PL L FA Premier League

Brentford 4:3 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Sun, 04 May 2025

The only regret is the injury to De Ligt. This was a match solely intended to sharpen players who needed minutes and give done rest to those who didn’t need the minutes. The result is irrelevant…given the circumstances we’re in right now.

Was something going on between Amorim and Thomas Frank prior to the final whistle or during the game? Amorim just briefly shook his hand then went immediately down the tunnel and Frank looked quite baffled by it while laughing

Garnacho now has 21 goal involvements this season. That's not bad at all considering the amount of stick he gets from fans. Still think it's crazy that we'd consider selling him.

Thought we played ok for about 50ish minutes of that and probably deserved a draw.

Amass and Chido clearly need more experience of senior football but I'd still be tempted to avoid sending them on loan until January next season. I genuinely think it would do them some good to be around the start of what is hopefully a rebuild. They will get some games for the under 23s in the EFL Trophy and National League Cup alongside games in pre season and maybe some minutes in the early rounds of the League Cup.

A 4-3 loss is nothing to worry about today. Brentford is a good team with a clear game plan and I still think that Thomas Frank would have been a better fit for us than Amorim. We really rotated for this one, and this team will probably never play in this formation again. It was chaotic, and there was a lot of good and bad things happening on the field. Amass, Frederickson and Obi collected experience today. They are not ready, but you learn from your mistakes, and the PL is gone anyway. Yes. They were all pretty bad, but there are real talents on the way. Garnacho is absolutely annoying in his decision making, but despite that he gets a goal and an assist. He is seriously flawed, but that is quality. Same goes for Mason Mounts performance this afternoon. Dorgu is much better on the left but is shoehorned in on the right side due to Dalot missing. He was okay, but nothing more than that. Bayindir has got great reactions, but he is a real nuisance with the ball at his feet. His communication with the defense is a catastrophe. Ugarte was strong. Luke Shaw is really rusty, but this is the only way to get back in form. De Ligts injury looked bad. Hopefully I am wrong, but I am afraid that this might be a season ender for him. The biggest problem for me today was Mainoo. He was absolutely invisible. No forward drive at all, and it is difficult to find a good place for him in the Amorim system. Our midfield were outplayed for more than an hour and without any order or creativity whatsoever. We were playing sidewards and backwards until Eriksen got on the field. Within a minute after his substitution, we were playing vertically instead with much more of a game plan. Garnacho and Amass grew into the game and we played much wider. That is a problem. We sorely need an Eriksen kind of player with more physicality. That player is not Mainoo.

We are getting very good at just dismissing all these defeats , nothing to worry about , don't care about league games , they are a strong team etc etc

We used to be a proper football club with standards and expectations , those days are long gone. It seems everyone just given up. The defeats don't even hurt anymore.

Defeats still hurt but seeing bigger picture on this

Agree Mainoo was very poor, technically vg but physically poor and lacks pace to get around pitch, but do wee move him on?

A tough learning curve for our youngsters. Last time out they did well, this time they came across a team on a good day for them who played well and exposed some of our issues and their lack of experience. No such excuse for our senior players especially the defence who were found wanting. Some credit to the goalscorers Mount, Garnacho and Amad and then Ugarte in the midfield. Thats about it

Well, is the bigger picture that a PL 6-game winless streak is a good sign?
No it's not a good sign, however if this was happening when he had a pre season and summer window then would feel very differently about the situation.

Amazing what happens when it's 11 v 11; we lose. And yes before you ask a second team that Utd puts out should beat Brentford for heavens sake!!

Honest question, why ? Do you think the name and the red shirt alone should give us victory?

The premier league is brutal, Brentford are in the top half because they have money, good footballers and excellent coaching staff. The days when the "big" teams could win whilst coasting are long gone.

It should but when our 1st 11 is good enough to beat most teams why would our 2nd 11 be any better?

Any team can lose to Brentford. But not any team will go 6 games without a win or finish with 40 pts. As I think we will.

Mainoo would be better suited to less physical and slower paced league. He would blossom in Italy or Spain as he has certain qualities and we could reinvest in more Premier League compatible players. With Garnacho I'm on the fence. He is improving but I think his ceiling is not as high as some imagine. His decision making and execution is lacking and will never be world class. He could be a valuable squad member but as we need funds here and now I really think one of Mainoo and Garnacho could be sacrificed this summer.

As always with these players you sign competition in their position and see if they can make the next step up. If not you sell or be happy with them as squadies

Just watched MoTD: Wayne (and even the often wrong) Danny Murphy summed it up. We've got wing backs who look like they've never practiced it in training, the set-up and tactics is bollocks, Amorim refusing to adapt game-to-game (great bosses do it during the game) to take account of who we are playing, is bonkers.

Wayne's summing up: it all looks so muddled.

I can't shake the feeling that next season will be little better because we are so predictable and Amorim will be gone this time next year

agreed. I'm afraid if it comes down to choosing who to sell to get big bucks between him and Garno, I'd keep Garno

Tend to agree, and watching Antony play to a level above want he did here, makes you think. We need more athleticism in team, that's obvious

"United never lose they just run out of time"...
For a brief few moments yesterday I wonder if we had another ten minutes we could have.....??

I've always heard previous United's Managers say..." I always put out a team I think can win a game". I think Ruben would have had to swallow hard to have said that about yesterdays team.

Yes, we know the 'pros and cons' of yesterdays selection, but it was hard to take to believe we could have won the game.... until the last few minutes.

Frank also criticised us a bit after the game so maybe there's a bit of needle there, maybe the rumours Ashworth wanted Frank/Frank was a contender for Amorim's job and obviously one is under immense pressure.

The last 10 plus years have been rubbish, we all have experienced the heartache. It's 2025 now, some people really need to get a reality check. We lost yesterday, a 16th defeat, we now expect it. Yesterday however was different, we had the 3rd youngest line up ever in Premier league history (30 years or so - or over 1000 Premier league games). We had a 17 year old (who just turned 17) lead the line up. A 18 year old at LWB playing his maybe 5th game, 20 year old at CB playing his 2nd. Then add Maiboo, Garnacho, Drogu and Amad, all under 24, not leaders and still at different levels of experience. A goalkeeper starting his 2nd ever prem game and ill throw in mount and Shaw, both spent longer on the sidelines than on the pitch in the last 24 months. What did people expect?

We lost 4 3 to a Brentford side who are very good at home, score and hardly loose. I thought we did well. I'm gutted about De Ligt and glad Bruno got a full game break as well as Amad getting some minutes. The Premier league is over, we will most likely not win again this season. All that matters is we win the Europa League.

If we were third or seventh and came off a reasonably good recent run I wouldn't have batted an eyelid over that result, given the lineup. It's the fact it's part of a 6-game winless streak that worries me.

So in your view, gaining wins in the PL this season is more important than winning a European trophy?

I was wondering how being around that long and still having a newbie tag was even possible after you explained how it worked. Guess now we know
But I wasnt a newbie.

Anyhow I really dont see why my statement was that controversial other than that maybe people took it as me saying Uniteds result didnt mean much quality wise. I wasnt saying that Uniteds result against them wasnt worthy, I was making the point about the current state of La Liga.

People were questioning why United could go to the 4th best La Liga and win 0-3 and then lose to Wolves and Brentford and I was saying that the reason for that is the 15th team in the EPL is better than the 4th best in La Liga, which is because their overall quality is lower. outside of the top 3 there is a big gap quality wise. Considering you just beat them comfortably sandwiched between the PL results why is that such an ridiculous statement? Have you seen enough of Bilbao to consider them a good side relative to English teams?

I would expect Brentford to beat them as well.

...and what led you to the weird conclusion that I think that? Of course not. But we have a fecking six game winless streak in the PL. About which you'd think people would care. And which makes it absurd to discuss the result in the Brentford game as if it was an isolated ocurrence, explained by the combination of how good Brentford are and our lineup for the evening.
