right now the best tennis player by a mile! his 13th final win in a row, the record was 12 final wins in a row. he breaks one record after the other, plays right now the best tennis. i have to say i am not a tennis fan, but whenever he plays i have to watch, he plays excellent. and is still only 23 years old, could dominate tennis circus in the next 10 years! just excellent

last time i think lleyton got the win was in the Davis cup when he was down 2 sets and 5-3 Federer serving.

Federer is simply a fecking freak.

well, hewitt beat him, but that was a long time ago...
keano31, why do you hate him? although he won everything and is the best tennis player, he is still very modest, very graceful. i think he is very friendly and just a nice guy who enjoys playing tennis

He does seem to be a nice guy.

His only weakness his is anger getting the best of him. He has learnt how to calm himself down which has resulted in him being such a freak tennis player now.

So young also. Good on him. I didnt like Hewitt at first. When i first saw Hewitt and did the "come on" shouting i didnt like...now he has matured and grown and he is a good player so credit to him. The "come on" shouting im used to now.

magic..pure magic... probabaly the best sportsman out there ATM..atleast in the last year... some of the tennis hes played this last year has been absolutely brilliant... iv watched alot of sampras and agassi, but this guy if he can sustain it could match sampras's tally of grandslams...and maybe even surpass it..
Everything about him is right.. huge forhand, good backhand, wonderful passing shot, hits winners from the back of the court, can change the pace of the rallies, good volley etc .. the only thing he can work on is his serve... the only times iv seen him look in trouble is when his serve falls flat and the opponent begins to attack his second serve... But what i also like is the way he carries himself on the pitch.. the other day on match point he got a bad decision, everyone knew it was out...but he got on with it.. dont know how one can hate the guy

He's the new Borg. Smooth, consistent, and boring.

Has Hewitt ever beaten him ?
Hewitt actually had a 6 or 7-1 winning record against Federer before this year. However they've played 7 or 8 times this year, and Federer has smashed him each time (I think the last two matches are the only ones where Roger hasn't won a set 6-0).

Federer has been my favourite non-Aussie tennis player since I first saw him years ago when he was just Martina Hingis' partner at the Hopman Cup. The pure natural talent and athleticism was there for all to see, and over the last 2 years he's shown that he could blow Sampras' record of Open titles out of the water. Simply the best all-round tennis player I've ever seen, he doesn't have a weakness.

I wouldn't go that far. Connors was an entertainer, so was McEnroe, as was Nastase. All top players hit nice winners. He's more in the Borg mold.

he is more quiet off field, and during the game he doesnt act in a special way, or is funny or makes jokes during a game, but his game, when he plays, it is very nice and exciting to watch, incredible sometimes!

i meant out of the current lot

GOAT.

He had a dip in form, people thought he was finally done and that time had caught up.

Then he goes to win Wimbledon, once again, without losing a single set. Unbelievable. I don't think we'll see a better or more successful tennis player, ever.

13 year old thread

Look at all the familiar posters who were posting back in this thread and are still here. Shows what a quality forum this is :)

I think it's nice that these sort of threads are bumped occasionally. What's the point in keeping them if they're not pulled up every now and again?

It's like a little snap shot into the minds of posters 13 years ago. It's really interesting that you get to hear people talk about someone or something "in the moment" but within the same context as if it was being talked about today.

Well, I agree, too. But whatever the rules say. :P
@Damien if you could close this thread, thank you.

Turns out he was a bit better than Borg:)

Although Bjorn would've been much better if he could've been arsed to play in the Aussie.

I was in love with the great man even then :)

I also thought his weakness was his serve

Wow I wasn't even aware I created this thread 13 years ago! I feel old :)

Good thing is, I was absolutely right. He did better than anyone could have ever expected. Truly incredible

Great bump.

We live lucky times to be able to watch him in his prime...which is, well, his entire career. :D

He's definitely not boring. God created Murray for that.

Why am I not surprised

The moron who wrote this evidently forgot the AO semi against Wawrinka, when both were barely moving halfway through 4th set, or the match against Berdych at Miami when the latter out hit and out ran Fed, had match point and then lost the match.

At Wimbledon this year going into the final, Fed clocked under 9 hours of play while Cilic was 14 hours. Yeah, there's no other way but PED to explain a man having 2 months break being fresher than his opponent who had near double the court time.

And why does these allegations not surfaced in 2015 when he made it to 2 Slam finals, did he dope then? Oh yeah, he didn;t need to because he was a sprightly young man of 34 years after all.

Yeah, especially since Federer is the player who always wants more testing and stiffer doping control. The guy is full of shit. I remember wanking over Djokovic 2 years ago.

2012:

Some very interesting statements from Roger Federer today on doping (reported by Piers Newbery of BBC Sport):

"I feel I'm being less tested now than six, seven, eight years ago...I don't know the reasons we are being tested less and I agree with Andy, we don't do a lot of blood testing during the year. I'm OK having more of that...I just think it's important to have enough tests out there...I don't like it when I'm only getting tested whatever number it is, which I don't think is enough or sufficient during the year...I think we should up it a little bit, or a lot - whatever you want to call it - because I think it's key and vital that the sport stays clean. It's got to. We have a good history in terms of that and we want to make sure that it stays that way."

2015 Nov after Russian scandal
Rafael Nadal called for every test to be made public, while Novak Djokovic was more relaxed about the current regime that tries to stop the cheats with its limited funding.

Federer said: ‘I think you can always do more. It’s very plain what we should be doing — just more testing across the board. If ever you make the quarters of any tournament then you should know you will be tested. It’s got to be very clear and simple.

‘I don’t understand that sometimes you have a run and you win a couple of events and the next thing you know, you haven’t been tested.

'It just can’t be that way, in my opinion. I’m always surprised when I win a tournament, I walk off the court and it’s like, where’s the doping guy?

‘Players need to feel they are going to be tested often, shying them away from any stupid thought they might be having.’

Federer also demanded more out-of-competition testing, revealing that he had so far undergone five of these in 2015.

After Troicki tested positive

Federer remains confident in the process, but reiterated the concern he raised at last year's ATP World Tour Finals about the volume of testing in tennis.

"Overall I trust the system," said the Swiss, 32. "They're all very professional. I just think it's very important they treat us like normal human beings, not criminals."

He added: "There needs to be more testing done. I know the budgets can be small sometimes. I just feel like I used to get tested more.

"Last year, when I was on the run - Dubai, Rotterdam, Indian Wells, when I won the three - and the year before that, I didn't get tested in one of those three events that I won.

"For me, that's not OK. You just show up and test a guy that's winning everything. That's sometimes what I struggle with."

yet he's doping after a successful season?

Federer was damn close in 2014 and 2015 to lift 2 slam titles, only losing to Djokovic and Cilic it's not like he came out of the blue. 2013 and 2016 was awful years for him, but he was struggling with injuries and missed a half an year off tour due to operation.

It appears the lessons learned from the Lance Armstrong years - and how easily the 'I'm tested so I'm obviously not a cheat' defence is obliterated - have been forgotten in tennis circles.

Does anybody else think its amazing that 13 years later the same thread is still running about a tennis player on a football forum. Amazing athlete and one of sports GoaT's.
