Silva to City

Silva was decent today. He'll need to adapt to not having as much time on the ball as he's used to, which was evident today when a player just got in from behind and snatched the ball from him on a couple of occasions. Looked handy with the ball, apart from that one dribble at the side of the penalty box which he fecked up and pushed straight over the line for a goal kick.

It was an annoyingly good start by Silva in a fairly rubbish performance by City. I had hoped he might take a while to settle in.

I think Silva will be one of their big name flops. They need to decide on a position for him.

The problem wasn't Silva though. He looked quality on the ball. The problem was City's midfield were incapable of keeping the ball and getting it forwards to Tevez and Silva. Silva barely saw the ball because of this.

I don't agree at all, I thought in general they did quite well. They both had 55 successful passes or more and Toure did play the ball forward quite a lot - see here - and I thought Silva did quite well himself(43 successful passes all round the pitch) but they just lacked width - or quality in wide areas - and the only threat they had was when Toure or Silva played intricate passes in very tight spaces. The 3 crosses Silva attempted from the left all failed, and that should tell you a lot about where he should be played.

Well that, and how poor City were in getting numbers in the box - which was a problem that Silva needs to take the blame for - because a lot of the time the only player in the box was SWP, not even Tevez frequently, so their midfield play was good but their play in the attacking third really wasn't.

if silva had been making his united debut today I would have seen enough to be happy. he is in a new league and adjusting to a totally different tempo. I think the lad is quality and a good signing for them. the horrible pricks

Anyone know how to put those chalkboard picture thingys on here? I swear I've seen other people do it before!

I think he took the corners and set pieces too. Which he didnt at Valencia. And I didnt see anything to convince me they made a mistake.

SWP may have been shite but at least he provided a threat, which is what you want from your attacking players. So few of City's managed that today.

I wonder how Mancini is going to fit Silva into his dream formation of a team full of holding midfielders and Tevez.

That was only for top 6 away. He'll play 4231 at home and against weaker opposition with Silva, Tevez and Balotelli behind Adebayor.

I actually think he might play Silva behind Tevez in the centre, with Johnson and Balotelli on the wings.

I reckon Ade the Arsehole is yesterday's man. He'll go as Pete said but with Johnson Silva and Balotelli/SWP behind Tevez.

Print screen and then upload it to photobucket or something?

Thats how I've done it

Ah, I'd have thought there was a simpler way by now! I'm a spaz and can't work out how to print screen while only printing the internet page - rather than the entire screen - but it gets the point across anyway so...

From that I'd argue he was very involved in the right kind of areas, and that's really what you're looking for on his debut in a new league. Thought he did quite well.

Rarely did he complete a forward pass. Created less than Johnson and Tevez, was less of a threat than those two plus SWP.

Just his first game but reminds me of most of his matches for Valencia.

Silva's talents are wasted in a football match where no one can keep possession for any length of time at all.

His style of football may not be that found in England.

everytime silva had the ball, he either passed it to noone, or got pushed off the ball.

Always felt he would've been a superb signing for Arsenal.

To replace Rosicky right away, and can possibly take over Cesc's mantle if he leaves next year.

Its not like Valencia dominate most of their matches.

I know, and City should dominate once they get into the swing of things and are playing lesser opposition.

I don't see much of Valencia, so I'll concede your point.

But I still think that at least Valencia attempt to play a certain style while the English sides like to simply get right to it. I'm not sure how comfortable Silva will become in England.

TBF they set up to be very defensive, to ensure they didn't get beat. It was pure 4-5-1 they were playing. They weren't intent on being much of a threat to Spurs except on the occasional counter attack.

Spot on.

at the Mestalla they do, right?

Some of the time of course. But not every match against teams other than say Madrid, Barcelona, Sevilla, even Atletico and Villarreal. So even discounting these teams, there were still several matches against teams you might feel they should dominate. Most of the time they had around about an even share.

Its probably because they tried to break forward quickly and play on the counter a lot, losing the ball while moving forward. Instead of being patient and retaining the ball ala Barcelona.

You're getting him mixed up with Modric.
I don't know which game you watched, but Modric played well yesterday. Just as they did against Arsenal, Chelsea, Man. City and others last season, the midfield pairing of Modric and Huddlestone showed the capacity to more than hold their own, even against 5-man midfield opposition.

If Man. City could have signed Modric in preference to any of their new signings this summer, then no doubt they would have been delighted to do so.
