called on for it but not saint pogba) but apparently he is our balloon door nomination according to some nut jobs on here.

Thank you. I hope this will shut up the anti-Pogba people.

How about wins and goals as stats? If so it does not look pretty.

Bad link. So what do you want to do with Pogba? Sell him and hope you can buy replacements? I'm not sure where you are going with your anti-Pogba posts. Clubs don't sell their best player unless it makes a lot of sense (money, different direction, have young replacements...). Selling him now or in January makes little sense.

You claim he does not want to be here but the above stats show he puts in a good effort over a season. In the last three matches I've watched Pogba make great passes, create a late penalty with a great run, win the ball to create a goal (albeit after losing it), and dominate his area. I'm just confused why you think he sucks and doesn't play like he doesn't want to be here.

You shouldn't put much weight into the dubious quotes in the papers.

Did you miss his impact on palaces winning goal?

As I’ve said if I didn’t have to listen to nut jobs on here talking about the player as if he was the second coming I could probably get on board with him. The guy hasn’t scored from open play since the 18th February yet there is a ballon dor thread for him!

Is he our best midfielder currently? Yes, but he needs to up his game a damn sight more than he has been doing going back to the last 2 moths of last season where he was abysmal in most games. If someone wants to give us £150 million for him or a deal of that level with players we actually want I’d snatch thier hands off in the summer.

Unless he wins the balloon door

Well, like it or not he is one of the best players in the world. You know WC winner (could have easily been player of the tournament if he scores near the end of the final), multiple Serie A winner, etc..

Yes, he hasn't scored from open play in a while, however, how many assists does he have. Do they not matter?

You keep harping on the last two months of the season. You do know these are human beings and they get tired and suffer from knocks and nagging injuries. Maybe you'll recall that with the WC Pogba, except for some injury time, played about 16 months without an extended break.

Maybe try this scenario: We come in 4th or 3rd, Pogba has a great season and he decides he wants to stay because now we have CL and he can see the club improving. In your mind I guess you would rather us finish 6th, Pogba leave, and hope we can get good replacements and start all over.

I’ll take scenario one every time but I believe him, his agent and his entourage want a move regardless and wished it had been this summer but have to wait for next.

Assists do matter and he has a couple already, would rather they were when it’s level than 2-0 up against a team who looked well beaten already.

Don’t care if he’s not scoring as long as he’s creating and involved and not a passenger like Lingard.

Your attention is on the wrong people.

He took a risk and lost the ball. All dribblers do that, especially when they're doing a solo act of pulling the rabbit out of the habit.

That goal was on De Gea, btw. Got beaten at his near post, even when the shot was at him. I knew people would bring this up to scapegoat Pogba again.

Well he needs to improve on his dribbling because he’s being caught on the ball way too often, he needs to improve on his goal contribution and he needs to improve on his tracking back but that won’t happen.

Your midfield is probably the weakest part of your team and you want to be rid of the strongest player there basically because he’s not doing the job of a three man midfield personally, fair enough, lucky for Utd you’re not making the decisions.

Should have seen me on football manager back in the day pal. I don’t want rid of him I want him to up his game dramatically.

Our top scorer from last year, who also happens to be our top assistor, needs to improve his goal contribution and track back while playing in a two man midfield deep in our own half.

Prime Scholes would have let you down as well.

Oh my god, take his away his penalties of which he missed enough and his goal contribution was 5.

Don’t even talk about scholes in the same breath as pogba so far.

Let's take away the penalties*, and Pogba still had 5 goals and 9 assists in the PL. In a season where Lukaku was his main striker, we were playing terrible football and there was constant ongoing drama with Jose till December where he missed out on a bunch of games as well.

But I don't think rationale fits the narrative, so please continue. It doesn't matter that Pogba is by far the best outfield player in the team, could easily have won PoTS last year as well and will probably be in contention this year as well just by starting all our games.

I repeat, your expectations of him, much like those of a lot of posters, are ridiculous. We're not in trouble because of Pogba. Point the finger at Woody.

*Why take away his penalties, though? They're clearly not trivial, if we'd put both of ours away this season, we might be top of the league now. And even from open play, his job is to assist more than to score.

They way it's looking, Paul Pogba is heading down the road of 'wasted potential' to be honest. I'm expecting another shite season for him here, followed by a transfer to Madrid in the summer where he'll start winning trophies again.

Well if his job is to assist more than to score I’d say 9 is fecking terrible. This isn’t some spotty kid from the youth this is one of the most expensive players of all time.

I take his penalties away from the argument of his goal scoring feat because it severely masks his true scoring rate. Do you realise he hasn’t scored in open play since February? Lingard is getting hung drawn and quartered for roughly six weeks longer.

According to reports this morning he has no intention of renewing his contract.

When does his current contract expire?
