Let's talk about the best kind of games, retro games :D I only remember one similar thread and that one's about six years old, so here's a new one.

I pretty sure I'm already addicted to scouring eBay and classifieds every day for games, so I'm sure that deciding to make this thread will turn out to be a brilliant idea.
 
How old are we talking here, do you have a cut off in mind? Any particular machine? Do you want reviews?

Anyway, a couple of greats straight out of left field for you:

Plunder! On the speccy
Realms of the Haunting on the PC.

I can do screenies and mini reviews for those two great (and well overlooked) games tomorrow if you like :)
 
I just bought sonic 1,2&3 for the xbox today, a load of other ancient games came with it as well.

Anyone ever play Battlezone on the PC? Brilliant game.

Anyone ever play toejam and earl, that was a cool game.
 
Was always (and still am) a huge graphic adventure fan - any of the Lucas Arts games and several others.

Monkey Island, Indiana, Grim Fandango, Full Throttle, Day of the Tentacle, Sam and Max, Zakk McCracken etc etc. I had them all and have finished on multiple occasions.

One of my favourite retro games was Flashback, which I cannot wait for the remake of. Another World wasn't bad either but nowhere near as good.

My all time favourite game is probably Street Fighter 2, which I played in the arcades probably about 25 years ago. I've put 100's of hours into that game.

Yeah it's a pretty good collection. I used it quite a bit when I didn't have my Mega Drive hooked up. The saving addition can be quite useful in some of the games, too.

Good choices. Spent hours on Day of the Tentacle, awesome game. Never got too far in Sam and Max, found it quite a bit trickier but still enjoyed it a lot. Full Throttle is great too, love the setting and atmosphere in it.

Still waiting to get find a good deal on a big box version of Monkey Island.
 
Not very retro, but I wish the Dreamcast was still around.
 
Dunno, mate. I had a Japanese one, at first; which was a bugger, trying to understand Sonic Adventure in that language. :D
 
The first game I remember playing was Alex Kidd in Miracle World. It came built into the Sega Master System II.

I was always a Nintendo guy, the Wii U is probably the first Nintendo console either home or handheld (not counting silly variations) I won't be buying.

Loved the SNES as a kid, Super Mario World is still one of my favourite games I've ever played.
Maybe it's just cos I was a child back then but games were so much harder back in the day, I remember getting my ass kicked so hard on Super Metroid, Castlevania 4 and even Earthworm Jim. These days it seems the only way you don't beat a game is cos you get bored of it, or get sick of the stupid motion controls.

What was so great about the Dreamcast that you wish it were still around? :lol:

Well, mainly some of the games rather than the console itself: Soul Calibur, Quake III Arena online, Res. Evil: Code Veronica...and offbeat ones like Omikron: The Nomad Soul. Granted, these games have either been surpassed or owe a lot to pc variations, but they were great nonetheless.

Not even going to mention Shenmue? tut tut

Never got to play the first because I didn't own a Dreamcast but the second was great.. apart from the end where I was wondering through some woods for half an hour bored before it just finished out of nowhere.. and then they never finished the trilogy.
 
You have to finish Sam'n'max Olly. It's the funniest of all the LucasArts point and clicks. It does take a bit of time though. My tagline is actually a quote of max
 
I played the Steam versions of the Monkey Island games some years. They are still great. I wish they would put up the third of them as well.
 
Prince of Persia, the first one, is the best old game. It's not even a contest.
 
My first games were on the speccy, all of the Dizzies were class but i liked Fantasy Island most. Bruce Lee was a great game. Treasure Island, Oh Mummy, Colin the Cleaner. I also had the first football manager game too and remember taking Northampton town on an endless run of league champoinships

On to the mega drive, Streets of Rage, Eternal Champions (would love to see a remake of this) The Immortal, Zero Tolerance. Loved Striker on the SNES too
 
Snake, Rattle and Roll, now that was a classic. Spent ages trying to get past that ice level, but never managed it.

Buggy Boy, Chase HQ, Settlers, Xenon 2, Better Dead Than Alien and Theme Park are all games I remember loving on the Amiga.
 
Although the first game I ever played was Batman on my uncle's Amiga 500, The first game I owned was Alex Kidd in Miracle World, which was built into my Master System II. To this day I wish they would port it to the App Store so I can play it whilst having a dump :(

I still remember the night before I got my SNES. Me and my bro stayed up all night talking about Street Fighter 2 Turbo (which was included in the bundle) and then as soon as it hit 8am, we dragged my dad out of his bed and he drove us to town to buy the console only for the woman at the store to tell us it was sold out. Me and my bro never felt so upset in our lives! After driving to EVERY game shop in and around my town, we finally went to Woolworths to get a Master System game and there it was, 1 SNES with Street Fighter 2 Turbo in stock! Best moment of my life :D
 
I'd give my left nut for Shenmue 3, hell I'd consider it for a HD remake of either 1 or 2.
 
I played plenty of games back then when I had more free time. I still like to play old games when I can. In fact, I am currently in the middle of a game of Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri. Probably one of the best turn based strategy games of all times.

As an aside you can buy old games on 'good old games'. Most only cost a few $, and are configured to work on modern operating systems.

The first game I ever played, was the original Pong.
 
Lotus: Turbo Challenge and the Settlers were the two I most liked to play as a very young child. Also Cannon Fodder, but easily my favourite thing was watching my Mum play Simon the Sorcerer and the Monkey Islands. Also the Legend of Kyrandia and Another World.

I am so glad you listed that! One tough game about a ninja that is a badass yet dies in one hit (on the Amiga version at least) :lol: I loved that game so much that my PSN name is TheShadowDancer6 but not a lot of people get the reference :(

Not forgetting Jet set radio, crazy taxi and the brilliant MSR, with the fantastic Kudos system.
The dreamcast was brilliant, but unfortunately developers ignored it and the fan boys got all excited over the ps2, which had the worst launch line up ever.

Sega is in serious decline as a company, doubt they'll ever do anything great with any of their properties again.

Seems like Capcom and Konami are in the same position. Poor poor management.
