Fair play to them, didn't think they'd pull this off. You just know this is going to trigger the start of the next boom-bust cycle though.

When they sell Sterling, they can say they bought Firmino for -20m. Great stuff.

Why are people acting like he chose Liverpool over us?

Use your heads. If we wanted him we would have him. Some people on Recafe make me feel like a genius by comparison.

Genuine question as I haven't paid attention, but are people really thinking he picked Liverpool over United?

Media are linking our targets with City and all of Liverpool's targets with us. Usual BS
It's the way it goes, Southampton with Liverpool, Liverpool with United, United with City, City with Madrid & Barca. One up the ladder each time, classic journalists.

On a more serious note, he's a good purchase for Liverpool. I suspect we will see the Sterling deal completed in the short-term now this has been announced. Can't quite see how they'll line up next year just yet. I guess we'll see what kind of value the £30m represents when De Bruyne moves on later in the summer.

No, the muppets are just annoyed that Liverpool made another signing whilst we don't have a clue what's up with our dealings

It's not impossible considering we have Mata, Rooney, Fellaini, Herrera and Di Maria who could play in the attacking midfielder role, whilst Sterling is likely to leave Liverpool. Playing wise he would get more game-time there, so there is an argument as to why he would chose them over us.
You also never know, he could be offered more money by Liverpool; even if we have more money, the fact that we have more does not mean that we would value him higher.

No value in this market as someone said once. €40m. Jesus.
Of course there is value. Just need to find a player early and hope that you are right more often than wrong. For example I cannot understand how Konoplyanka on a free transfer isn´t one of the hottest targets right now. Bayern Munich is looking to pay €60m for DiMaria or Griezmann, when he´s free. He´s exactly what they are looking for. 25 years old, proven internationally, winger, two-footed, preferably left side (Ribery) and instead will end up at Tottenham, Liverpool or Sevilla. You want value. There it is. You could sign him today (add €10m personal signing fee whatever) and sell him for €20m tomorrow. You still earned €10M in a day, conservatively estimated.

It´s like people assume a player must have a stink on him, if his contract expires. If Liverpool signed Konoplyanka for 13m, Milner for 13m and Firminho for 15m, everybody would be jealous what shrewd business they did. Instead it´s free, free and 41m.

I'm delighted about this signing, especially because it comes so out of the blue (for me at least), didn't think we had a chance to snap him up considering the 'hype' around him this summer. The price looks a bit steep but I'm just happy we found a quality replacement for Sterling, rather than spend it on five different players who all turn out to be dross. This paves the way for a Sterling to City transfer, they can have him if they bid anything over £40m, hopefully it gets to £50m, I doubt it but you never know with them fools.

A RB (Clyne most probably), striker (maybe Bacca although he's a little bit old for £21m), CM (Kovacic) and maybe another CB and we've had a really good summer. Only place we've already failed to do proper business is the goalkeeper, imo.

Sterling replacement. Plain and simple. I'd be a lot more afraid of facing Raheem than Roberto. Decent signing but doesn't make them any stronger considering the inevitable departure.

Milner replaces Gerrard. Gives them more legs but doesn't add inspiration. For their sake I hope they move Can into midfield and buy some proper defenders.

They still desperately need a striker. Sturridge is a perma-crock, Ings is mid table quality, balotelli is balotelli, and Lambert is hopeless.

Very good business for them, especially for the initial fee. 22m is nothing really. Only watched him recently, since we were linked, but that's the sort of signing their fans can get excited about. Milner, Firminho and Ings is good business if you ask me.

Glad we didn't get him. Seemed too much of a punt for someone who would probably have ended up pretty average with us.

Based on what? You can't possibly know that right now. I figure United were interested, but paying that kind of money is stupid given he wouldn't even be a guaranteed starter.

I was thinking that - a bit like the old Xmas tree formation that seems to have fallen out of favour
--------------------------Sturridge-------------------------
----------------Couthino------------Firminho--------------
-----------Henderson------Can------------Millner---------
Moreno-----------Sakho---------Skirtle------------Clyne
--------------------------Mignolet--------------------------

That assumes stirling goes and I think the ones in bold could well be replaced by the end of the transfer window as well

good strength in the squad and some players with a lot of potential, Ings, Sinclair, Origi, Markovich, Ibe, and if he ever gets better flanagan but as it stands I think they will need couthino to carry on his form, sturridge to remain injury free most of the season and Firminho to have a massive impact to even mount a realistic challenge for a CL spot
Injuries and our squad strength was our main problem last year. Our 'best' players always seemed to be injured (Sturridge, Lallana, Lucas) and the bench was bare when it came for long term replacements. This was all due to the shite summer spending, and getting in youngsters who needed a season under their belts (Markovic, Moreno, etc).

Its amazing the difference already, to never see Aspas, Lambert, Alberto, Moses, Balotelli, Borini take the field for us will be heaven. I used to be a Joe Allen fan but he's another I can be pretty happy never seeing again. Defence is still light but I'm expecting to concede 40+ goals again next season, its the other end of the pitch (scoring/creating) we needed mass improvement.

Obvious signing for them, they desperately needed a quality striker. Steep price and if he was really that good you'd think a CL team would have picked him up. From what I've seen he's very inconsistent.

There have been a lot saying that today, "glad we didn't sign him" etc most probably mean it but I reckon some are just saying it because we signed him and United didn't.
Personally I think we need him more than they do.

'Based on what?' is why he would've been a punt. But me thinking he'd end up average at United is because he wouldn't have been a guaranteed starter like you say, so he'd probably end up being another mediocre filler type player.
We need obvious starters to improve our team at the moment (obvs that doesn't always work out either but you know what I mean).
Obviously he could've been amazing and could be with you, but I couldn't really see it at United and personally I don't want more of that kind of player. We can take punts once the the team has been sorted out a bit more.

Something like:

--------------------------Sturridge--------------------------
---------------Couthino------------Firminho----------------
-------------Henderson--------------Millner----------------
------------------------Illarramendi-------------------------
Moreno-----------Sakho---------Skirtle------------Clyne--
--------------------------Mignolet---------------------------

Wouldn't be the worst of teams, lot of guile and craft in that front six.

An imaginary Liverpool starting XI, I feel disgusting.

That team looks like it'll have the same issues Arsenal have had recently. All of the attacking players in the team you posted like playing throgh the middle. A front 3 of Sturridge, Coutinho, and Firmino looks extremely narrow. Moreno and Clyne would then have to provide width and they'll get caught upfield and Liverpool will be blitzed on the counter.

Will be a decent signing for Liverpool. If he was a few years younger I would be more worried.

He looks to have quick feet and can play some nice through balls. overall though Ings, Coutinho and Firmino doesn't have much physhical presence.

Would have been a back up here to Rooney so hopefully we have bigger fish to fry.

True, but it's not much different from the way LvG sets us up. We play with Mata and Fellaini out wide (Fellaini sort of roams there though, doesn't start out there), neither are wingers. Fullbacks in the modern game have to get forward, they're all false wingers -- it's up to midfielders+CBs to read the game right and get their positioning spot on.

I'd never really heard of him before we started getting linked with him so I don't know how good he is.

It's big money though, and Liverpool have had a shocking record with big transfers recently. Even worse than we have.

I hope he's not as heavy shit as Coutinho. And it is certain we didn't want him that much, we are after different players I'd say
