Overall a good performance and result. City didn't have a shot on goal for the first time since 2012 ( according to the commentator ). Still lots to improve, there were too many unforced errors, Pogba should have scored. Pleased with Ibra's workrate although it's exactly what we signed him for.

Burnley at home next and time to start the fabled good run.

Delighted with the victory, much better second half.

Burnley up next, important now to get back to winning ways in the league and put a run together.

A very good second half, a mediocre first.

Second half we looked like we did first half against Liverpool, winning most duels all across the pitch. That is the defensive display Mourinho wants I think, stress and win the ball relatively high up the pitch. Especially when the opponent didn't have good control of the ball.

Several players seemed to "snap" into it in the second half as well, notably Shaw and Ibra was 3 notches better.

We can complain as much as we want about the sluggishness, but Ibra created 3 fat chances today. Not that many strikers with his presence in the middle.

Rojo/Blind even looked comfortable. Valencia was a beast, played much of the game with a quite painful hand it looked like - still won everything.

Pogba/Herrera/Carrick all functioned well enough, Schneiderlin did his job too last 20.

Mata once again provides an important goal or assist.

All in all, happy days. Lets hope we can keep it up.

Also I thought our passing were much better till our forward players mess things up. Playing the likes of blind, carrick, mata, ander gave us a bit of intelligence, movement, passing lane etc unlike the league game where we had all the brute and hoofing the ball all day long.

I want to know what Mourinho said.....whatever it was worked. Was it that they were playing for their futures....something about the fans, whatever it was....it worked. Hopefully he will tell us.

Very good second half.

1. Rojo wasn't shit!
2. Pogba showing flashes of brilliance, but is still frustrating. You can tell how good he'll be.
3. Herrera (especially), Mata and Carrick very good
4. Shaw had a rough time especially first half
5. A bit of nous and nastiness back - Ibra intimidating Otamendi and defending his team mate, clever play and hard tackling especially in midfield

Much better.

City reserve team.
Kompany, Otamendi, Clichy, Nolito, Sane, Iheanacho all played many games this season (except Kompany who played whenever fit). Then they brought on Kolarov at half time, Sterling at 60th min and Aguero at 70th min, all first team players.

That first half was as poor as you could imagine. Much different in the second and we deserved the win.

Beating City is a confidence booster that we mustn't let go to waste. We need to gather some momentum now. Show that same intent when we go forward and things will start to click.

United fan here but.

Game would have been different if De Bruyne & Silva were on the field, Ibrahimovic is looking awful and needs to get in the box more rather than drop deep. Pogba needs someone to run off him, and come narrow. Pogba I think give him 2 more months and he'll start to show his quality it's a De Gea situation all over again.

Herrera needs to start every game, so does Carrick.

Mate, we needed a win - things were getting desperate. Whether it came in the League Cup or any other competition, we needed this.
We did. pep did us a huge favour by playing pretty much city's c team tonight. hopefully we can back this up in what will be a tougher game at the weekend.

A huge relief considering our recent form. Second half was great stuff. Mata and Herrera link up so well together as I expected. Still much to work on, but feck, let's enjoy this one.

To be fair it was far from City's best team and we fielded our best fit XI (as Mou sees it, at least).
Still, feels nice to win against them, especially after the horrible result

City basically played their B team for 70 mins but still a morale boosting win for everyone at the club, especially after the weekend. Just wish this was the league and not the Mickey Mouse cup.

There is no way Pep wanted to lose this, not after 5 games without a win. He took a risk after our thrashing and gambled on our lack of cohesion and confidence. In the first half looked like it was working...but Jose said something and then the whole game changed, but then it was too late for Pep.....

A much needed win. Will do good for confidence but must-not-get-carried-away now!

What an important win that was! I couldn't honestly give a shite about the EFL cup or whatever its called, but it's hard to beat winning a Manchester derby, especially when Pep is struggling so much. We have a long way to go and we look inconsistent even within matches, but we're definitely headed in the right direction under Jose.

Positives:

  • The centre-back pairing: Looking at Blind and Rojo is enough to send a chill down anyone's spine, however they looked calm, assured, and both extremely capable of playing the ball out.
  • Rashford: Rashford has struggled out wide in recent weeks, but he looked much better today, especially in the second half.
  • Ibra (second half): He was shocking in the first half but much better in the second, his overall play looked hugely improved.
  • Herrera: Herrera seems to get better and better every match. Him and Mata need to be playing as much as possible.
  • Schneiderlin: He seemed to be the forgotten man, but that decent cameo may have put him right back in Mourinho's plans.
  • Mata (my man of the match): What a player Mata is, he has had so much stick for a long time now (from myself included) but he looks fantastic under Mourinho. If Jose keeps his faith in him he could be a huge player for us.
Negatives:
  • Shaw: Shaw looked a bit sluggish tonight, he hasn't looked great for a while now, but we have to be patience given the injury he had.
  • Pogba: It might be a bit harsh saying Pogba was a negative, as in the second half he did well. He doesn't looked very settled yet though, I'm sure in time he will gradually improve, especially if he defends more.
Overall: A good win against a big rival, should take some pressure off Jose, whilst giving everyone at the club a nice boost. Looking forward to heading over to the bluemoon thread now!

We clearly deserved to win that. Herrera increasingly becoming vital for us. One of the in form midfielders in the league.

Looks like he was really hurt with that 4-0. He probably blames himself for the loss and really really wanted to win this.

My view is City without Silva and De Bruyne is basically United under LVG. Probably not even that because their passing was often erratic. We should have won comfortably if we could be more confident in front of the goal. Valencia and Herrera were immense.

"Normally Zlatan would have buried that"! "Yeah on any other day big Ibra would have put that one away"! How many times are we going to hear these things!? And Pogba looks terrible. It's like he has no football brain at times. Positionally diabolical. And ridiculous decision making. At about 91 minutes in his own half with someone right on him he tried to beat them with an overhead kick! He had an easy safe pass straight ahead of him too which is all that was required. Thankfully City were weak and poor.

Good 2nd half performance. Let's play like that for the entire 90 from now on and see how it goes.

For all the "Pep didn't play his strong team", we also played Rojo as a CB who is nth choice and also Blind on the right side of the defense which I don't think he has ever played before. Our defense was great and good to see us creating so many chances on counter.
