Post-match discussion

Don't care about the result. All the focus should be on making the final and resting key players (which we did). Amad and mount getting on the scoresheet is great and solid effort by garnacho and Ugarte are also positives.
Spot on

Glad we showed some fight towards the end.

Going to try to explain something to the tone police who were all over the matchday thread arguing in bad faith: It's entirely possible and normal for fans to understand the bigger picture implications (EL being all that matters at this point, players being rested, etc.) while still having an emotional stake in the game and being upset or unhappy with the performance at times and with the goals conceded.
I don't disagree but equally, some of the comments were absolutely over the top and frankly fecking moronic.

Thank friggery we have the Europa, or this would have been the worst ever last 3 months of the season.

16 league defeats, every chance of adding to that over the next 3.

We were the better team.
No, we weren't. Just looked better at the end once Brentford abandoned their gameplan based on a seemingly comfortable lead.

Not complaining, good rotation, opportunities for kids and we didn't see heads drop and players roll over at 4-1. Seen much worse this season.

Proves my point that some on here just want to be pissed off. Absolutely nothing riding on this match and the team was largely a mixture of kids with barely any Premier League experience and players coming back from injuries.

Aye, I'm honestly pretty happy after that. Loads of positives to take out from a totally inconsequential game.

The De Ligt injury was the only thing to be annoyed about

Embarrassing to lose to poor sides routinely. Think we have learned that Amass and Obi are a couple of years away. Shaw looks done, and I think it’s getting close to the time to have serious conversations about Mainoo
I have no embarrassment left. Just beginning to enjoy everything unfolding and appreciating that there are bright sparks and hope for us if we can build the right squad

at 4-1 was worried Brentford would add more, yet we're coming out of the game with a closer 4-3 scoreline. It is what it is. League has been poor and over for a while now. MDL injury not good, but Mount, Shaw, Diallo got a run out, Ugarte did well. Good goal from Garnacho. Baptism of fire for the young ones.

Ugarte alone in midfield, youngsters couldn’t deal with physical and athletic Brentford. Utd as whole need athletic players to improve the team. Mainoo and mount has to look at their game very closely.
Anyways low expectations from the game given the season, focus on europa

Poor. First half Brentford dominated us and deserved to be leading. Then 2nd half it looked like we have some control but then conceded 2 goals far too easily. Guess it was decent perfomance last 20 minutes or so getting 2 goals back but ultimately we lost and conceded 4 goals.

Don't think we're even getting to 44 points and thought that was achievable. Depressing.

People weren’t doing that though. They were bringing the whole season into the story. If it was just being annoyed at today that’s fine, but when you use today’s game, ignoring all context, as further fuel to start mouthing off about Amorim, the 3 at the back system, the season generally, and everything else, then it’s just dumb.

Another defeat but we all know the priority is the Europa League and I’d say we’re just one defensive injury away from a real defensive crisis with Dalot and De Ligt possibly out for the season.

Yoro, Maguire and Lindelof look to be the first choice defence from now on.
May as well not bother then. Nah, Mazraoui has to be first choice in there with Amad to RWB. We won't win anything with Victor Lindelof a starter

If your embarrassed after that then I'd argue you have a very low embarrassment threshold.

Haters just can't help themselves
Bunch of 'fans' hate-watching and waiting for us to lose just to come prancing around with their '5 defenders! System sucks! Amorim out!' ignorant nonsense.

4-3 with kids away to a very physical Brentford. Well done, lads! MDL injury showed that Amorim was right to rest everyone today - imagine if that happened to Bruno.

Amad looked sharp and great addition to winning in Europe. Big positive

I would hardly describe Brentford as a poor side and we played squad players.
Our definitions are clearly very different then. A team that’s attacking plays are from long throws and up and under crosses are not a good team.

We weren't terrible but I thought the younger players couldn't cope with the physicality today, Anthony Taylor had his usual s##t game when reffing us. At least we got a couple back. Need to get the job done on Thursday now, that's massively important.

Perfect prep for Thursday. Feet firmly on ground. Amass not ready yet, imo. Garna great. Good that Amad scored. Probably worth a draw but for fluke

I am still not convinced that Amorim's system can work in EPL. We will see after the summer and I hope he will prove me wrong but I am sceptical. Not a fan of the wingback system at all.

Very entertaining match. Brentford played some beautiful stuff, their fourth good was good on the eye.

All it shows is our 2nd string is not good enough. We knew that. Can't wait for this season to end (hopefully with a Europa League trophy somehow)

We would have won this game if Amorim put in the right players. Our 3 young players were totally manhandled by grown men. Mainoo was really poor out there, how is he a England international? I think Tuchel will probably from the England squad.

A team that is 9th in the league with less resources than most teams and can be difficult to beat at home is not a poor side.
Ok chief. Like I said, very different definitions. Your standards are low, and that’s fine.

Team selection was too young, think Amorim might learn from that.

Dorgu (20), Garnacho (20), Amass (18), Obi Martin (17), Fredricson (20) and even Yoro (18) coming off the bench.

It's very, very young and inexperienced, playing away from home against a horrible but effective side of veteran professionals.

So why are you trying to start a silly conversation about Mainoo?

The commentator on Danish television said it right: Man United make every opponent look like the Harlem Globetrotters of football.

They were much better in the first 45, but I'd argue there 3rd goal came totally against the run of play - we were on top at that point.

Not saying we deserved to win or anything, but I don't think they totally bossed it before 4-1.

At 4-1 I was happy the never ending VAR check was sparing us their 5th.

Maz will play in the wingback role as he did against Bilbao. Dorgu will take the other side.

People seem desperate for Amad to play in the wingback role but I’m sure the manager will pick the better defensive option. Guess we’ll see.

They've scored the 6th most goals in the league. More than Forest, Villa and Chelsea. Two fewer than Arsenal, five fewer than Man City. They are pretty decent going forward.

I noticed in this game how much intensity we lack.

It’s like, really really bad.

Scarily bad.

Honest question - realistically, next season what can Amourim do to raise the intensity of this team (in the prem) to the level that Brentford have shown in this game? I’m not saying he can’t, I’m trying to work out HOW?

Buy better athletes

We lost. Spurs didn’t and there still below us.

Our goals were very well taken.
Ugarte had a lot to do basically by himself.
Great experience for the starlets. They will be disappointed we lost but will be over the moon they got to play a whole match.
