I was excited when united were linked to him earlier in the window.

Since the Copa America games he's played that excitement has gone off the boil, but I know that his role is not the central striker. He will definitely improve their squad and first XI, large chunk of the Sterling money has gone on him.

If they also get Illarramendi, you'd have to say it would be a great window for them.

Very good signing for Liverpool, will provide some efficiency they've been missing lately and will definitely improve their first team. I was hoping United would sign him but it appears that Liverpool have stepped in without much fuss and got the deal done early. Some shrewd movement by Liverpool so far in this transfer window.

£30m seems a bit high though.

I am not going to say I know a great deal about him, as I don't but we are getting our business done early this year.

He will hopefully add some quality to our squad.

Overall I am happy as I actually think the other signings so far whilst not costing much, are good additions too.
It would be ironic if this turned out to be a better transfer window than last season when we had Champions League football to offer.

Milner and Firmino are clever and good signings. They will probably lose Sterling, but they seem to buy decent players this year.

With Kovacic, Clyne and a decent CB, they would have a good squad again.

Was initially pleased to be linked with him as he seems a good player, but realistically we didn't actually need him considering our squad and formation. Paying 30m for a player that isn't really required would be daft.

Good signing for pool though, will make up a bit for losing sterling certainly.

Like I said in the other thread, Liverpool off to a very good start in the summer. Solid buys to begin with and this guy who is very highly rated and at the right age to make a step up.

I'm interested to seeing who does better between him and Depay this year after all the hype one of them has gotten.

Lewandowski is a striker, the other 2 are injury specialists, it's no surprise really.
Strikers do tend to get involved in a lot of end product. That's pretty much their job.

It's a great statistic in his favor.

Honestly don't know all that much about Firmino as I don't watch much German Football, just the highlights on ITV2. The most I have seen of him has been in the Copa America. To my eyes he's not looked a world beater, still you would not think most England players were very good based on tournaments...

I can't think United were ever in for him after we signed Memphis. We've trying to get rid of wingers at the moment e.g. Nani, couldn't see the logic in buying another one unless we were definitely gonna sell Di Maria and Van Gaal has no faith in Mata, Adnan or Young. If Hoffenheim were trying to squeeze more money out of Liverpool it makes sense they linked us to him. Liverpool themselves have done the same thing with Sterling, so that City will overreact and pay £50m.

Good signing by Liverpool. We have Mata and Januzaj. Rooney who also can play 10. di Maria can as well. Also, Andreas Pereira. Rather have us spend money should elsewhere.

I would have been so angry if we had gone out and spent 30mn on another number 10 , I think we need to get our priorities spot on this summer.

Surely this now signals the departure of Sterling? With Sterling seemingly going it isn't a signing to strengthen the side, it'll be interesting to see how he settles.
If you read the tweet it says NO MIDFIELDER
Which is a bit of an odd comparison as he's been playing up top for them hasnt he?

Good player but I do wonder how him coutinho lallana and millner fit together - I'm sure Rodgers has a plan but I have no clue as to how he sees it working (especially if Can is going to play in midfield which seems his natural role)

I suspect it wont work and he will try a myriad of weird and wonderful "genius" formations.

Very true, especially as it seems natural for Can to step into midfield now and we are still being linked with other strikers.
Add to this the likes of Ibe, Ings and Origi also, plus the other players we assume need to be sold. Especially Balotelli, Borini and Lambert.

Getting business done early is good but same happened at start of 11/12 season. That said he looks a good buy

Yeah, he plays more of a 2nd striker role like Rooney does for us, so no surprise he's in and around the goals.

Midfield three of Can, Milner and Henderson with Coutinho and Firmino drifting around Sturridge/Ings?

How is that possible? Robben, Ribery, Lewadowski? No?!
He played in the ultimate gung-ho team. Pretty sure that played a huge part as well. Hoffenheim's goal difference over the last 2 seasons is 121:125 (in 68 games). The majority of his goals and assists came in the totally extreme 13/14 season when Hoffenheim finished with 70 goals scored and 72 conceded in 34 games (he had 27 goals and assists in 33 games). Last season when Hoffenheim played a bit less extreme (still crazy attacking overall of course), he had 17 goals and assists in 33 games.

He also played a lot more minutes than e.g. Robben. Firmino played more than 2900 minutes in both the last two seasons, Robben only about 1700 in both seasons, so Robben's 41 goals and assists in about 3400 minutes are a lot more impressive than Firmino's 44 in about 5800 minutes. Müller, who seems to count as a forward and therefore was excluded, had 46 goals and assists in about 4600 minutes. De Bruyne is already on 39 in 1,5 seasons (4500 minutes). Reus had despite all his injuries 41 goals and assists in only 3800 minutes.

Good signing for them, but i think that means Sterling is gone.

Im not sure what we would have done with him had we got him. We have better 10s already and he doesnt fit LVGs system.

Can't say it doesn't hurt he's gone to Pool but the fact he primarily plays in a position we've got a lot of players in softens the blow.

I was thinking that - a bit like the old Xmas tree formation that seems to have fallen out of favour
--------------------------Sturridge-------------------------
----------------Couthino------------Firminho--------------
-----------Henderson------Can------------Millner---------
Moreno-----------Lovren---------Skirtle------------Manqillo?
--------------------------Mignolet--------------------------

That assumes stirling goes and I think the ones in bold could well be replaced by the end of the transfer window as well

good strength in the squad and some players with a lot of potential, Ings, Sinclair, Origi, Markovich, Ibe, and if he ever gets better flanagan but as it stands I think they will need couthino to carry on his form, sturridge to remain injury free most of the season and Firminho to have a massive impact to even mount a realistic challenge for a CL spot
