Arsenal 1:3 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Thought it was an outstanding match in terms of pace, intensity and drama. It reminded me a little of those big games when SAF and Wenger were going for the titles. The last few years with both teams struggling has seen the game become rather dull.

I thought defensively we were poor. Dont get the love in for Young, Smalling and Lindelof in that one. If it wasnt for De Gea showing why he is the best GK in the world we would have lost. I thought Martial was sublime, and Lingard and Pogba put in a good shift in midfield. Lukaku works hard but seems to be lacking some quality at the moment. For sure it was a red card for Pogba

The big test comes next week. It is a must win game at home if we want to be champions.

Entertaining match, don't really care how many shots Arsenal had 33 or 330, they weren't getting Past De Gea today. Isn't this why we have a goalkeeper to save, media aur everyone else making it as we were saved only by the saves, they should see that we scored 3 goals, 3. Should have scored one more when Lingard missed. It's always frustrating to lose to Arsenal particularly, I don't really like them. When we lost that FA cup quarter final, the match last season as well. We are always the one to break their great form of runs is it . Absolutely buzzing after the victory.

All the stats on display neglect the very simple fact that we were ahead by 2 in 10mins. That changes everything.

Fantastic display from the lads yesterday.Dave's foot was about an inch below saving the only goal we conceeded.A masterclass performance from him which left Wenger and Sanchez looking almost as though they were about to cry.

Martial's shot which was blocked off the line,Young's reading of Ozil's freekick. Our players put their bodies on the line in clearing everything in the final 15minutes.lovely,lovely stuff. So great was the result alongside Dave's performance ,that i slept like a baby, replaying the game in my dreams.

Brilliant game, a throw back to the late 90s early 00s utd-ars games. Exhilarating!

The number of shots from arsenal is being overplayed, the vast majority were poor long rangers or at least straight forward saves. They should've had a penalty on welbeck and DDGs save with his foot is genuinely as good as any save I've ever seen, that's not even hyperbolic its an absolutely unreal save.

We scored 3 very good goals and could've had at least 2 more. When you consider how much better in defence we were I really don't see how anyone can claim we didn't deserve the win. We were the better side.

There's an obvious negative of course but the 3pts now is more important than that is.

Just buzzing off a fantastic game and brilliant win

Had a bigmouth Arsenal fan yesterday telling anyone within earshot, " SANCHEZ HAT TRICK TODAY!"

I'll just leave that there.

When we play against Arsenal in the reverse fixture, they could potentially be without Sanchez and Ozil. They might even stay yet but it seems like they will go whether in January or in the summer.

If those two know where they are going Arsenal will then have the problem of them not trying too hard. Ozil is a cert for the world cup and Sanchez isn't going anyway, so he doesn't have to prove anything.

I'm gonna put my hands up and say I did not expect us to win this game, it would have probably been a 3-3 draw if not for De gea's heroics and the penalty they should have had at least. When Pogba passed the ball to Valencia for the first goal, I was pretty sure it was going to get blocked but the ball went between Moreal and Cech's legs and it was a goal. Also, I didn't expect Lingard to play so well and score 2 goals. That was his best performance of the season so far and if he can carry on this form this will only be good for us. Lukaku, well he could have scored an own goal and everyone would have said he had a poor game but I thought he actually played quite well. He still has a lot of limitations, a poor first touch and gives the ball away more than he holds it but this was his best performance so far against a top 6 team this season. As for Pogba he had 2 assists but his defending is so bad. Time and time again Arsenal players just broke our midfield with ease with only Matic the only one trying to defend and Pogba looked lazy or he was just standing there. i hope Mou tells him to do his defensive duties better because I feel he was part of the reason why Arsenal were making chance after chance.

It's not so simple to say if DDG hadn't played so well, we'd have lost, football doesn't work in that way. Arsenal were attacking and we were defending a 2 goal lead. Trust me if it was 0-0 with 20 mins to go, the stats would have looked completely different cause rather than just defending, we'd also have been looking for the win.

Anyone else think that BTsports commentary was the worst they’ve ever heard in a big match?

They were absolutely cringe inducingly shit. Biased, mindless, thoughtless, platitude spouting cretins all of them.

Managed to fill every minute with inane drivel somehow

For me it's Jose being Jose and it coming off. That's what, once out of 10 (away against good teams)?

It's unbecoming of a team that claims to be good to play that way, and the stats bear out that it's a poor strategy. If Dave isn't in G*D mode, then we're 2-2 and I can only see one result.

At some point Mourinho has to try and have us play football against another decent team. We cannot rely on luck, posts and poor finishing. We conceded 33 shots. 33!!! That is a poor performance any way you look at it.

How many of them made the MOTD highlight reel? 20 odd unthreatening attempts from distance doesn’t count as dominance. De Gea made 2 great saves, one from his own player, and outside of that the closest they came to scoring was a deflection and a pen they didn’t get. Lingard on his own had as many clear cut chances as them.

Go wash your ears.

I definitely wouldn't read into the stats to assess the performance, we were 2-0 ahead after 12 minutes so obviously Arsenal got to shot more. It would have been the same with any other two teams playing, there's no point in attacking heavily when you are away from home and well ahead.

God, that game was so good to watch. It was a classic United at Arsenal game.

I know that we didn't have the possession, we've conceded too many shots and Dave had a great game, but I believe that it's what most of us prefer to watch - not a boring 0:1 win. Come on.

fecking hell we've just gone away to a big rival, stuck 3 past them and won in what was an incredibly exciting game and you still get people moaning!

De Gea made a brilliant save from the Lukaku deflection and a brilliant double save from Lacazette and then Sanchez. Everything else was routine for someone as great as him.

Here here! Shame about Pogba but that aside was great entertainment and result too. I don't think we will, but would prefer we stick with the 3 at back formation, think it suits the players we have right now.

Really pleased with our past few performances.. bit ropey defensively, but much more attacking intent in general and there seems to be a plan and tactical cohesion to the side at the moment. Love that Martial, Young combo down the left and Lingard looks really good away from home in a 3-5-2.

Why did Arsenal put Giroud on and then barely attempt a cross into the box?

It was all dinks from the edge of our area over the top which we dealt with comfortably.

Very odd.

No one will look at that game and say United played well. And if you're being honest, you'd agree.

For most of the game we were shi**ing bricks.

And thanks for your advice, but I'd rather watch my team be 2-0 up and in control of the game than be 2-0 up and look like a bottom-tier team clutching onto their lives for a win. Not against Arsenal.

Well, Alan Shearer did on MOTD (not exactly a man known his love of United) and F365 called it a 'display of awesome counter attacking footbal' so the bold is factually wrong.

We played some exceptional stuff going forward, how can you look upon that flick from Martial and assist from Pogba and not be proud of the class we possess.

Was it perfect? No
Did we play well? Of course we did, we just beat a very good side 3-1 away

He's visibly not fully fit and not rested enough, Jose been telling us this from the moment he came back from his long term injury.

Jose was looking to take him off against Basel but couldn't due to the nature of the game and result itself, same happened against Brighton where he had 90mins under his belt too.

I know that may sound ridiculous but given these exceptional circumstances and taking into account how City plays I feel Pogba being out might not be the end of the world as we might get more defensively sound and he gets the much needed rest for the busy festive schedule.

Take a note that also comes from the someone who loves Pogba and believes we should be more attacking.

I hate it when people say we didn't deserve to win because DDG had many saves to make. Its like goal keeping is not part of the game. One of our strengths is that we are bloody good at keeping out shots. It has to be a perfectly executed strike out of reach to beat him. Its no different from having a great outfield player. The opponent just weren't good enough to make their shots count, not to mention their shoddy defending. Why do they deserve to win with these short comings?

Neutral's would have loved watching that game. We really didn't deserve anything from this game, and the score flatters us greatly. DDG really is the only reason we got out of today with three points.

So many rival fans are seething after this result . United get a 0-0 at Liverpool and get all the slack for that , beat Arsenal 3-1 and still being called lucky. Fact is that in this league it is very rare for a big team to win away at another big team in a comprehensive manner . Just check the records for all the big teams for the last 3-5 seasons and you would see how hardly ever does a big team do it while dominating away from home. United scored 3 away from home and could have scored 5 so I dont see what is lucky about that

It obviously changes the way we set out to play, it's only natural that we don't push as far up the pitch and that we let Arsenal have the ball. Problem was that they were creating quite a few chances at the same time, and that it was a bit of a surprise that we still had a 2 goal lead at half time. Their goal was coming from a mile off, and it was a surprise to see us start the second half in similar fashion to how the first half ended. Very little composure in the way we defended. The vast majority of their shots were easy pickings for De Gea, which is fine enough, though they still had plenty of chances that would normally result in goals

Didn expect that! Belter of a game, and result! Any 3pts away to a top 4 team is brilliant.
Defensively, we were Trojans but sloppy as hell, but I'll take it for now. DDG is absolutely immense, Madid better be thinking more along the lines of £90m if they want to talk about him.

The Pogba red card is a huge blow though. Let's hope we can hobble along and pick up points without him.

There's not many better sights in football than watching a group of friends playing together. Pogba, Lukaku, Lingard and Martial look like best mates on the pitch and it showed in how they passed to one another. I genuinely believe that to become a successful football club it isn't about individuals it's about chemistry. City have got it right and I just hope we can keep it up.

Missed the game but just watching the game back now.

Just seen the first half. I saw some of the comments from Arsenal fans about how after the first 15 mins they peppered us.

After watching that first half, I though we were fairly comfortable. Arsenal probably should have got one back but I thought we looked very dangerous too.

Maybe it's because I'm watching it back without emotion and because I rate De Gea so highly, but Laca one on the crossbar aside, I'd be disappointed if any of those efforts went past him.

I agree! We were always dangerous on the counter attack and Arsenal looked like they could concede any moment. We definitely put enough into that game to win.

Good result for us, let's us take what Mourinho said in the pre match briefing, game at a time. We have players who can take the role of Pogba. So for now let us appreciate the fact we had a good week with great away wins.

We went into this game after scoring 4 past Watford away. Most of our rivals got their result and Arsenal could come 1 point behind us with a win which would practically bring us back in the top 4 race. So, with all that in mind, some are still moaning? Usually, I don't say it, but if you aren't happy after yesterday match something's very wrong.

You can wave and point all you like to those 33 shots, the fact is that Arsenal had only one, single big chance to get back level in this match and that was in the second half after double save from De Gea. And even before that one, Lingard had 1 on 1 vs Cech which should have put us back comfortably in control. We were pure joy to watch on the counter and there were shades of those brilliant counter-attacking football which Jose manage to produce with Real. It was a great game for anyone to watch and if you think that's only because of Arsenal or De Gea, you're wrong.

The only downside is that Pogba red card, but the game itself... Don't know, everyone who was in the away end yesterday must be still in delirium.

Good win, but a horrible game to watch from a United perspective. It's time to move Pogba into the #10 position and bring in another midfielder to start alongside Matic. Defensively, our midfield is non existent. Most good teams are down our defenders throat as soon as they get the ball as we have no one stopping them in midfield. We also need to control the possession a little bit more when we are playing half decent teams. That display from De Gea should win him the Ballon d'Or based on this game by itself.
