Would happily have him, I'm still not really sure on his position though, but I think he will play wherever you tell him and do a good job.

I can’t lie, I was thinking a week ago that this is the exact sort of deal you read on the continent that the player has been loaned. The likes of Juventus, Bayern, Inter seem to get loan deals of this calibre done, and if funds are tight for us, I can’t see why we couldn’t get Saúl on loan with an option.

He’s a fabulous player and would be a massive upgrade on anyone in our double pivot as he has grit but can also play.

Hmm. At his best he is a left footed box to box CM, the sort of Jack of all trades midfielder — not quite the profile that we need for balance.

But… A player with his experience on loan though, can’t really say no to that, can you?

Edit: I was wondering why Chelsea were linked but their midfield is kind of light. Kante, Jorginho, Kovacic are good quality, but then there’s nobody after that, I guess?

Are Chelsea in for every single player? Their squad is already massive.

Yeah it would be a good option for us, especially as it looks like we've spent what we can this summer.

They must be desperate to shift him before the window closes, the stories have picked up pace with the transfer window closing. Don't see it to be honest, is he even a specialist defensive midfield player? I would have thought he was closer to a Herrera than a Rice.

A loan deal seems like an excellent move for us. Gets a potentially quality player in with the option to make it permanent if it goes positively or he doesn’t adjust well and we can move on painlessly next summer to a different player.

Given our apparent lack of funds to address the midfield this might be our best bet.

I will wait for a more solid source before getting excited about this, could just be info being fed from the agent to stir interest.

Can he play in the Pivot with Pogba? (Nobody can apparently, nobody.)

I’ve obviously heard of him, but I can’t say I’ve paid much attention to him playing before. How good is he?

We rarely do loans do we, can only think of Larsson, Tevez and Falcao in the last 15 years or so?

Would be in favour of this, we need someone like him.

I think he’s a bit of an odd link for both Chelsea and United as he isn’t a DM but rather more of a box to box player which both clubs have plenty of.

My thinking is more that he plays in the pivot with one of Fred or Scott (or Matic), with Pogba staying where he is.

It would be the end of Donny once and for all though.

If we plan on continuing with Pogba on the left and Bruno in the #10 position then I'm all for this signing. McTominay and Fred alternating with eachother with Saul as the 2nd man in the pivot... Sounds fine to me. He's not very exciting but he consistently does the basics well.

Well this is it. If our first choice is Fred/McT with Pogba/Bruno we need another MF for rotation because Matic is not up to it, especially if Saul is available on a loan.

We should be all over this, really. We saw against Southampton what we look like with bare bones in midfield, and that was due to one player not being fit to start.

Pogba needs the free role and van de Beek isn't the answer either so we need another body in there. Saul at his best is a good player, and if we can get him in on loan that's a no brainer at this point in the window.

Alot of talks of Saul -fred pivot but what about a Saul -VDB pivot similar to Saul-Partey Pivot at Atheli 2 seasons ago.
Partey was the dictator while Saul covered and did more of the Defending.
Am saying this because i feel that one of the reasons VDB has rarely played is that the coaching staff don't trust any of Fred or Mctominay to be able to cover him defensively.
Am a HUGE HUGE fan of Saul and have always wanted him here but i thought that would stay a dream as he is very loyal to Athelico. Last season could just be the perfect storm to make my dreams come true.

Why on earth do Chelsea need another midfielder? It's their strongest position!

Chelsea's plan seems to be

Step 1 "Buy all the players"
Step 2 "Buy even more players"

Surely if this deal happens then that spells the end for Donny? He can't get minutes at the best of times.

For the deeper role they have Kante, Jorginho and Kovacic so I think Tuchel wants another.

Mount and Havertz played there a bit under Lampard but neither looked great there, so I can see why they want one more.

Chelsea bulk buying midfielders.
It is bonkers. Apparently they think that they are week in midfield. Having said that they do still have Barkley and Drinkwater on their books as they may have a point!

Last time I've watched him was when he scored that amazing solo goal v Bayern. I always thought he's top class, why exactly do Atletico want rid so bad?

Chelsea is a bit strange, Jorginho is nailed on as a starter while Kovacic is mostly their cover for Kante. Would be 3rd option or at best fight with Kovacic for some minutes. It doesn't make much sense, especially from his perspective.

Saul would be an upgrade on Fred. It wouldn’t change the dynamic of the midfield though. He’s not defensive midfielder or a deep lying playmaker. He’s just a slightly better Fred.

We need a midfielder who isn’t a holding player and has been out of form for quite a while. Interesting……

To be fair they only (ha!) have Kante, Jorginho and Kovacic for their two deeper midfield spots... after that its either moving Christensen up or Mount back (or maybe RLC?)

Still that first three is well ahead of Fred, McT and Matic

Yeah I was thinking along the same lines, they don't really need him as far as I can see.

Wherever he goes you would think playing time is high on the agenda for him, to either get a permanent move or put himself in the shop window for a move elsewhere. He would definitely get more game time here, we need midfield quality far more than Chelsea right now, it's the one real weak area of the team.
