Why do you think that?
Because Herrera provides the energy and Pogba the flair/creativity. And Niguez seems to be a Herrera-lite (from comments on here).

What happens if you have Fellaini (the other seeming back-up) and Niguez together? Would that midfield be guileful enough? Perhaps we need another type of player.

Fair enough. Would you be happy with Herrera and Niguez? Would you sell Fellaini and have a youngster to back up the three of Pogba, Herrera and Niguez?

So Niguez is a back-up to Herrera AND Pogba? So Herrera and Niguez could play together in front of Carrick? I'm not sure that midfield provides all the qualities we need.

Why is the price so high? Buy-out is £54m so shouldn't be able to get him for less than than? I suggest £35-40m would persuade them to sell.
Buy-out is 80m euros, and Atletico are not interested to sell him. So, I don't think that we can get him for 35-40m pounds.

I would be happy yes, they are all quality players except Fellaini. Herrera also seems to be being coached by Mou to take up Carricks role in his absensce

Saul does everything Herrera can but he is better at defending and faster. Herrera is more likely to be a Saul-lite than the other way around.

PS: He is also a slightly better dribbler.

Niguez is an excellent player and he can actually play in almost every position- CB, DM, AM and even on the wing, though he isn't that quick. He is very technical, he scored a few excellent goals, not only the Bayern goal, but also scored an amazing goal in the 4-0 v. Real. He is excellent with the head as well. So no wonder all the top clubs are eyeing him.

Having said all that, he is actually playing at a top club that he supports and was quoted as saying he does not want to ever leave. In addition, Atleti are at long last financially stable, so can see no reason for him to leave.

I doubt they would sell for less than his buy out... I mean why would they Oscar is going for £60m and David Luiz costs £50m if anything I suspect they would like to extend his contract with a bigger buy out clause

Personally I think he'd be good as Dm, coming through he was always touted as a DM, plus he has played CB, LB, RB,CM and CDM. He also has a few of the same charchteristics as Carrick but as a starting point all round I think he is probably more versatile. If people seem to think Kroos is an option then surely Saul is much better bearing in mind he actually has defensive abilities. It is a risk as a 3 of Pogba, Saul and Herrera undoubtedly I think would give us greater control but it's the defensive side which is the worry.

I do fully expect Jose to revert to 4231 to fit in the shiny new Griezmann toy I think we will buy.

Football Leaks put Saul's R/C at 45m euros.

That's fairly low. Has he not renewed his contract recently? Not that he seems to want to leave, though.

Don't think Football Leaks is as reliable as people think. I vaguely recall some fake contracts/documents were published on there and they thought they were genuine. I imagine it's already being used as a tool for agents/clubs/players.

Young and won't take Herrera out of his starting position but has the potential to do so, which is what we need, competition not replacement.

I had to read this twice because I'm an idiot. I was honestly wondering when Ashley Young has ever place centre midfield

Saul is probably the midfield prospect in world football I'd sign before anyone else.

He is not a DM, is he? Since breaking into the Atletico side, he has played as a box to box midfielder. When he was younger, he was touted as a DM, but i dont remember him playing that role at all for Atletico as a starter. He would play instead of Herrera, unless Herrera moves to the DM position.

Every midfielder that plays for Atleti is a DM.

He's much better than Xhaka who went for more money.
That’s hardly a glowing endorsement, considering that Xhaka is completely useless. Saul is a fighter, who can do everything a bit. He is not great on the ball, but he is also not a DM specialist. Our options in midfield are limited, so I don’t mind buying him. He’ll be useful. That said, I prefer to buy players, where we know exactly in which position/role they are going to play.

I read few weeks ago that he plays with internal catheter, cause he has problems with kidneys, ever since CL game against Bayer L, 2 years ago. Poor kid.

Is he better than Herrera? I don't enjoy watching Atletico and have been avoiding it to be honest, so I haven't seen a whole lot of him.

Some background information on his last few years and his health problems possibly being the making of him.

Atleti´s Saul reveals gruesome after effects of kidney injury

Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez has outlined the lengths to which he struggled for two years with a kidney problem – saying he "p***ed blood" in every game and training session.

The 22-year-old midfielder is set to line up when Atletico bid to reach a third Champions League semi-final in four seasons on Tuesday, when they defend a 1-0 lead at Leicester City.

Saul memorably scored a remarkable solo goal against Bayern Munich in the semi-finals of last season's competition and has established himself as an integral member of Diego Simeone's side, with his coach last month claiming he has the ability to be counted among the best midfielders in the world.

However, his progress has come amid severe health struggles, which began after he took an accidental kick to the stomach from Bayer Leverkusen defender Kyriakos Papadopoulos during a 2015 Champions League match.

He was hospitalised with kidney trauma and internal bleeding and was ruled out of action for almost six weeks, but revealed in an interview with Antena 3 that he subsequently played with a catheter to empty his bladder.

"For two years I was playing with a catheter inside," said Saul, who scored in Atleti's last-16 victory over Leverkusen this time around.

"In every training session and every game I p***ed blood. It was pretty bad, something difficult that people do not know or understand.

"I was risking my health to put on the club colours, to chase the dream.

"I remember everything about the injury - how I felt, how many times I vomited, being on the stretcher.

"Scoring the goal back there was a huge liberation and emotion for me. I felt like a weight had been lifted off me."

Is this still the case? That can't be the safest thing ever, surely? Takes Mourinho's 'warrior' rhetoric to a whole new ball-game.

I've discovered the issue only from this single article, but I guess that the past tense with which he's describing his struggles mean that those problems are probably over.

I think he signed a new contract last season which raised the release clause
Yeah I'm pretty sure it's 63million pounds is his buyout. Also he is part owned by Mendes's company or something as he was trying to force a sale last year but it never materialised.Thats just what I've read elsewhere as always liked him. Moyes was watching him when he was at Rayo. Thought something might materialise as a few clubs were sniffing as apparently people were surprised he was allowed to go out on loan.
