You know the signings have been shit and the season awful when we're lamenting the loss of Fred

Same. He’s definitely the midfielder who put in the highest number of impressive big game performances since Fergie left. Although that’s balanced out by a similarly impressive number of incredibly bad performances. That’s just the way he rolls.
Herrera was a better player in big games and much more consistent, but yeah, Fred is underappreciated by some on here.

It's weird that we sold Herrera to buy Fred on bigger wages, and it turned out that Ander was the better player.

Why not just give Ander what he was asking for? Fecking ridiculous.

Absolutely, you at least know what you’re getting from him, energy and misplaced passess

Hindsight fc, he was so fcking average. One amazing game, followed by 3 awful ones. You know standards dropped when people are reminiscing of him.

Whatever the question is in our midfield - Fred is not the answer. Never was. He just looked busy, never really contributed much.

Yeah, and we sold him for peanuts in peak of his form as he was really good last season. But the manager didn't fancy him for whatever reason.
He wasn't worth much with a year left on his contract

Casemiro comparison was obvious hyperbole. Or at least I thought so. But he still had noticeably poor acceleration off the mark, and would be frequently beaten to a ball that he was closer to, which was a common matchday thread complaint.

He worked hard, but he was slow whilst doing so. I'd still rather we had him over McT, but it's a low bar.
There's your mistake, taking anything seriously in the matchday threads

Genuinely forgot about Fred entirely until I saw this thread

Wasn't a mistake. Calm tf down
Always the case on the Caf when we sell a shit player only to replace him with an even worse player. The solution is better recruitment, not a willingness to hang onto dross.

Our players are not that bad individually, if they were we'd be bottom half. Their individual quality has been saving us this season as that's all we have. We have no structure. The problem is the tactics and squad building. Our squad on paper is confusing, especially our midfield. There is no balance or direction.

Rose-tinted glasses at their finest. Fred used to get dog walked in midfield every week for us.
Of course he did, he was playing with McT as a partner, this season he would have been a useful player to have around, far more useful than Amrabat, in hindsight it would have been better to have kept him and let his contract expire at the end of the season

Our best performances under Ten Hag came with Fred in the team, thought it was strange he got rid.

He wasn't good enough ultimately but we made a mistake by not upgrading our midfield options - somehow Amrabat is even less good enough.

If we hadnt sold him we'd have been playing the same Fred - McTominay midfield that kept us from competing with our rivals for a third of a decade. Thats better than this season but not good enough. We overspent on Mount, Hojlund and Onana and none of them have repaid it and Amrabat isnt good enough to start for us

The replacements are always worse. Feel like that since the LVG era
Although the ETH era is basically a copy of LVG so far but with some added smashings and humiliations to go with it.

Fred funnily enough is the type of player ETH needed given the way he has the midfield basically rush forward, at least Fred would have the energy to try and get back to help the defence.

That doesn’t make any sense regarding his contract and playing with mctominay or anyone else makes no difference. He wouldn’t make the way we play better in any way. Blame shifting to McTominay doesn’t change that.

United sold Fred for less than the cost of the loan for Amrabat, Fred would have made us less porous in midfield this season, he doesn't jog around like some, he isn't the answer but his energy would have been useful this season, the less said about McT as a CM the better

We are paying 2M more to loan Amrabat, who comfortably looks a level or two below Fred than we made out of selling Fred. If that ain’t an indictment of the ass clowns running our transfer business, I don’t know what else could be.
Damn

Selling Fred was not a mistake. Selling Fred and filling the space in our squad with Mount and Amrabat was the mistake. Imagine spending the £60m+ we have wasted on another unneeded #10 and immobile centre midfielder on a dynamic box to box player instead? Typical of our recruitment to sell in a position and downgrade with the replacement. Same story since Fergie retired.

Just said this, spot on. Did anyone think our recruitment was good last summer? It was a shambles as usual.
